Five
Over the next few days, Cas talked to Dean a lot. They talked about a lot. Cas wished Dean would stop pretending, though. No matter how many times Cas told Dean he knew that no one actually cared, Dean still asked him questions about himself. Cas eventually just started changing the subject whenever Dean did that.
One day after Aaron had left for work, Cas and Dean were talking again. They had just been talking about burgers when Dean had asked Cas if he wanted to have lunch. Cas had agreed almost immediately. He hadn't really ever had any friends, and the idea of just having lunch with someone and hanging out was one he had always liked.
When Cas got to the diner, he was more nervous than he should have been. It was just Dean, and it wasn't like this was a date or anything. Even if Cas didn't have a boyfriend, who else would ask him on a date? Aaron was the only one who had ever noticed him long enough for that.
"Hey Cas," Dean said, walking up to Cas.
"Hello," Cas replied. Dean walked over to the booth he had been sitting at when Cas got there and sat down. Cas followed suit.
"How are you, Cas?" Dean asked.
"I'm okay. My boyfriend Aaron thinks he's about to be promoted," Cas said.
"Right. The boyfriend," Dean said, shifting in his seat. Oh god, Cas thought, is he homophobic?
"Am I... hearing judgment?" Cas asked, afraid of the answer. Dean let out a laugh.
"No. More like disappointment," he said. Cas blushed.
"Disappointment? You mean you- you mean I- w-what?" He stammered. Dean smiled.
"I mean I would've asked you on a date. You're cute Cas," he said. Cas stared at Dean.
"I... am?" Cas asked. Even Aaron had never said that.
"Cas, when are you going to learn to take a compliment?" Dean asked, sounding amused. Cas turned even more red.
"May we please stop talking about this?" He mumbled.
"Okay, fine. Tell me about your family," Dean said. Cas stared at his hands.
"I don't have one," he said softly, not meeting Dean's eyes. "My parents passed away when I was young."
"Oh. I'm sorry, Cas," Dean said. Cas stood up.
"I... I'll be back," he said softly, turning and walking into the bathroom. He watched himself in the mirror, his mind wandering back over the years. He hated that he couldn't remember his birth parents. All he had ever known was his adoptive family, and that wasn't much comfort. Gabriel had never been that bad, but Michael and Luc never really cared about him, and Naomi... Cas blinked and stepped away from the mirror. Now wasn't the time to think about all of that. Cas turned and walked back out. He was almost sure that Dean would be gone by then, but there he was, standing next to the booth and looking concerned.
"Hey. Are you okay?" He asked. Cas nodded.
"I'll be fine, Dean," he said, sitting down.
"Okay. I didn't know what you wanted, I ordered you a burger," Dean said, also sitting.
"That's perfect," Cas said. Dean smiled. There was a second of silence before Cas' phone rang. It was Aaron. "Sorry," Cas said to Dean. "Aaron?"
"Hey Cas. Where are you?" Aaron asked.
"I'm out with my friend Dean," Cas said.
"Oh. Well that's okay. I got off work early today and I thought maybe we could spend some time together, make a night of it, but if you're busy that's okay," Aaron said. Cas lit up like a Christmas tree. Aaron rarely ever wanted to spend a whole night with Cas.
"No, I'll be home as soon as I can. I love you," Cas babbled.
"See you soon Cas," Aaron said. They hung up and Cas jumped out of his seat.
"Sorry, I have to go. It was nice being here," Cas rushed. He dropped a twenty on the table for the burger and rushed out, leaving Dean sitting alone. If Cas had looked back, he would've seen how sad Dean looked, and maybe he would've stayed. But he never looked back.
