Chapter 5
Early the next morning, we began packing up our stuff after having a quick breakfast and began heading out again. We walked for some time, before Ahote stopped and signaled that everyone else stop as well. He then motioned to a couple of the others to circle around the area quietly while the rest of us stayed standing there, looking around for whatever Ahote heard from within the woods. A few moments passed before we heard a noise coming a few bushes from the west of us. As the men stood ready to attack whatever was about to jump out at us, I noticed something dark and furry from the tree line.
"Look. I think it's a bear." I said and pointed in the direction in where I saw the animal. Everyone else then looks to where I pointed at and Ahote then says "It's a bear. Everyone be careful and don't make any sudden moves or noises."
The bear stops moving and looks at us, waiting to see what we would do. As the men had their weapons ready to fight, they quietly waited to see what the bear did and not wanting the bear to charge us head on. After a few long moments of this, the bear finally waddles away, back into the underbrush from which it came from. Once we knew for sure that it was truly gone, some of the men released a sigh of relief as the bear decided not to attack us. I had also gave a sigh of relief at this, for if the bear had indeed attacked us, I wouldn't know what to do or what would happen if me or one of the men had gotten hurt or even killed. Ahote then told us that we should probably kept moving since we had already wasted enough time with the bear and needed to make haste if we were to find anything to hunt and bring back to the village.
After some time, we came across a river and decided to stop and take a break to gather some water and to catch our breath for a while. I collected some water in my palms of my hands and drank some water before I filled my water pouch with more water and walking back to the others. We once again kept moving, walking until we slowly started to see the trees spread out more and more. This was a sign that we were getting close to the other side of the woods and where we planned on hunting for game.
As we got closer and closer to the edge of the woods, we saw on the horizon, out in the swaying grasses and under the big, blue sky was the bison.
As I stared at the mighty animal, I could only think to myself, that this was finally it.
Time for my first hunt to begin.
