Chapter 8

We arrived back at the village just before midday after a tiring trek back home, eager to rest and see everyone again. People rushed to us, asking how the hunt went and in the crowd of people I could see Nizhoni, a girl around little wolf's age come to him and help tend to his wounds while the others brought the bison to be stored and cooked for later. A while after I rested from the long journey home, some of the women asked how my first hunting trip went while helping preparing the food for tonight's dinner. Once dinner was prepared and cooked, it was time for dinner.

After a while of everyone eating, our chief Soaring Buffalo, stood up and began to speak and announced it was now time to celebrate my womanhood and thanked the gods for our efforts and for the successful first hunt this year. Once he was talking, we were allowed to go back to eating our meal. Whispers or laughter picked up again and there was also talk of my womanhood celebration and who was going to take me as a wife once I had it and couldn't help but feel nervous at the thought of being wed soon and of my ceremony. I then took small bits of food as I listened on some of the conversation that happened around me. Once dinner was done, slowly people started their way back to their huts, tired out from the long day and the many conversations they had while at dinner. As I got up to go to my hut, little wolf approached me.

"Little feather. Can I speak with you for a moment?"

"Yes, what is it?"

"Not here. Let's talk where we won't be disturbed." He said as he lightly touched my arm then started walking towards the darkness. I followed him as thoughts began swirling in my head on what he might have wanted to but couldn't in front of so many people.

We stopped a ways away from the huts but not too far where we couldn't be seen by the rest of the village. He turns to look at me and sighs a little breath before speaking.

"Little feather. I've talked to my father about after your womanhood, I would like you to became my wife. Father says he'll think it over and let me know once your celebration is over. I hope you'll agree with the decision."

My eyes widen with surprise. I couldn't find the words to speak properly as I stood there trying to process what he just said and how I should respond. I knew everyone would expect me to yes since he's the son of the chief and it was a great honor to marry him. I've always felt safe with little wolf and we had been friend since we were younger and was always willing to help me when I needed it. But I was a hesitant at to accept right away. I wanted to be sure it was the right choice and what the gods wanted before replying.

"I'll think it over, little wolf. I want to be sure that the gods will allow our marriage to happen. Can I give my answer by my womanhood ceremony?"

"Of course. Take all the time you need, I'll respect whatever your decision is. I can promise you that." He said, taking my hand in his and giving a little squeeze before walking back towards the village.

I just stood there, still a little bit surprised by the sudden confession. At first I couldn't think and for a moment I couldn't breath til I took a minute to breath slowly in and out, as I heard the quiet sounds of frogs croaking, bugs chirping in the far off distance, the sound of people started to go quiet as well and I could hear the faint sound of the fire burning out from earlier in the evening. Once I got myself together and was calm, I knew I needed to think about little wolf's propose of marriage tonight and give my answer soon. Little wolf was kind and brave but he was also loving and gentle and would help anyone who asked. He was like a brother to me and I knew he would make a good husband. I sighed before walking back to the village, quietly listening to the animals chirping away and watching the moon as it casted its bright light on the ground and onto the village almost like a veil in the night.
