Cant catch a break
Katara sighed softly in a warm tub after the incredibly long day, the rich essential oils they were given surrounded her. They found appa, they fought against the dai lee, found the earth king and almost were found guilty for treason, showed the earth king all the proof long feng has been using him as a puppet in the war.
But they finally did it.
They found appa, long feng was arrested, they were ally's with the earth king to have his help in the invasion of the fire nation.
They had to go back tomorrow to speak to the earth king.
She couldn't help but think about Zuko though, over everything it rubbed her in the wrong way of how they left things. They were friends... yet they get so angry so fast with each other sometimes. She should apologize, or at least check on him. Or maybe he'll apologize.
"Katara?" Toph knocked on the door.
"Yea?" She was snapped out of her thoughts.
"Can I come in?" The blind girl asked.
"Yea go ahead," Katara steamed the room but Toph couldn't see her naked anyways.
"What's up?" She asked curiously.
"I have to tell you something," Toph gulped a little.
"I know You went somewhere and you know we fought the dai lee, but I should tell you about jet... he got injured pretty bad," she pursed her lips as Katara sat up more concerned.
"Is he alive?" Katara asked quietly.
"Truthfully I don't know, long shot said they would take care of him..." Toph told her and Katara didn't know how to react.
"Long feng got him pretty bad," she nodded.
"So he's..." Katara whispered.
"I'm really not sure," Toph gulped.
"Are you okay?" She asked worried.
Toph shrugged. So much happened in one day. Toph was a child overall.
"If You need to talk about it come find me," Katara nodded.
"Are You going to be okay?" Toph offered back.
"I'll be okay," she smiled sadly and Toph nodded.
Katara waited for her to leave before pulling her knees to her chest and sat there for a minute. She didn't know if she should cry, she was sad of coursed he didn't deserve to die young. Jet died... and she wasn't there to help? Could she have saved him? She can't believe he's dead...
Katara submerged under the water and stayed there to clear her head. She just couldn't catch a break.
-
"Good morning ma'am," Katara waved walking into hais shop while the old woman was serving. It was early in the morning so she could still get back to her friends soon to go see the earth king today.
"Oi not now, that good for nothing brat is on my last nerve," hai grumbled as a few customers looked nervous around her.
"Lee isn't here?" Katara asked confused. Since when did he miss work?
"No he's not here! And I can't make it up the stairs to his apartment so I can't even drag his ass here," the old woman scoffed annoyed.
"Is something wrong? Didn't he come back last night?" She didn't understand.
"I don't want to talk about it, he was talking all sort of nonsense," hai sighed finally and looked up at Katara.
"Go check to see if he's home for me? My hips are barely making it up my own stairs," hai asked tiredly and Katara slowly nodded.
"I can do that," she pursed her lips. She hoped Zuko wasn't still upset from yesterday, she didn't tell her friend what happened or that Zuko was even there.
Hai told Katara where Zuko was living and how to get upstairs through the back door. Katara walked down the street till she found the building and went around the back seeing the door was slightly cracked.
Katara knocked on the door and peaked her head in, it was dark with no windows.
"Lee?" She called and started to walk up the stairs to the second door.
"Zuko?" She called against closing the door all the way. Knocking on the door again upstairs but waited to see if anyone would answer.
"Zuko it's me, are you home?" Katara knocked a little louder in case he was sleeping.
There was a shuffle sound close to the door.
"Im coming in," she announced and opened the door.
Katara immediately saw Zuko passed out on the floor in front of her as he laid on his side and a broken pot was next to him.
"Zuko!" She gasped dropping to his side.
"Hey Zuko wake up!" Katara turned him on his back. He was hot to the touch, yet shivering with sweat running down his face.
Zuko whimpered softly as he breathed heavy, he struggled to open his eyes but saw Kataras worried face looking down at him.
"Katara?" He whispered confused.
"What happened? Are You hurt?" She asked touching the side of his face with the back of her hand then his forehead.
"It's hot," Zuko rasped leaning into her touch. Her hand was cool against his skin.
"Your burning up, where's your bed?" Katara asked keeping her hand against his face. He kept his eyes closed and seemed unconscious again. Katara looked around the apartment and saw a bed in the livingroom area of the apartment, he must sleep there, makes sense if he lives alone.
"Fuck your heavy," Katara grunted as she grabbed under zukos arms and dragged him to the bed.
Zuko rolled onto his side with a heavy shiver and started to cough harshly, his body flinched at every cough and buried his face in his pillow, not opening his eyes.
"You still with me Zuko?" Katara sat on the edge of the bed as she pulled the blanket higher on him.
"Mmm, can you get lee?" Zuko asked rolling over to her.
"What?" Her stomach dropped.
"Get lee, he knows what to do, don't get Jay he's useless," he whispered with the blanket pulled to his chin.
"I can't.. Lee isn't here Zuko," Katara pushed his hair out of his face.
"Mm when he gets back then, please," Zuko rasped and coughed into the blanket.
"Okay, I'll let him know," she pursed her lips touching his face again feeling how warm he was.
He mumbled something again but she didn't understand, zukos pale face was flushed red and kept his eyes closed while he mumbled. Katara pursed her lips tightly as he leaned into her touch still. She couldn't help but slide her hand up and gently touched the bottom of his scar, it wasn't rough like it seemed like.
"I'll be right back," Katara whispered and went to get a cool wet rag to place on zukos forehead.
"Your fevers pretty bad, how did you get so sick?" She frowned looking down at him but he was fast asleep once again.
He asked for lee but he knew she was there and it was her. He must've been pretty sick...
"Hey I have to go but I'll come back with some food," Katara knelt down to his level even if he was asleep.
"You going to be okay tough guy?" She smiled.
His face still looked in pain but the cloth hopefully will help cool him down. Do fire benders cool down?
She sighed again and went to stand once again, but she felt a hand grab her wrist.
"Don't,"
Zuko peaked his eyes open as he looked up at her, as if he was almost begging, his grip tightened. Katara gulped a little and nodded kneeling back down to the ground next to the bed.
"Your awake," she said softly.
"Nuh uh," he grumbled.
"When did you get sick?" Katara asked in a whisper.
He shrugged not letting go of her.
"It happens," he sighed.
"You get sick a lot?" She didn't expect that.
"Sometimes, is lee back yet?"
"Go back to sleep, I'm going to get you some water," Katara told him, she rubbed his hand gently to comfort him and he nodded following the order.
"Just don't.. leave please," Zuko breathed closing his eyes.
"I won't, I'll stay," she finally agreed, using her bending to freeze the wet cloth so it would stay cold longer.
