Trying to heal
Zuko listened to hai rant and lecture him for the night and morning while he swept and cleaned the shop barely speaking back. It was all about him being irresponsible and how she didn't have to take in a destructive brat like him.
Zuko kept his eyes down and zoned out not even realizing hai stopped talking an hour ago.
"Lee," she barked and he looked at her confused.
"Eat, breakfast," hai pointed to the fruit and bean bun on the table with tea.
"We're talking," she said firmly.
"You've been talking all morning," Zuko mumbled.
"Yea yea yea, but now your gonna respond," she tapped the table again and he sat anyways.
"To what?" He ate a piece of fruit.
"Are you a fire bender or not?" she raised a brow.
"Not," Zuko looked at her.
"And fire nation?" She asked again.
"I'm not," Zuko said calmly. She smiled a little and nodded at that.
"Alright, that's all I need to know," hai didnt press much more.
"Besides, your uncle told me all I needed to know," she shrugged and Zuko gulped a little. She knew.
"Should I be expecting the dai lee at my door?" He sighed taking a bite of the bean bun.
"Then i never would've had an employee, don't be stupid," she waved him off and Zuko pursed his lips. She's known since the beginning.
"I have to go get a new door now, I'll see you tomorrow kid," she told him.
"Oh, and here's some money, I'm so sick of you always looking stressed and depressed, go to the spa or something," hai rolled her eyes setting the money in front of him.
Zuko finished his breakfast and went out where the door use to be but saw a flash of blue in the corner of his eye.
"Woooow what happened here?" Katara saw the broken door and wall as she walked over here.
"Some crazy guy?" She asked as if she never met him before.
"Super crazy, must be my terrible customer service," Zuko nodded looking back at the tea shop.
"Hai gave me an ear full for the past twelve hours, I don't wanna hear it," he crossed his arms.
"Why are You here? It's still morning," he looked at her confused.
"Everyone is out doing their own things, Aang went to the zoo to find appa maybe and Sokka went to the university, I might have to go find Toph later to see if she needs bail," Katara shrugged a little.
"That's weird, thought you were all attached to the hip or holding hands," he walked off and she stuck around.
"I'm going to be stuck with them soon enough, I'm just.. not use to being alone for that long so I went for a walk," she offered with a kind smile. Zuko went to the market anyways seeing she wasn't going anywhere.
"I mean I don't have work today now... what does some one do in their free time?" Zuko asked curiously not sure what to do with himself.
"What do you do for fun?" Katara asked.
"Nothing,"
She snorted a little covering her mouth but she knew he was probably serious also.
"I'm not laughing, it just I should've saw that one coming, your not exactly all smiles and giggles that likes to knit in his free time," she snickered and he rolled his eyes.
"I spared in my free time but that's it, or write letters to my uncle or sharpen my knife, but I also had a lot more people to talk to back home," Zuko shrugged a little and she nodded.
"What if you wrote a journal? Just random thoughts or letters to your uncle again?" She asked looking at a market booth with some bracelets.
"Could pick up a hobby," she tried on the bracelet but set it back anyways.
"Journaling?" He didn't take it seriously.
"It could be good for you, prioritizing your mind set and eventually you can see how far you've came since you started, I've heard it's really nice," she explained and Zuko found that interesting.
"Free therapy really," Katara turned back with a smile.
Zuko nodded understanding how it could be good, he did enjoy writing to his uncle- is that why Lee forced him to start writing letters.
"Okay, I'll give it a try, but you have to do it too," Zuko told her smugly.
"Really? Okay deal," she laughed agreeing as they shook each others hands for the compromise.
"It could be good for you for privacy," he offered and Katara smiled more not even realizing how it could help her as well.
"Your so right! We have to find them today," Katara was excited to try it. For how frustrated and stressed she got with her friends it's hard to let those feelings out without taking it out on them, writing about it could be healthy.
They adventured around the market till they found someone selling hand made journals. Zuko didn't touch any as he was unsure how to choose one but Katara went ahead and picked some up to look at the inside and how they felt.
"What about this one?" She showed Zuko a leather cover with carvings on the front, the brown cover had some birds carved into the front.
"No," he didn't like it.
"This one?" Another brown leather cover with trees and the top said 'wondrous'.
"You're joking?" Zuko asked flatly.
"It's pretty!" She whined.
"To you," he scrunched up his nose.
"Oh this one has colors, it's a beach," she pointed out as Zuko looked over her shoulder.
"I'll just take this one," Zuko grabbed a plain brown leather one.
"Oh come on, I picked out like three," Katara groaned.
"I like simple," he shrugged keeping it.
"Okay okay, let's buy it then," she moved on happy that he just bought one.
"What about yours?"Zuko looked at her confused.
"Oh, um I don't know," she looked over unsure if she really liked any of them. "What if you picked it out for me?"
"Isn't the journal suppose to be your heart and soul? I can't pick that shit," he huffed looking around at the options.
"What about a plain white one then?" She smiled grabbing light leather journal.
"Copying me?" Zuko teased softly.
"You have a good style I guess, plain and simple, im over thinking mine," Katara nodded determined with her journal now.
"Is this a daily thing we have to write in them then?" Zuko asked as he paid for both of their journals and they moved on.
"I don't know, dealers choice? Write how much or how little? I don't think there's a rule book," Katara held hers tightly to her chest.
"I feel ridiculous I actually got one," Zuko looked at it and flipped through the blank pages that have yet to be filled.
"Think you'll stick with it?" She asked smiling.
"Will you?" He asked.
"Only if you do, we started this together," Katara nodded.
"How do you start it?" Zuko still didn't get it.
They sat on a bench together talking about what they'd write or how they'd write, Zuko felt embarrassed to share but the way Katara was so open and welcoming for him to heal in a way, he felt less alone with her doing it as well.
She started to write to take the lead, started off with how she got to the idea as if she was explaining her thoughts to another person instead of a journal. Zuko sighed a little and write in silence.
What's the harm in trying? He had nothing else to do. Maybe it'll bring him peace.
