Chapter 18: I'm Not Gonna Let You Die

Edward's P.O.V.

I was climbing out of the rubble of Laboratory Five's wall in search for a homunculus calling them self Envy. THAT GUY OR GIRL IS GETTING IT FOR CALLING ME SHORT!!!

"Scarlett!! Scarlett?!? Can you hear me?!?" I heard Al yell, and I looked over the rubble to see him furiously tossing bricks and window panes aside. Huh, why's he doing that? Scarlett isn't under there.

"Scarlett?" I looked around the barren yard to find her pop out from the side of the lab and grin. You look worse than death, shorty. Is what she'd say.

Except, I didn't see her. She didn't say that.

My eyes widened as my brother tried to unearth something-no, please let me be wrong. "I can't see her!!" Oh god, no. I slid down to where they were and I yelled her name all the way. About five minutes of searching, Armstrong with Mustang showed up in the State police car.

"Help! Mustang! Armstrong!" I called to them as I threw a cluster of bricks away. "It's Scarlett!!"

With that the two came running. All four of us clawed and yelled; hoping to catch any sign of the red head. I was losing hope.

I didn't love her. If that's what anyone was implying. No, I couldn't love her the way the other Edward did.

But after what we've been through already, after she became a close friend, I didn't want her to go.

Please don't leave!

Scarlett's P.O.V.

Okay, I can hear your voices, I wanted to call out, but I grunted as I struggled with a beam on my legs. The little bubble of air and safety I had was a fragile as glass, and I was afraid that if I spoke it would come crashing down.

"BLACK SHADOW!" Well, it seems they've got Armstrong's help. Even in my situation I felt a small grin come onto my bruised face.

A rock from above moved, but it seems like the person above was preoccupied with something else. No, he was putting down the rock! As quickly and quietly as I could, I scooted my hands up from my sides where they helped absorb the shock from my fall.

Clapping my hands there was a ringing in my ears, then there was a small fire on my gloves.

"Please help me.." I murmured quietly. My hair was splayed all over my face along with bits of debris.

"She's here! Al! Help!" I heard Edward yell before the hands finally removed the rock on top of my safety bubble. I squinted as the bright golden lights blinded me. The fire was still in my hand, but grew small due to my little concentration. "Scarlett! We're getting you out of there!"

I didn't open my eyes, but I laughed at Ed. "I'm not dying you idiot. In fact, take your time; it's comfy down here." I put on a facade of silliness, but that soon faded as I grimaced with more pressure on the support beam. Ug. My sides feel like they're being squeezed.

More scraping and desperate cries rang out, but you know what? I'm tired. I think I'll take a small nap............

"Will she be alright?"

"She should be up soon, Ed. Stop checking on her every five minutes and maybe she'll wake up."

I couldn't help but think of chuckling. So I really scared him, did I? With all my might, I opened my eyes and was met with a FUCKIN BLINDING LIGHT!! You trying to pick a fight with me sun?!

"Ug. I feel like shit." I murmured as I used my arm to cover my eyes. I felt the sheets of the bed move to my right, and there was Ed. He was sitting in a chair and leaning on his arms as he slept.

Then an idea came to mind.

"Edward.." I coped as I reached my hand over to his head. I got close to his ear with a grin on my face. "WAKE UP PIPSQUEAK!!" And of course, that did the trick. He fell to the floor screaming.

I couldn't hold back the laugh in my throat as it bellowed out loud.

He looked up at me, underneath his hair, golden eyes shined back.
And he smiled back.
And he laughed as well.

"So I missed all that?!" I whined.
Apparently he and Al had the whole, 'you're real! I simply wanted to ask if your were angry at me!' Talk. Now they say they're all bros again. Pity. I wanted in on the Drama Llama's act.

"Yeah. That's what you miss when you get a building dropped on you." Ed chuckled; it was one of those uneasy ones though. The kind that you choke on halfway through. He looked away from me as he set a stern frown on his face. "We're planning on traveling to our teacher's house. Maybe she has any information about the Philosopher's Stone, but first I promised Winry we'd take her to Rush Valley."

Wait.

Pause.

This. This moment. Maes Hughes. I never saw Hughes again after-

"Alright." I shrugged submissively. "Ya see, I've got business still to attempt to here, so I'll meet up with you later."

"Wait: little red flag going up." Ed squinted his eyes as he waved his finger as if it were the Amestrian flag. "Why? You never let us go anywhere without you. What's with the change of heart?"

"Okay, for one, I am not your nanny. Second, what about a the lab? I let you go in while I chilled outside with Al. Third, because I am technically older than you so I get to do things by myself." Smirked at the last one. Mostly because he blew up about that one.

"I don't know what kind of business you have here. I mean, I already gave Hughes some drawings on those, "Homunculi", so he'll take care of the rest." Edward explained.

"Heyyyyy! I heard my name!" Hughes popped his head into the hospital room, with that grin plastered into his face like always. "So Scarlett's staying in town for a couple of days? I could really use your help on this Hommunculi thing."

"N-"

"Sure thing. It gives me time to get to know you better." I smiled as I smashed my hand into Ed's face.

~*~

"I'll meet up with you once you get to Rush Valley, okay?" I tossed Al Edward's suitcase. It was a day after I was released from the hospital. Or should I say I snuck out. They'll never catch me.

"Alright, and take it easy Scarlett." Al set a hand on my shoulder. "Please." I couldn't help but grin up at him. Telling a false promise, he nodded and boarded the train with Winry and Ed.

"Bye Scarlett!" Winry waved to me, and of course I waved back.

~*~

"So what's the plan Stan?" I asked Hughes as I sat down in his chair. He was scratching his head in confusion as he stared down at the pictures (how are they pictures?!) that Ed supposedly drew. Along with a map of Amestris.

"First of all my name's not Stan," Hughes grinned a grin that made me smile. God, please let this man live. He deserve it so much. I don't care about what his death meant; that led us up to beat the bad guys.

But he stopped his sentence, and took a pen from his coffee cup. Leaning over the map, he circled a city.

"Liore." He murmured. My eyes widen as I stood up to walk over to him.

"These endless uprisings. The Philosopher's Stone. Human Sacrifices." I gulped. How could I forget? "And the outright genocide of the Ishbalan people." I grabbed the pen and began to connect the dots until something came up that sickened me.

"Who could have done something like this? Who could have orchestrated something like this?!" Hughes angrily held the paper up in his large hands.

We both had the same idea: we had to tell someone- anyone!

The door shut behind us,

And there was that voice.

"Hello Lieutenant Colonel. Nice to meet you and General Scarlett Reems." How did Lust know my name?!? She still had the same long black hair, skintight dress and gloves on that I remember. "Though, hello isn't the word that's appropriate."

Oh shit.

"Get behind me Hughes." I commended, and he did just that. Though after commenting about her 'cool' tattoo.
She attacked with her nails, and I blocked with alchemy as Hughes threw his knife into her head.

"OUT. NOW." I yelled as I pushed him out the door and down the hall.

"But she's dead no-"

"She doesn't understand the term YOLO man!" I replied hastily. I led him past the command central's phones, which confused him for but a second before he began to understand.

"Trust no one, right?" He whispered to me as we ran past the park and to the nearest phone booth. "Is that why you stayed in central? To stop something from happening??"

"Look," I said in an exasperated tone. "I stayed because I want you to live. Now call Roy while I stand guard." He nodded before dialing in the numbers and asking for Roy.

Halfway through yelling with the operator, I heard footsteps. And who comes out of the shadows with gun raised?

Not Maria Ross. I can tell you that.

"I'm gonna have to ask you to step away from the phone." Imposter said in her voice. And Hughes almost did!

"That's not Maria." I said, and he pointed out that she had a mole under her right eye. And just like that, the imposter created a mole.

"I've been waiting for this moment, Scarlett Reems. Ever since I met you in that alternate world." Envy grinned with vigor on Ross's face.

How does this Envy know me?! He died a long time ago!!

"Take it easy will ya," Hughes was planning an attack, I could tell it in his tone. And at gunpoint too.

Brownie points.

"She's just a kid, and I've got one and a wife at home." He pulled out a knife and was beginning to turn his arm to throw it when-

"ENVY!!" I screamed as my hands came together at the same time it's finger was wrapped around the trigger. I have to save Hughes!! That was the only thought going through my-

BANG!
