(Hope you enjoy this little oneshot. 😄)

Red regrets tagging along.

Standing there, his emerald eyes scanning the sponsor covering form. His black hair beside messed up the way he carded his fingers through habit.

A red raincoat shimmers to Mono's brown jacket.

And then they stare off against each other.

When Mono came back from hunting, he had a goal. To rescue a girl captured by the Hunter. The same bad guy they escaped only weeks ago.

"Are you insane?!"

Mono shrugs sheepishly, lucky him that Red's the talkative one. Maybe not so lucky.

Red's far to expressive sometimes.

"Please."

Mono whispers, begs. Even his paper bag comes off, the rarest occasion of all. Damn it, why'd he have to be so cute?

"She needs our help."

It's as if Mono knows the unexpressed feelings keeping Red awake are night. When Mono curls around the boy, when his heart beats out of place.

When it shatters every time they can't talk.

"Fine."

Red grumbled, taking Mono's hand. If he's letting the person he'd been with for years going alone.

Then he can be damned to hell.

***

Mono's...power. Curse. Spell.

Red has know idea what to call it.

"Hfhhhh!"

Both gasp, Mono's hands clutch Red's coat. Instinct as they've been each other sometime now. It slips Red's mind how long.

The only matters is Mono's safety.

He's so devoted and far that he doesn't care about dying anymore. If Mono's happy, he's happy.

His hands grips Mono's. They both push the box off the little cliff. Red gave Mono a boost to the patch of grass above.

He's helped to be pulled up after.

***

The two come across traps. Red takes mono across, the two discover a stick.

A stick.

Just sitting there in the grass, waiting to be used. Mono (surprisingly) picks up the stick and wacked into the trap.

SNAP!

It comes together, snapping the stick in half. Mono silently breathes in relief. Red relaxed since Mono is unharmed.

God, he is something else.

What exactly are they rescuing?

Mono pulls Red over to some pine cones. The bit behind gesturing. A simple game.

Throw it right, they don't die.

Seems simple enough. Red grabs the pine corn, throwing the thing against a trap. An indignant huff comes across the other side.

Mono never had the best throwing skills.

Red can take pride in his winnings.

***

They arrive once again at a kinda trapped log.

It's highly amusing. Mono instantly grabs the cones, aiming well for once. Red's heart swells with pride.

Perhaps his catching lessons have finally worked.

Walking through the grass, the two come across a house. A nice little shack in the middle of the woods.

"How quaint."

Mono snorts in amusement.

***

The house is so big. It's ridiculous.

"Damn, we could live here."

"As if."

Mono's in front, Red watching from the shadows. The silent protector to Mono's light aura.

Light dark truly match each other.

Red cups his hands, Mono allowing a boost. The door handle grabbed, it swings open fully.

Mono opens the door, flinching. Red catches him just time. He's in front now.

Red's in control.

Slowly going through a unlocked door, Red leads Mono down the stairs towards a sound of music.

'Hmmm, hmmmm, hmmm~'

It's smoke and steady, almost relaxing. Mono speed in front, Red falls the back. The protector once again.

He's not losing another loved one the signal tower.

Mono comes out another with an axe.

An axe.

"Mono!"

BAM! BAM!

The woods smashed open, Red damns Mono's big heart. Loyalty, always keeping a mind in the task.

His chest tightens at the next scene.

The girl cowers, obviously frightened. Red doesn't blame her, consider Mono decided to act suddenly.

Stupid kid.

Sometimes, Red wondered how Mono wasn't dead yet. Lord knows he wouldn't been if he hadn't tagged along.

Selfish to say, yes? Does it mean it's wrong?

Ha, heck no.

The girl is about to clutch Mono's hands, then promptly pushed the boy to the side, Mono falling in surprise at the turn of events.

Red saw actual red.

Catching the girl's arm. She freezes, obviously not the strong type, but sneaky all the same. How he knows?

He caught her long as it swung towards his crotch.

Yeah, not again.

"Red!"

Mono rasps. Voice sounding not in use despite speaking almost weekly. An impressive feat. One Red appreciates.

He hates silence.

"Who are you?"

The girl like around ten years old, just four years younger than boy in front of her. Mono is around thirteen years old.

Red's fourteen.

"I'm Six."

Red snorts.

"Six."

She doesn't answer. Ah, the silent type. Speaking only when necessary. A quality Red can admire.

He prays she isn't as naive as Mono.

He doesn't trust anyone part from him.

"Can we go now?"

Mono asked timidly. Red nods, allowing the girl to lead them above. Mono suddenly bolts to another room.

"A hat!"

Mono came back out, a new attire apparently ok his head. A raccoon like hat adorned his face.

Red wants to tear it off. He hates skinned animals.

They aren't the best looking. They aren't mean to be killed, the paper bag is needed.

"It...looks nice?"

A forced smile. Mono's gave reddens.

"T....Thanks."

Red found to cute how he stumbles his words.

Mono see the family inside the table.

It's creepy.

"The heck?"

"Just move."

Red grumbles, Mono is acting distant. Maybe it's in front of the the girl-

Six.

Reminding himself, Red rolls his eyes. Damn his short memory, he could never remember important details.

The hung hands off the attic doors, gasping when it doesn't open. It's so soft even Red almost misses it.

Mono catches it in spades, running to help the girl.

She growled lightly, stepping knees with her arms out. Mono backs away. But Six looks up, the realisation setting in.

Both need help.

She gestures, Mono lifted up to the attic doors. Red watches as they fall, maybe they'll rise.

Or they will all fall together.

***

Red likes when Mono grabs his hand.

The girl looks lightly jealous, obvious expecting to be helped up. Too bad, Mono is Red's.

Doesn't mean he has to know.

The go to move a suitcase, the two boys moving while the girl follows behind them both. It reaches the cabinet, settling beside in the right place.

Red laughs when Mono falls the floor. The other boys huffs. Six goes over to the cabinet to help Mono.

She's always straight to the point.

Three is a crowd.

***

Mono comes back with the key.

Mono sees his friend and his maybe new one standing together. Holding hands, holdings hands.

His mind freezes in place.

Red is older, sure, but he's Mono's role model. All he's knows these past few years of survival. Maybe humanity regressed the years of the world end.

Mono's instinct says to attack the threat.

His smile forced his words:

"So, help me up?"

Six operates the lever, Mono jumping to grab the hook. He succeeds, landing next to fallen key.

His smile widens a little at Red's prideful gaze.

"Let's go."

***

Welp. The Hunter's mad.

The screams when they land indicate it enough. Red startles a chuckle, instead replaced by a yelp. Mono allows to Six fo boost him to a bathroom.

"Mono..."

The other hangs his like a child caught with candy.

Red finds it flattering Mono relies on his approval.

Six helps Mono push the desk, all three heading to a room. That's where they see the enemy.

The hunter working his finest prey.

The trio bend down, sneaking on crouched knees. Mono grips Red's hands, as if protecting the older boy. His eyes still look at Six occasionally.

When they reach the door, all hell breaks loose.

BANG!

A shot rings, the hunger is angry. Red whoops as they all run toward the nearest barrel. Mono is next to the boy.

He hopes they make it out alive this time.

***

BANG!

The gun shoots again. The gun is shot again.

Oh God, Red wants to kill the hunter. Him and Mono shouldn't have gone here. To rescue the girl.

On the other hand, it kinda worked out.

Mono's hands with his, a subtle gesture. To protect the boy he's knows all his life. Mono misses Red's blush.

Someday he might tell the truth.
