Safe! Or...Not?

I look up at the umpire. He has an unreadable expression on.

"She is SAFE!" He yells doing the hand gesture. The second baseman makes a face and looks like he was about to say something. The umpire noticed this too.

"Argue with me about it, and you'll be out of the game. Got it?" He asks in an intimidating voice. The player nods his head. The umpire begins to walk back to his place when the second baseman leans over to whisper something in my ear.

"Consider yourself lucky, next time, it won't be as simple for you Girl." He says with acid on his tongue. The word that bothered me the most was girl. I lean towards him.

"Don't underestimate me because of my gender. Be prepared for anything." I say before Eacker steps up to the plate. When the pitch comes, he checks it then swings. It hits the bat then goes flying between second and first as a line drive.

The second I see that the second baseman didn't stop the ball and continued into the outfield, I began sprinting to third base. Once they recover the ball Eacker had just stopped on second, but I was still running home. The second baseman threw the ball towards home. I was almost there when I see the catcher just  about to catch it.

I quickly dropped into a slide and did as much as I could to make it under the tag. When I made it over the plate I look to the umpire.

"She's safe again!" He yells. I can hear my team cheering as I go over to grab Eacker's bat. As I'm walking back I feel someone push me to the ground. When I look up I see the catcher looming over me.

"Thanks for making me look bad. Couldn't even get the joke of a ball player out. I'll never hear the end of this." The mutter before attempting to go back into their catching stance. I say attempting because the second I stand up is the second I rip their catching mask off and punch him in the face.

The umpire quickly notices what's going on and runs over to separate us. I see out of the corner of my eye Philip run out of the dugout towards us. But thy are to late, at this point I have the catcher pinned and I'm punching him multiple times in the face.

Suddenly I feel hands trying to pull me off of the catcher and I see the catcher getting pulled out from under me. I turn and see Philip glaring, I think at me. When I turn back to the umpire who is helping the catcher up he looks at me with a slightly angered expression.

"Your out of the game. This league does not tolerate violence of any sort!" He says pushing me towards the dugout.

As I walk out I am booed by the other team, I don't care but it was really annoying so I flipped them off and walked back to the dugout. I plop down on the wooden bench, I can feel the eyes of all my teammates on me.

I look at them and they all quickly look away, well all but one. Philip.

"What were you thinking?! We went over this Daniella, did you forget?" He scolds me.

"No I didn't forget but that catcher had it coming. He wanted to start saying something just because I'm a girl, I  don't deserve that kind of discrimination!" I defend myself. He squeezes the bridge of his nose, resembling his father very much.

"I understand that Daniella, but you can't get all hot headed just because someone says something you don't like.  Do you realize how much I hear- no this entire team hears on a daily basis about how 'we are obviously the weakest team in the league because a girl plays with us', do you realize how much that makes us wanted to say something or do something to show them how we are not weak? But do we act upon that urge? No. We don't. So are you saying that just because you are a girl you're the only one who gets discriminated?" He says looking at me.

"I never said that. Quit putting words in my mouth!" I say growing agitated.

"Then what are you saying?" He says crossing his arms.

"I-I...I'm saying that I don't need this." I say then begin to pack up my stuff.

"What are you doing Daniella?" I hear him ask. I'm ignoring you, idiot. "Daniella?"

I begin walking out of the dugout with my bat bag slung over my shoulder.

"Where are you going? You do realize I'm your ride home, right?" I hear him say following behind me.

"Yeah. But I think I need some time away from-" I turn and wave my hand around "-all this. Text me when the nice game is. Until then, don't talk to me." I say continuing my walk away from the fields.

"Daniella, don't be like this. Daniella, Danny!" I hear him plead while I continue walking. I don't need him.

I make my way down the road. Well, if this is a half hour drive this this is gonna be a decently long walk. Yay.
