It had only been a few days since the incident. Nishinoya was sitting in a chair next to Daichi. They were at his place. He couldn't stand being in Asahi and Suga's apartment for one second longer, and his older friend was going into Miyagi again for a month-long internship. He checked his phone. There were thirty missed calls, all from Asahi. Too bad, he thought as he silenced all calls from the contact. After a few moments, he checked his messages. There were so many, all from his soulmate, but once again, he ignored them. He couldn't think about Azumane right now.
How did it get to this point? Just three days ago, they had been fine. Just three days ago, he'd been making sure he was okay. Just three days ago, everything was okay. But was it? What he remembered of that day was...difficult. Mostly, he'd blocked it out. But the bits he couldn't, the most painful ones...the yelling, the tears, the anger. Was this his punishment? Was this penalization for his defiance of fate? Hadn't he suffered enough? Why couldn't he just live a happy life with his soulmate?
He was supposed to die, and Asahi saved him. Then Asahi was supposed to die, and Nishinoya saved him. There was too much death in this world. Why, oh why, had Azumane's grandmother had to die? Why did he have to be in such despair, forcing Noya to push his emotions into the backseat? Why had those same emotions built up, as if in an effervescent drink?
And why did all that pressure have to be released in one fatal burst?
"I don't get it. Why are you upset at me?"
"I never said that! I just, ugh, with your grandmother dead, I can't talk about myself anymore..."
"So everything's about you now, huh?"
"That's not what I said!"
"Well, what are you saying?"
"I...I...I don't know!"
Yuu practically screamed it out, with his hand on his head in a position that resembled one of him trying to keep his head from splitting open. Tears streamed down his face, and however he willed them to stop, they didn't. Asahi was standing over him, shaking from his own watery woes, and they were both brought into an entrancing silence for a moment. Noya could tell his boyfriend wanted to say something, but couldn't. So he waited, as his anxiety built along with the suspense. He waited, until the words finally came out.
"I think...we should take a break."
And so Nishinoya had left that very same day, with a heavy heart. Daichi decided to go with him, since his internship was starting soon and he wanted to give moral support. It didn't help much, but he got props for trying to put a band-aid on this stupid mess. He was the only one who made an attempt, though, because Yuu was too much of a coward to try to do something himself. To make amends with his-
ex-boyfriend.
"But we're soulmates," he caught himself mumbling as he left.
"We're soulmates."
