It's Amazing what Regret Can Do

"So..." Jack starts off the conversation by giving to two of us mugs with warm liquid inside, I think it was tea. "What are you guys getting up to this time?"

My heart jumps a little when he says that, and it suddenly dawns on me he doesn't know what happened. Jack has no idea what's been going on right under his nose for the the last three years or so. He doesn't know about the Ghosts, the Magyk, The Blood-claws, the Four, he doesn't know about the Battle of Dragonfly. He knows nothing. I don't even know what to say.

"I'm sorry do we know you?" Jay questioned, sounding like he was playing it off but I sensed he was just as uneasy as I was.

"He's Jack, Zach's adoptive dad from way back." I filled him in.

"Oh." Jay realized. "For a second I thought a random stranger had just invited into his house and served us tea. I wasn't complaining but still."

"Jane mentioned you guys were looking for a friend, is it Zach? Is he alright?" Jack continued.

I stared at him without answering. How was I supposed to tell him that?

Jack seemed to be getting desperate. "Do you at least know he is?"

"I though you didn't care about him." Jay said suddenly, and bitterly.

Jack frowned. "Of course I care about him, I raised him. I regret what I did okay? I haven't seen him in years and, it's just, it's given me a while to think abut things, alright? I...I miss him."

"We kinda know where he is." I started, before Jay could start arguing with him. "He's got himself stuck somewhere and we're gathering a bunch of magical stuff to get him back."

Jack seemed to deflate slightly. "Oh."

"We don't have much time here." I continued. "As you can see, these are obviously not our regular bodies."

"You can say that again." Jay added, sipping his tea softly, and yawning.

"Yeah, I noticed." Jack huffed, amused. "You guys and your magyk are insane."

"How did you recognize us?" I asked, suddenly realizing this.

Jack was quiet for a moment. "If I'm being honest it was your eyes, you look a lot like him actually."

"Oh, thank you. I guess." I put my mug down and tried not to think about that.

"Speaking of recognizing, do you even know our names?" Jay pointed out. "I mean, we know yours because because Zach used- he talks about you all the time."

"Oh." Now it was Jack's turn to be pleasantly surprised. "I guess I don't."

"I'm Zara. Humans shake hands hand right?" I introduced, he nodded and shook my hand.

"Jay." He introduced, and stuck his hand out. "I'm gonna go ahead and tell you ahead of time I'm blind, so I dunno where your hand is but I hope it's in front of me."

"Oh." Jack said again, probably wondering if he was kidding or not.

Jay yawned again. It was contagious because then I yawned. Jack seemed to take this is as well.

"Geeze, it's late isn't it. You kids need to get to bed." He realized. "I can make up the couches for you, I've got some spare blankets pillows upstairs, give me a second."

He returned with what I assumed was human nesting material, it looked soft. We followed him into a bigger room than the one with the table. It had a long nest looking thing. Jack started to make one on the couch and one of the floor.

"He's making nests, one of them is on a soft thing, but it looks like the other ones on the floor. Which one do you want?" I asked Jay, as Jack finished up.

"I'll take the floor, you take the other one." He said instantly.

"Do you guys need anything else?" Water? The bathroom's just down the hall if you need it."

I wondered briefly why humans had an entire room dedicated to grooming, then dismissed it. "I think we're good."

I settled down on the couch-nest and curled up. It was comfy and warm. Jack turn the lights off, but I could still hear Jay scoping out his nest and trying to figure out how big it was. I was just drifting off to sleep when I heard a whisper.

"Goodnight Zara."

"Goodnight." I whispered back, and fell asleep.
