A FIRST CLUE

While the two of them keep going up and down the stairs to get more boxes, I decide to use the time to peek into one of the boxes in front of me.

I carefully open the lid of the box, a little anxious that there might be some dead creatures inside, or worse, live ones crawling towards me. But to my relief, there are no creatures inside, dead or alive, inside the box, just some photographs of a beautiful woman. She has fair, black hair, put up in a bun. In the first photo she is wearing a gardening outfit and holding a spade in her left hand. She is smiling at the camera. The other photos are nothing special. They mainly show the woman in the garden, tending to flowers. Then one picture catches my eye. It is a wedding photograph. The woman is wearing a long white dress and her hair falls loosely over her shoulders. And she is holding a bunch of flowers. She is standing next to a man wearing a black suit. He too has black hair. Both are smiling into the camera, like they are the happiest they could ever be.

I recognise the woman at once. She is the ghost that is haunting me. But who is she? And what does she want from me?

I call to Jay and Cedric to come to me immediately.

They rush in with two more boxes under their arms and place them on the table next to me. Then they both peek over my shoulder to see what I have found.

"That's her. That's the ghost. I was going through these other pictures here...," I say, waving the stack of photos in their faces. Jay takes them from me and studies them, still listening closely to what I am saying.

"... but didn't recognise her, because she has her hair pinned up in a bun on this one," I point to the photo that Jay is now holding.

"I see. And who is the guy standing next to her?" Jay asks.

"I don't know. I have never seen this person before," I say.

"Right, well, it seems to be a wedding photo... so that guy could be her husband maybe, or a relative, or a brother, or even just a really good friend. It will not be easy to identify him because we only have this one wedding photo. So, we have to try and find out who he is and what his relationship is to her exactlym" Jay says.

So, we continue to look through the rest of the boxes, hoping to find some more wedding photos or other photos that might help us identify this guy. Also, the question is, if this is the detective M.C. Krause's wife, or if it is the wife of some other previous owner.

A lot of the things we find in the boxes, are not helpful at all, like birthday cards from friends and family. The only thing we were able to find out from these, is that the woman's first name is Jane.

Then Cedric finds a stack of letters. They are all from a girl called Elise, who seems to have been a very close friend of Jane's.

"Look here. I have found her surname and her address," Cedric voices, pointing to the front of the envelope.

On the envelope, as you would see on any envelope that is sent to someone by post, is the woman's name and address. It reads:

Jane Williams

3 Llys Heulog

Llandrindod Wells

Powys, Wales

G.B

LD1 6DQ

"Brilliant, now we have a lead," Jay says with a big smile on his face.

"Okay, first thing tomorrow morning we are driving down to her address in Llandrindod Wells. Maybe we are lucky and she still lives there, or maybe the people there can help us find out who exactly this woman is," Cedric points back to the photo of the woman in the garden that is still lying on the table.

"But you are not going to leave me all alone in this godforsaken place, are you?" I look worried.

"No, of course not. What kind of people do you think we are?" Jay looks a little hurt.

I give him an apologetic look. I did not mean to hurt him. I was just afraid of staying in this house all by myself.

"You are coming back to our place with us," Jay smiles at me.

"She is?", Cedric looks confused. "Can I talk to you for a moment in private please, Jay?"

He then walks to the other side of the room. Now it is Jay who gives me an apologetic look, as he seems to have no idea, what Cedric's problem is with me coming back to their place.

It only takes a few minutes of whispering before they both come up to me again.

"Sorted," Jay smiles.

I quickly grab some clothes and some other essentials that I basically always carry around with me and we head out the door to their car.

Cedric gets into the driver's seat of the black Mercedes that is parked in my driveway and Jay opens the back door for me to get in. Once I am in, he walks around the car to the passenger seat and gets in.

Then Cedric drives us to their apartment, which only takes about 15 minutes.

"You can have my room for the night," Jay leads me into his room. The room consists of just a bed and a small cupboard, which immediately reminds me of the student apartment I had shared with Layla for my first two years in Aberystwyth.

I give Jay an uncertain look, feeling bad about taking his room.

"I can sleep on the couch, it's no problem," I tell him, but he reassures me that it is no problem for him and that he will be on the couch in the living room, if I need anything.

With those final words, I put on my nightgown and lie down. It is only now that I realise how exhausted I actually am, and I am very grateful to both of them that I will be able to get a good night's sleep in a house that is not haunted by ghosts.
