As I lied on the blankets in the back of her truck, I tried to pinpoint constellations in the night sky that stretched above us.
"Do you believe in God?" she asked, breaking the silence.
I turned and looked at her in the moonlight. If she looked angelic in sunlight, she looked absolutely divine in the moon. This girl was made for me. The way her hands fit in mine, the way her head rested in the crook of my neck. It was nothing short of fate.
"I don't know, but I don't think we would have been made so perfectly for each other without something controlling our fates."
She laughed. Fuck, her laugh was musical. It made her entire face happier and her eyes light up. It made her cheeks scrunch up and her freckles more noticeable in the moonlight.
"That was lame, babe. I mean it. Do you there's something out there?"
"Yeah, I do. Well, I hope so. I don't think I should be left in charge of my own life."
She nodded thoughtfully and turned to face me.
"For the record," I added, smiling, "I wasn't joking. I think we were destined to at least find each other. I think everything has to happen for a reason. If there isn't a reason then bad things just happen? That's not a world I want to live in. So, yeah, I believe in God. What about you?"
She turned back to face the stars and smiled softly. She looked like she was made to be right here. When she didn't answer right away, I assumed she wouldn't, until she whispered to me,
"I really want to."
