Vanadessë's Birth
A/N: Just FYI, Amariel is around 4 in a human's perspective, Arwen is around 8, and the twins are around 12.
Elrond was startled awake when he felt his wife stir. He blinked a few times, clearing all traces of sleep.
"Are you alright?" He asked, noticing Celebrían's confused look.
"I thought I felt something..." she murmured. "It couldn't be. It is far too early." However, as she finished, her eyes abruptly widened, and she let out a small gasp of pain. She looked at Elrond, worry clear in her eyes. "It's coming."
*
Amariel was awakened by a cry of "GLORFINDEL!", her father's voice splitting the air. Moments later, the golden-haired warrior was running past her room.
Climbing out of her bed, Amariel walked over to the edge of her sister's bed across the room. "Arwen!" She whispered, nudging her arm.
"What is it this time, Amariel?" Arwen muttered, yawning.
"Ada called out for Glorfy, and then-" Her words were cut off when Glorfindel rushed back down the hall, only to appear a few moments later carrying something, a bag of herbs slung around his shoulder.
Arwen and Amariel looked at each other for a moment, before rushing off in search of their brothers.
*
"What happened?" Glorfindel asked, seeing Elrond's flustered expression and tears running down Celebrían's face.
"The baby wasn't in the right position" Elrond said, starting to search through the herbs. "I had to turn it."
"It's coming?" Glorfindel's face soon looked equally troubled.
Elrond soon found what he was looking for, and crushed the leaves in a glass of water. "Drink this" he told Celebrían, gently propping her up. "It will help with the pain."
Celebrían obeyed, tears flowing not from the pain, but for the fear of losing her child.
Elrond was just as nervous as she was, but he knew what had to be done. "When your next pain comes, push."
*
"Wake up!" Amariel whisper-shouted, jumping up onto Elrohir's bed. Arwen moved over to Elladan, prodding his arm.
Elrohir was the first to react. "What do you want?" He asked, a bit dazed.
"We think the baby's coming!" Arwen exclaimed, as Elladan stretched and sat up.
"It's too early" Elrohir mumbled, rolling over.
Amariel tugged at his sleeve, attempting to get him off of the bed. "Well, maybe it wants to come see us!"
"Come on!" Arwen added, motioning for the twins to follow. Elladan finally surrendered, climbing out of his bed, with Elrohir quickly following.
*
"Just a little bit more" Elrond urged his wife, knowing that the baby was nearly out. Glorfindel offered a hand to her to squeeze, and she did so, her grip stronger than he had expected.
Elrond saw the baby's head appear, and reached out to catch it. "Push, just once more!" He said.
Celebrían released a final cry of pain, and the baby slid into Elrond's hands. A small smile passed his face-they had a daughter. He began to rub her body to start the breathing, looking at her far too small size.
Moments passed, and he grew more and more nervous. "She's not breathing" he whispered, causing Celebrían to clutch Glorfindel's hand a little tighter.
Carefully, Elrond lifted the newborn up, blowing air into its tiny mouth. He continued doing so, praying for a response, a few tear escaping his eyes.
Suddenly, the baby opened its mouth, a small cry coming out. She opened her sparkling brown eyes, gazing upon her father for the first time. Even Glorfindel was crying now, but his tears were tears of joy.
Elrond gently carried the elfling over to a nearby table where Glorfindel had placed a towel. Carefully, he looked her over, smiling when he saw no injuries. The only thing that worried him was her small, gasping cries- her lungs were not fully developed yet.
He wrapped her in a small blanket, carrying her over to Celebrían. Her eyes were filled with joy as she held her new daughter, gently running her hand along her brown tufts of hair.
"Is she going to be alright?" She asked, turning her gaze from the elfling to Elrond.
"Her lungs have not developed fully" Elrond replied. "And as you can see, she is very small-smaller than I have ever seen." He walked over, placing a hand on Celebrían's shoulder. "However, I have the feeling that she's destined for something great."
Celebrían smiled, tears of happiness sliding down. "What should we name her?" She asked.
Elrond paused- he hadn't started thinking of names yet. After all, the baby was supposed to have been born nearly five months later. "Whatever you wish, my love. After all, I named Amariel, so it must be your turn" he added with a smile.
Celebrían laughed. "Well, I was thinking...Vanadessë."
"Vanadessë..." Elrond repeated, smiling. "Vanadessë Undomiel. Beautiful."
Suddenly, four figures burst into the room. Amariel was in the lead, followed by Arwen, who was pulling Elladan and Elrohir along. All of them gasped when they saw Vanadessë, and they crowded around the bed in a flurry of questions.
"Is it a boy or a girl?"
"Why is it so small?"
"What did you name it?"
"Didn't you say that it was coming in Autumn?"
"Can I hold it?"
"Can I hold it after him?"
"When are Grandmother and Grandfather going to see?"
"Is Legolas going to get to see it, too?"
Elrond gave up on trying to figure out who said what, and began to answer their many questions. "It is a girl, and her name is Vanadessë. She is small because she was born several months early, even though we thought she would arrive in the fall. No, none of you can hold her yet, she is very fragile. We will probably take her to Lothlorien when she gets a bit older, and Legolas will see her when he comes in a few months."
However, the children seemed to ignore his answers, fascinated by the tiny being.
"Is she going to live?" Elrohir suddenly asked, and all four kids looked up at Elrond with worried eyes.
"She's rather small, and she's not fully developed, but we think that she'll make it." Elrond told them, smiling reassuringly.
"She's going to live" Amariel said, looking determined. "After all, she's my sister."
"Yeah, and she's gonna be in all of the songs and stories when she grows up!" Arwen happily proclaimed.
Elrond looked at his sons, and the three of them shared a knowing look. But none of them knew just how right Arwen and Amariel were.
