Chapter 7
Crossing the Great Plains, everything seemed to stand still. Nothing seemed to move, like time had frozen still. It took all of my might to stay calm and take slow and steady breaths as we walked to where everyone else was. But the thought of little wolf being dead raced through my mind as we came closer and closer to where I could see everyone gathered around little wolf, concerned. I bent down to little wolf's level and took off my bag and set it on the ground. As I opened my bag and started looking for the medicine I needed to help stop the pain and patch it up, I asked little wolf where it hurts the most on his body.
He pointed to his shoulder on the right side, blood slowly pouring out as he moaned in pain from moving. I grabbed what medicine I needed for this kind of injury and began cleaning and applying medicine to his shoulder to stop the bleeding and infection from happening. Once I got his shoulder stitched up and wrapped up and tied in a sling. Ahote then told him to stay behind with me while the rest of the men went out and tried again this time, with a more sickly and or young bison. As much as I knew little wolf wanted to go, he agreed to stay behind anyway.
The sun began rising to midday as little wolf and me waited for the rest of the men to come back. A lone log sat in the spot where we waited, it's bark covered in moss and every once in a while, a bug or two would appear and either hid or fly away as little wolf moved ever so slightly as he sat upon it.
"Thank you for tending to my arm." He said.
"You're welcome. I am glad it was just a broken arm and not much more worse." I replied.
Time continued to move slowly as we sat in silence once again. The shadows of the trees and grass crept ever closer to us as the sun started to slowly come down in the sky. The grass continued to slowly blow in the breeze and the birds continued to chirp away.
Just as we we're becoming more uneasy, we hear shouting in the distance but it wasn't sad or angry but happy. We both sat up and we could see in the distance, the hunting party return with a huge bison tied with some rope as they dragged it to us, blood trailing behind it as they went. Once they reached us, we took what we needed from the dead animal and thanked the gods, for this great gift and sacrifice who we killed and prayed it was at peace. When we were done, we gathered out supplies and started our way home, just as the sun was beginning to set on the horizon, leaving everything golden and bright in our wake.
