Chapter 14

Some time after I had jumped into the river, I woke up somewhere downstream on a rocky beach still surrounded by trees on the other side of the river. My head felt dizzy and I took a moment to gather myself before I looked around at where I was. Still sitting on the shore, I looked to see if some of my stuff had landed on the shore as well in hopes, I would still have a few things to help me survive in whatever place the water carried me to after I escaped the mountain lion. I looked to my right and found some of my supplies scattered around a few feet away from me next to an old tree log that was covered in moss and mushrooms. I got up from where I sat and began walking over there, my clothes soaked from the water. I shivered a bit as I walked, and I could feel myself shaking a bit as I did so. Once over there, I checked to see what I had left and I needed to replace before I found some dry wood just a ways away behind the old log and made a fire. I then had to take my clothes off, leaving me completely naked as I dried them off out in the sun near the fire. My other clothes were unfortunately washed away downstream with some other items that also fell into the water.

I gathered up my stuff as my clothes dried before I sat down in front of the fire to warm up. Some time passed and I was starting to get hungry and a bit thirsty. The water wasn't a problem since I was near the river still but the food was an another problem I needed to solve since the food I did have washed away when I jumped in the river earlier. Once I drank some water from the river and my clothes were dry enough to wear again, I then gathered my remaining supplies and started looking for more food. As I walked through brushes and trees, I looked for any signs of some berries bushes that I could maybe pick and eat from. After a while, I found some strawberry bushes nearby and picked a few to eat until I was full and then took some more and packed them away for later when I got hungry again. I decided to drink some more water again at the river before heading back into the woods and continued walking, this time being more aware of my surroundings and making sure that another mountain lion didn't try and attack me again. As I walked, I could hear birds chirping and the sound of woodpeckers pecking in the distance. The forest was alive with the sounds of animals and covered in a thick layer of moss and vines as I got deeper and deeper into it. After a while, I took a break and ate a few berries and drank some water from a small pond nearby before continuing on. Days passed by as I journeyed through the woods before I arrived at the other side and once again, found myself on the Great Plains. Ahead of me, was just miles and miles of prairie grass and the blue sky above me. Grass swayed in the wind as I started to walk out towards the big open fields ahead. I could see bugs jumping along the ground and maybe a rabbit or two out in the distance running down into their homes in the ground to hide. On occasion, I would see a hawk or two flying overhead as I waded my way through the tall grass, sun beating down on me as I did so. After some time, I got hungry and decided to take a break for a while under a lone tree standing out in the middle of the prairie and ate some meat I had saved from hunting a small rabbit a few days ago before I continued on after taking a drink of water from the new water pouch I had made from the rabbit skin I had saved as well. The grass continued to sway in the wind as I walked through the Great Plains, still unsure of where I was going or where I wanted to go to. More days passed and I managed to catch a rabbit or two and a couple of prairie gophers for food and found a small pond or two for water.

As I was walking around, I heard a loud noise coming towards me from a distance away. I stopped and listened carefully to what it was and it sounded like the sound of hoofs and based on the sound, there was a lot. I then looked in the direction the sound was coming from and from the distance, I could see horses running over a small hill. They were all different colors ranging from white to even a light grey color. As they approached, they saw me and quickly started running in another direction, too scared to want and get near me. I just stood there completely still as I watched the horses raced past me, in awe of their beauty. Their manes flew in the wind and their eyes shined as they ran. They looked so happy and free and not have a care in the world nor for the people that lived there in that moment. Each gallop made the ground roar with thunder as they continued running past until they were out of sight and the sound quickly stopped just as quickly as it had begun. Dirt was settling from where they had been and had kicked it up before it cleared away and once again, I was alone with no animal in sight. Day soon turned into twilight and I decided to set up camp for tonight. As I was cooking dinner, I could see stars starting to come out. They lit up the night sky shining brightly. Fireflies occasionally flew around in the grass and I could hear frogs and crickets once again chirping in the grass. The grass continued to sway in the wind and I could feel how cold it was as it brushed against my cheek. Smoke from my fire rose high as the fire flickered and danced in the fire pit I made in the dirt.

Night had completely fallen upon the Great Plains as I finished dinner and covered myself with a new sleeping fur blanket next to the fire, that I had made when I wasn't traveling or hunting so I had something to sleep on at night. As I was falling asleep, I heard the sounds of the plains and saw the sight of the stars as they shined like fireflies as they continued to dance in the sky like a dream that was never ending.
