#5

I pant with my back up against a box. I've been awake for such a short time, yet I'm ready to go back to sleep. Now that I'm not around the area where I slept, I should probably find something to eat. Maybe there's some sort of restaurant nearby. I seem to never be able to memorize where everything is in this town, even though I've been here my entire life. People like me don't get around very much.

I quickly push off the box and jog over to the mouth of the ally. This street only has a few of them walking around, but it still scares me to see their drooping faces. The street is a newly laid type of tar that is a midnight black color. None of the old four wheeled machines come around to use them anymore, so they just walk on them. There's too much pollution to risk making things worse. Thankfully the black pavement, that so different from the worn gray of the others I crossed, will let me bled in with my cloak.

Wasting no time, I quickly sprint across the road. No cries of alarm reach my ears, so I must be safe, for now at least. I now stand beside a stone building, surprisingly only one story. I understand why when the faint smell of something sweet drifts by on an unseen breeze. It must be some sort of bakery or candy shop. I can't even remember the last time I had anything that tasted sweet. Most places are way to busy to go near. Now, how to get in?

I glance up at the large wall above me, looking for some way up. A small window is on this side of the building. Could I somehow get up to it? The window is propped open by a small stick. I look around the alley for anything usable. My eyes light up when I see a stack of cardboard boxes. I run over and push the box towards the wall of the building. I go back for a slightly bigger box and push that one over as well. The third one is too heavy for me to even budge. I could try and think of something else, or I could try the front of the store.

I decide that it's too risky to go to the front. I'll stay here and find some other way to get up higher. Looking around once more, I spot a metal rod leaning against a wall. I walk over to it and give it a push, slightly cringing at the sound. I pull the bar over to the boxes, straining to lift it up. Slowly and painfully, I maneuver the rod to lay against the building from on top of the second box. I then use the little grooves to climb up and into the window. I crouch on the windowsill and carefully analyze my surroundings.
