Chapter 6
The sun was low in the sky by the time I was climbing the fire escape to my apartment. Once I was inside, I just sat on my black couch. I stared at the wall, coming up with a plan.
I want to go to England. I want to be free. I want to exist. I want to be seen. But I don't have the money for plane tickets. Maybe he would get me a plane ticket.
I got up from the couch and ventured to my bedroom. I went to the bedside table and picked up the phone that he gave to me. Maybe I should carry it around. Maybe I can start listening to music while I walk. That could be fun.
I brought the phone with me to the kitchen and began to make some tacos. Something quick and easy. I never like to make things that take a while. I tried to multitask and while I was waiting for the stove to heat up so I could cook my taco meat, I picked up the phone that I left on the kitchen counter. I began to write a text message that would go to him.
I need a favor. I typed. As I waited for a response I continued on with dinner.
I finished cooking the meat and chopped some lettuce, tomatoes, and bell peppers. I grabbed cheese out of the fridge and some soft tortillas. I assembled a taco and looked at it on my plate. It looked delicious. Right as I reached for my taco, the phone buzzed to life. I looked at it and noticed that he had replied to my message.
I'm listening... He had said.
How hard do you think it would be to get me a vacation. I cringed. I never thought I would be asking him for something. I take what he gives me. I never ask for anything.
I don't know. Depends on where you want to go.
I want to go to England. I want a break. I want to be visible again.
This has nothing to do with that girl. Does it?
No! I just want to go somewhere else.
Well, I'll look into it. When do you want to go?
As soon as possible.
Okay.
The conversation ended there. I ate my dinner. I cleaned the dishes. I didn't really have anything else to do. I never have anything to do. I don't have a television. There used to be one, but I had him remove it. I did have a couch though. In front of where the television used to be.
I walked to the window I use to get in and out of my apartment. I looked outside, the sun had gone down and the lights of the city were beautiful. I'm a fan of nature, but there's a beauty of the concrete jungle that you don't see anywhere else. I climbed out of the window and onto the roof. Normally I only go up there to watch the sunrise, but I wanted to change things up.
The city was quiet, well as quiet as New York can be. There were cars and people and all that, but I ignored the sound. I only listened to my thoughts.
---------
I woke up the next morning to the sunrise. I had fallen asleep on the roof. The sunrise was as beautiful as always. The start of something new.
After the sunrise, I climbed down into my apartment. I had left the phone in the kitchen. Well, I guess it's my phone. I went to retrieve it and found an envelope next to it. I instantly knew that he put it there. Sometimes it bothers me that he has free range to my belongings.
I opened the envelope and inside I saw two hundred dollars and a round trip plane ticket to England. As well as a passport. The ticket told me that my flight left at 3:00 pm. And it was 8:00 now. I had roughly eight hours. That was more that enough time.
Maybe now I can have a chance of being seen again. Maybe.
