Part 2
*Flash*
Tom looked around, taking in the scene as he waited for the image to print. People bustled around the room, all came to see the murdered child. The cops had been chasing the criminals that did this for months, the girl was just a casualty in the massive string of burglaries the pair had commited.
He smiled when the camera whirred and the picture slid out. The image was hauntingly beautiful, they would give good money for it. The poor child lay grotesquely at the bottom of the stairs with white eyes that stared blindly at nothingness and blood matted her hair, her dress torn and dirty.
A man stepped into the threshold of the house, humming a little tune as he watched the chaos unravel in the room. Tom looked at him curiously, wondering who he was.
"The girl used to sing this song. She was such a joyful child, she sure deserved much better than this." he finally said at the end of the tune, picking up the music box that lay broken on the floor. "She loved that song." He opened the lid and a single note played but it had not the energy to play anymore. "It seems the music died with the child." He frowned, reaching down and closing the girl's eyes to allow her to rest.
The cops lifted her gently into the air, carrying her off to be taken to the crematory. Her ashes were sent to her grandfather to keep. It was only two weeks before he grew bored with the ashes and lost interest. He took the urn to the river and dumped little Susie's ashes into the rushing water. Legend among the locals says you can still hear the child's unanswered cries riding the wind in the night.
