A Special Night?
A short chapter,, don't hurt me ;-;
________________
I was still laying on the couch while the box of light Jack called a "tee-vee" droned on in the background. It had people inside and sometimes they laughed and sometimes the cried, sometimes people where weren't even in the box laughed. I assumed it was some form of magyk, one way or another, and I was too tired to care. My eyelids were puffed up and my head was full of lukewarm balls of cotton. Jay had fallen asleep half and hour ago and was stretched out on the other side of the couch. I had pushed him away after he started snoring.
Something made a buzzing noise from the cloth enclosures of the cloths Jack had given Jay (and me but his pouch was the one buzzing) so I reached over and tried to paw through it. He woke up as I brought out the black rectangle. It was glowing and there were letters on the screen but I couldn't read this language.
"What's this?" I asked.
"I don't know. I picked it off the ground after you uh... scared off that Ted boy."
"What does it say?" I asked.
He blinked. "Does it have words on it? I wouldn't know, sometimes it makes noises when I tap it."
Jack walked in on the two of us furiously slapping our human paws against the magyk black rectangle. He frowned, obviously very amused by the sight.
"Where'd you kids find a phone?"
"A what?" I asked.
He shrugged. "Er... we use it to talk to other humans, let me see."
I handed it over reluctantly and he seemed to take in the word script and process it. I made the rational deduction that this was his language.
"We found it on the ground if that helps." Jay added.
Jack nodded up and down, contemplating. "Yeah looks like some kid named Theodore lost his phone, a couple people are texting him asking him where he is. Look's like he's supposed to be at a party or something. Hey that place is just down the road and around the corner."
A strong urge came over me, the same one from before. The itch at my scalp. The pestering scratch in my head.
"We have to go there."
Both of them looked at me questionably. I don't even remember moving my mouth.
"We should return this, it probably belong to Ted." I offered as an excuse. "I think there might also be more of the stuff we need... at this location. A party did you say? I have no idea what human parties are like but... I have a hunch."
Jay frowned.
Jack glanced back at the 'phone'. "Okay, but don't be out to late okay? It's already pretty dark."
It took all my will power not to yank it back out of his hands. I gently reached out and then dumped in my pocket. I think that must be the reason humans wore clothes, for the pockets, because otherwise they just seemed horribly stifling. I grabbed Jay's hand and started to drag him towards the door.
"Sure thing Jack, we'll be right back." I promised.
Jay yanked his hand away, annoyed, and placed it on my shoulder as I caught both of their mildly concerned looks. Whatever, once I had the itch I was consumed with getting it to stop. My feet hit the flat rocks, pavement, and suddenly Jay's hand disappeared once again. I looked back at him, wondering if we were going to go through this whole thing all over again.
"What is it? Come on we're running out of time."
He bit his lip. "Are you okay? You were really whipped out this afternoon."
"I'm fine!" I shrugged, even though he couldn't see it. "Why wouldn't I be?"
"Because you were shaking and crying just a few hours ago and I'm worried about you." He sighed, and reached out until both of his hands gracefully landed on my shoulders.
"I was...?" I frowned. "I don't remember that."
His face twisted up again into that worried knot that made my heart twist with him. "Zara... it's okay. You don't have to lie-"
"I'm telling the truth. I don't remember. It must have not been important, or maybe you dreamed it." Now it was my turn to frown.
His eyebrows flew up. "Oh. That's... alarming."
"Whatever." I shrugged one of his hands off and started to walk away slowly. "We've got a small window of time."
He followed me hesitantly but seemed to drop it, thank Glamora. My thoughts were suddenly interrupted by a familiar voice.
ah, sorry I haven't been talking to you, I've been tired,
That's okay, you're here now.
Yes, anyway Ted, the boy, find him. I'll show you where to go.
Ten-four bro.
Tonight's going to be special, so stay alert.
I raised an eyebrow to myself, wondering what that mean. Despite, I was ready, and there was a buzz in the air that made something feel different. Maybe our spell was wearing off. Maybe it was the fact we had almost collected everything we needed to bring Zach back. Whatever it was, something was going to happens whether I liked it or not. I was ready.
Something in my head seemed to grin happily at the thought.
