Chapter 4
The following morning, I woke early and had a light breakfast for the long trek ahead that I would be making with the hunting party that day. The sun was just peaking over the horizon by this time as I finished my breakfast. Then for one final time, I made sure I had everything I needed for the trip before leaving wigwam. Nek also wanted to make sure I needed as well by asking questions if I had everything I needed with a worried expression on her face. She sighs in relief as I reassured her that I was prepared and that little wolf would look after me on the journey and make sure that I would be okay. He always did. Nek puts her hand on my shoulder and gives a small smile to me before telling me to hurry along and join the others before I was left behind and stood there as I walked off to the hunting party, who were already waiting for me just outside the village.
They asked if I was all ready for the journey and I nodded my head yes before we started the long trek to the hunting spot where we're be hunting at. According to Little Wolf, it would take a few days before we finally got there so it might be a while before we were able to head home. Nek had told me of this before, telling me to always to be prepared in cooking food and preparing medicine for the men in case someone got hurt.
As we walked across the Great Plains, I looked back at the village behind us, getting a glimpse of it as we walked farther and farther away from it as it slowly started to look like a tiny ant on the ground. Smoke going up into the sky, making it look like a small cloud drifting in the wind. The village now looked like an island out on the sea, it's safe embrace got farther away. I turned back to look ahead of me, little wolf, now looking at me with a blank face said "Don't worry, little Feather. We'll see them again. I promise. Then you can tell everyone about the trip and how it went."
I just look down a little at my feet and replied in a whisper "of course."
We continued for some time, walking across the Great Plains, until we could see the tree line just a few feet away from us. Grass was weaving in and out from the trees and a few bushes peaked out from the shadows along some of the bottom of tree trunks. Some of the bushes had little flowers on them, getting ready to bloom, ready to welcome in the new season. Flowers also bordered some of the other trees. Some were white while others were yellow and purple. They were all so pretty that I just wanted to stand there and admire their beauty for hours. But I knew I couldn't, I had to keep up with everyone else or I would be left behind.
We walked some more before we decided to take a break and rest for a while and catch our breath. By then it was probably around mid morning or so and all around us were trees. There were rocks covered in moss and sunlight peeking through the treetops and beaming down on trees and wildlife down below. I could heard birds chirping in the trees while we sat and drank some water and ate some berries from the surrounding area. Little wolf checked up on me, to make sure I was okay and to tell him or one of the other men of something was wrong. I thanked him before we all decided that we would press on some more before the sun went down and had to make a fire for the evening.
We continued walking through the forest, walking over moss covered rocks and dirt pathways with bits of grass covering them. By the time, we made camp for the evening, we were pretty far in the woods and the sun was already starting to set in the sky. Bright orange and pink were starting to show in the sky. Light from the sun was peeking in through the tree trunks as little wolf and Ahote went to gather wood while I prepared the food and other material I needed to make the dinner over the fire. The remaining men were spreading out their sleeping skins for the night and talking amongst themselves as they did so.
After a while, little Wolf and Ahote came back with the fire wood and made the fire so I could start cooking the food right away. Once the food was made and the food was served to the men, I poured myself a bowl and started eating. Everyone was talking while eating, sharing stories and laughing. They even shared a few with me and even teased little wolf about his first hunting trip. Little wolf embarrassed told them to stop and that I shouldn't mind them. I chuckled and said "I don't mind. I am having fun and learning so much already."
There was a little moment of silence and then a couple of the others smiled and chuckled before they resumed talking. That night after dinner after everything was cleaned and put away for the night, everyone felt it was best that we go to sleep early since we needed an early start tomorrow morning. I feel the last bit of warmth of the fire on my face as I was laying there in my sleeping skins. The coals burned bright with the last few sparks of the fire as everyone slept in a circle around the fire. I listened to the sounds of the forest as I tried falling asleep myself but it was difficult and I just tossed and turned myself the other way facing the darkness. The darkness to me was a dark and vast unknown world filled with secrets and animals that I had no way of knowing of unless I ventured out there myself. But I was safe close to the fire and with people who were so familiar to me that I could know that it was them even if I was hundreds of miles away.
I thought of everything that happened today, as I was doing so, I soon found myself drifting off and drifting into a deep sleep, dreaming of home and everything that I would tell Nek when we got back.
