Prologue

8 Years Earlier:

Bang. It feels like the whole house shakes when he slams into mummy. I cower in the corner as he continues to beat her. I hope I can stay hidden. I don't want him to find me.

He starts shouting and yelling at mummy, and when she doesn't respond, he pushes her to the floor. I wonder why she's sleeping. I would never have been able to sleep like she did.

I see him glance around the room, trying to find me. Once he sees me, his eyes harden and he runs to me. He reaches under the table and grabs me by my neck holding me up to his head height. I shake in fear when his eyes suddenly turn a bright red, then fade to pitch black. He snarls at me and throws me across the room, and I land on the edge of the kitchen bench, and I feel massive pain spreading through me, from my head to my toes. Suddenly, I see mum get up and walk over to me, and the pain suddenly stops, and everything looks cloudy and hazy. She has a soft smile on her face, but once she sees how I'm laying, they turn cold and hard.

"No." She says, horrified. "It's not your time. I won't let this happen." She shook her, in denial. "You must go back now."

I shake my head and look at her with tears in my eyes. "No! I don't wanna go back! There's no pain here, and I can be with you forever!" I start nodding frantically, getting really excited. She smiles at me sadly. "I'll still be with you, sweetie. No matter what. Always."

I start to protest again, but she just smiles and gives me a slight push. I fall backwards, and then realise I'm back on the table. I open my eyes and go to sit up, but it's too painful. I turn my head to look for mummy, and I see her standing next to me, but she's laying on the floor too. There's two of her. Her eyes are open and there's this red stuff coming from her head.

I wonder what that is.

All of a sudden he turns and runs straight out of the house and I crawl over to mummy, through the pain, and try and wake her up, but nothing I do wakes her up.

I keep trying until I can't move anymore, and I fall down next to her. It feels like I'm lying there for days, but I can't move, and she doesn't wake up.

One day I hear someone pounding on the door, and I stay quiet because that's how he used to come in, and I wanted to protect mummy. After a while, they leave, and I relax a little, but then I hear more people coming up to the door.

Three people run in and go to mommy, and I shiver in fear and pain.

"P-please don't hurt me!" I pray quietly.

One of the people notice me and run over to pick me up.

"It's going to be alright, you're safe now." That's what the lady said to me.

"Soon, you'll be in a nice, new home."

Then she picks me up and carries me outside to a shiny, black car.

The last thing I see, is them putting mummy into a black bag and zipping it closed.

I wonder why.
