Chapter one

Guys,

Sky's P.O.V

I didn't chose this life. But I know if I had another choice. I would have taken it.
I didn't want to get beat every day.
Thrown everyday.
Punched everyday.
But I did.
I did get, smacked.
Spanked.
Starved.
Having been left outside for a month and a half.
Because I forgot one thing.
Did something wrong.
Missed curfew by a few seconds.
But those seconds, could have led to years.
Which they did.
They led to years.
First 1.
Then 3.
Then 5.
Then 8.
Then 12.
Then 15.
Now, 17.
I was 17 years old.
Blue, my brother, and I have been planning this our whole lives. We'd sneak out on our birthday.
June, 24. I was giddy. Because today, was June 22. I wanted to leave this death hole. The burning pit. The starvation world. I wanted to live how I wanted. Well fed. Smart and loyal.
Not dumb and untrustworthy.
"Sky." I heard him whisper. I turned around. My desk a mess of drawings.
      "Yes Blue?" I asked.
"It's almost curfew." He whispered throwing his shorts on.
"Oh crud!" I jumped up and went behind my little corner.
Stripping down to just underwear and a t-shirt. I turned around remembering that I forgot my shorts.
"Blue!" I hissed. "Blue?"
"Yea?" He asked. I heard shuffling and a shadow crossed in front of me.
"I forgot my shorts." I whispered. I heard shuffling and a cabinet opening and closing.
He curled his arm around the corner and he held my navy blue shorts.
I grabbed them quickly. If my father caught Blue and I this close, we'd get punched.
I gripped them tightly and slid them on as if they were burning. Quick and silent.
I rushed over to my bed. I slid down into them. My covers, purple and blue, didn't fit me. My feet stuck out at the end. But I wasn't going to say anything.                I turned to face Blue's bed. He blinked back. He wasn't wearing his hoodie now. But I felt like he was. As if he was always engulfing himself in his own shell.
"Turn the light off." I whispered. He leaned over and clicked the light off.
The darkness engulfed us.

I heard footsteps. Dads home. Tears poked at my eyes. I sniffled. I hope he doesn't beat us. I quickly wiped my eyes and the hallway light turned on.
I rolled to my other side, Blue and I can not look at one one another.

Blue's P.O.V

The man better not hurt my little sister. I swear if he breaks, I will too.
The door creaks open. A huff, and the door closes.
I exhale. Closing my eyes I act as if I have my hood on. No one can hurt me. I curl in my ball. Little do you know, I need a little more time.

The door opened again. Mom. I just tiny bit peeked my head over. My mom was staring at Sky. Pain filling her face.
I went back down right before she looked at me.
My poor mom. She has to go through all of this. The beating of her children. The yelling and the slapping. The pain.
The never ending pain.

She closed the door and left. I let out another sigh.

I awoke with yelling. But not at me. At my mother. It was outside. My father rarely yelled at my mom. She must have done something real bad.
My bare feet were still curled against me. I stretched outwards and twisted.
"Blue no!" Sky whispered. I turned to her.
"Why not?" I asked.
"He'll beat you!" She said.
It went silent. There was no more yelling.
It was like this for about a minuet. Then I heard a bang and then a yell.
"Kids come out here!" The man yelled. I let my feet touch the wood. A splinter wriggled it's way into my heel making me wince.
"Hurry up!" He scowled. I opened the door. My hair a mess. I kept Sky behind me, always.
"Yes father?" I asked quietly.
He pulled out his hand to reveal a pistol. He's only used it once. To kill a hound that was attacking Sky.
"Watch." He said. He grabbed the pistol with both hands, and turned it to my mother. "This is what happens. When you're bad."

Everything went so fast. The gun trigger. The bang. The scream. I don't know if it was from me, or Sky. At first I was in shock. Then I came to my senses. He shot her. He shot my mother. Her body lay motionless on the floor. The blood oozed from the wound in her skull. It bled out around her.
"What happens. When you do a very bad thing." He said. He threw the gun down and turned to us.
I wasn't sure. Did we do something bad? Or did my mother and he was making a point?
"Copy?" He asked. I shook my head quickly. He started walking towards us.
He gripped my shoulder in a swift motion.
"Go. To your. Room." He growled. I nodded and motioned for Sky to go first. That was the first time I let her go before me. She hurried into the room. I followed.

Sitting down on my bed he came in the doorway. He was tall. Very. He loomed over us.
"Your never coming out." Were his last words before he slammed the door shut.
That's what he thinks.
There's a window in our room.
I turned to Sky. Her emotionless eyes stared back.

"We need to get out of here." She said. I nodded. I jumped up and rushed to our closet. I grabbed our backpacks. I handed one to her.
I turned back to the closet and stared. My diamond sword and iron armor stood. I'd take the sword. Sky would have the armor. I took it out and handed it to her. She put it on.
I grabbed my sword and placed it gently in my backpack.
I closed it.
Opening my chest I grabbed a pickaxe, steak and a clock. Then a compass, shoes and four pairs of thick socks.

I hurried over to the window. We were ready to leave. We were outside of a village. We just needed to get in, get out.
I opened up the window quickly motioning for Sky to go. She nodded and threw her backpack on.
I helped her up. She let her feet out first. She sat on the sill and hesitated.
"Come on. I'm right behind you." I whispered. She nodded and threw herself out with a thud.
"Shh." I whispered. She said sorry and it was my turn.
I kicked my feet out. Throwing them over I readied myself.

Sky's P.O.V

Blue was right there. When my father came in.
"Hey!" He shouted and pointed. Blue freaked out and jumped down. He landed hard.
My father went back in the other room.
"Let's go!! Go!!" I yelled. He stood up stumbling. We turned and started running. I heard a door slam but I didn't look back.
I heard a click.
No turn.
The armor was heavy on me. Slowing me down some.
I heard a gun shot. Didn't turn back.
Another.
He caught Blue in the shoulder. Blue winced and paused.
"KEEP GOING!" I shouted. He was ahead of me by a few feet. He turned back and fear was all I could see in his blue eyes,"It's okay!" I shouted. He turned and sorda ran. The wound slowed him down.
Another gun shot. The whizz sound. I was almost hit. I heard shouts, after shouts, after shouts.
But as I gained distance between the house, it quieted.
Blue stopped in front of me.
He turned around panting,"I think we lost him."
I nodded,"But let's keep going, we don't have to run."
He nodded and and stood up a bit.
I brought my bag around and opened it. I had packed a healing potion while Blue wasn't looking.
Also a few of my drawings.
"Here." I handed him the bottle. He turned and asked me to apply pressure so he'd know where it was. I followed his order and put pressure by the wound. He winced but told me to keep it on.
The bottle 'popped' and Blue applied the liquid. He sighed and the wound slowly closed.
"Thank you." He said handing back now the 3/4 full bottle. I had two more though so I wasn't worried.

We had to get away from here.
Quick too.
