Chapter 13: Under the Willow
Scarlett's P.O.V.
I sat on the largest branch I could find after the story. The tree, which was a large willow, supported my weight nicely and I looked out at the scenery in front of me. All was quiet and nothing but the chirping of crickets and fireflies decorated the fields like small flashlights. I smelled the freshness of the wind as it rustled my hair and threw it over my shoulder. Just like the first time I came here with Ed and Al. I smiled at the memory, and felt a melody drift into mind. I didn't recognize the song, I simply sang it.
"Down by the water, under the willow, Sits a Lone Ranger minding the willow." I softly murmured the words. "He and his wife once lived happily, planted a see that grew through the reeds.."
Edward's P.O.V.
I tried sleeping for the longest time, but nothing helped. The other Edward loved her, but what was she to me? A friend? An acquaintance? I sighed and pulled a hand through my bangs.
"Summers and winters, through snowy Decembers, sat by the water close to the embers. Missing out the lives that they once had before.." My head snapped up at the sound. "I wouldn't leave you, I would hold you, when the last day comes. What if you need me? Won't you hold me? On the last day, our last day...."
"Al, I'll be right back.." I murmured to him and got out of bed. My right leg felt pins and needles slowly form. I walked out the door, and up the stairs to the balcony.
Mr. And Mrs. Dreamed of a willow, carving their names into their willow.."
I finally reached the balcony, and quietly opened the door and crept outside in the calm night air. Was that Scarlett singing?
"If he had spoken, love would return, spoken inside, too soft to be heard. Summers and winters, through snowy Decembers, sat by the water remembering embers..." I looked over the side of the balcony; towards the willow tree. Looking hard, I could barely see her red hair through the leaves and darkness.
"Missing out the lives that they once had before. I wouldn't leave you, I would hold you, When the last day comes. What if you need me? Won't you hold me? On the last day, our last day.." She stopped singing after that. She was crying again; I could hear her. I needed to do something about this cause I don't do crying girls! Racing down the stairs as quietly as I could, I walked out to where she perched above me.
"Someday the timing will all come together," I quietly sang back up to her, but I suck, so it probably sounded like a dying animal. "The mishaps will turn into sunny Decembers, the Lovers will be able to find their Willow.." I murmured, hoping really hard she didn't hear that last part. Damn! What's happening to me!? I DO NOT LIKE HER. PLEASE DISREGARD THAT OTHER PART.
She then looked down at me, giving me a smile. "I wouldn't leave you, I would hold you, when the last day comes," then, I sang along as well.
"I wouldn't leave you, I would hold you, when the last day comes. What if you need me? Won't you hold me? On the last day, our last day..." I couldn't deny it, but it was a beautiful song. I opened my eyes to see her looking down at me, a loving smile on her lips. I smiled back up at her, but realized- what the hell was I doing!?! I turned away from the tree and made my way back to the house.
"If you're gonna be our bodyguard and follow us around, I guess we can classify you as a friend. And nothing more than that!!" I yelled back up to her without turning around, and walked to my room. I closed the door quietly, and jumped when I heard Al's hollow chuckle.
"What was that, brother?" He asked, but I brushed off the question and hopped into bed.
"I don't know what that was myself." I murmured so quietly, it seemed like a breath of air.
Scarlett's P.O.V.
The next day came quickly and Winry had Edward's arm and leg fully repaired. After connecting the nerves, and setting him onto the couch, she pulled a hand through her hair and eyed my left hand.
"You have automail limbs too?" She asked as she studied my arm, and gave me a suspicious look. "And it kinda looks exactly like mine.." I heard Alphonse give a 'uhhhhh...' Type of sound before launching into a totally fake story. Look, I know that the brothers are protective of this alternate timeline, but what happens when people start suspecting stuff of the Mini Me just starting her great life?
Oh well, they'll forget. It's not like anybody else can remember that life.
"Ed, you ready to leave?" I turned my head to Edward who was now up on his new feet as he stretched his shoulder. He gave me a thumbs up and walked over to us.
"Thanks Winry, Pinako." He smiled at the two. I also smiled at their parting hug.
"Now young man, I don't want this to be like last time I see you in three years, so come over for dinner now and then, boys!" Pinako gave a disappointed glare at the brothers, before turning to me with a smile. "You too. Such a nice lady, I didn't know Edward knew someone with kindness."
"WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO IMPLY SHORT STACK!?" He yelled, his voice at full volume.
"You know exactly what I mean bean sprout." She snapped back.
"WHAT!?!? YOU'RE SHORTER THAN ME YOU STAKE IN THE GROUND!" I laughed as Al started to drag Edward out of the house. I waved goodbye and was about to follow after the armor, but...
"Keep them safe, will you? Ed doesn't like help, but make sure they live. That's all I will ever ask from you, so can you do it?" I turn back to Winry as she was on the verge of tears. God, this girl is a sissy, but I guess that's okay.
Someone has to shed some tears for us.
I gave her a dazzling smile, and said, "Always."

Edward's P.O.V.
We waited outside of the station for Scarlett to arrive. In the meantime, many of the villagers came by and wished us both a safe trip; giving us small gifts. I sat there on the marble steps before I was hugged around the waist by a tiny body.
"Edward!!" I heard the little girl exclaim, and I laughed before patting her head and waving to her father, Richard Reems.
"Hey Scarlett." I said. No wonder the name was so familiar. Scarlett's name was exactly the same as Richard and Sophia's kid. She let me go and gave me a toothy grin as she boasted about losing her first tooth in a fight at school. Alphonse took the girl into his arms and threw her into the air playfully.
"Whatcha waiting for?" She asked curiously, and I said,
"Our friend; she came with us here."
"Oh, her! Ana Dennis!" That's not Scarlett's name, but I guess she couldn't really say that because it's the exactly the same as this girl's.
"Uh, yeah!" Al covered for my hesitation, and then we were saved by the train.
"Sorry guys!" I heard our Scarlett come running, and there she was. Panting heavily from her run; while sweat seemed to coat her forehead. "Hard time getting through town." She looked at little Scarlett, then to me and Alphonse.
"Why are you staring at me?" She asked slyly while placing a hand on each hip. WAIT-I WAS STARING!?!?
"Let's just get on the train already!!" I yelled and hopped on as fast as I could and took a seat near the window.
If I was any slower, she would've seen me blush.
