Chapter Five
The diner was mostly quiet. Larry made multiple attempts to lighten the mood but none of them worked. Evan would always smile shyly, let out a small chuckle if it was a funny remark.
"Would anyone like more chicken?"Larry tried again, making Evan mentally cringe.
"I think you're the only one with an appetite Larry." Cynthia finally replied, bringing a glass of water to the table."Did Connor ever tell you about the Heeres?" She continued, looking straight at Evan. Evan remembered Connor talking about someone named Jeremy Heere. He nodded frantically."Oh, and how our family's used to go skiing together." The mother stared off into space, her eyes starting to pool.
"C-Connor loved skiing." Evan dazed off, nodding again.
"Connor hated skiing." Zoey said sharply.
"You're right, you're right that's what I meant." He tried not to bite his fingernails."Connor loved-how talking about how much he hated skiing." He smiled slightly, remembering their long rants in the forest.
Cynthia brightened." You guys-You guys hung out a lot?"
"P-Pretty much yes..."
"Where?" Zoey snapped.
"Well uh, mostly we would hang out at-at my house but sometimes we would go to his house but only if no body was there." Evan cursed at himself for ranting.
"Okay, the weird thing is the only time I ever saw you and my brother is when he pushed you in the hallway." Zoey was now making Evan feel very uncomfortable.
"Oh yeah-Yes well you see I tripped."
"You didn't trip!" Zoey was now on the edge of her seat." I saw him push you-I was there I saw the whole thing!"
"He pushed you?" Cynthia sounded mortified.
"Oh yeah,Oh yeah now I remember see it was a misunderstanding," Evan felt his eyes pool."Because-Because Connor didn't want us to talk in public and I had tried to well talk to him and it wasn't a big thing it was my fault, my fault." He repeated the last part half to himself, remembering that Connor was now dead.
"Why didn't he want you to talk to him at school?" Zoey's voice held a laugh.
"Well I guess he didn't want people to know. I guess he was a little embarrassed-"
"Why would he be embarrassed?" Cynthia held a smile on her lips.
"Well I guess he thought I was sort of...y-you know..."
"A nerd?"
"Zoey!"
"I-I was gonna say loser but nerd works to!"
"That wasn't very nice." Cynthia's voice held a harsher tone but was still loving like a mother's.
"Well Connor wasn't very nice so that makes sense." The teen snapped back.
"Connor was...Connor was a complicated person." Cynthia crossed her arms as she tried not to cry in front of her guest. Evan looked at the two with frightened eyes.
"No, Connor was a bad person, there's a differen-"
"Zoey,please."Larry cut her off.
"Don't pretend like you don't agree with me."
"You refuse to see any of the good things-"
"There were no good things! What were good things?" Zoey raised her voice against her mother's.
"I don't want to have this conversation in front of our guest!" Cynthia walked away to hid her tears.
"What were the good things mom?" Zoey still shouted at her mother.
"I remember a lot of good things about Connor." Evan tried not to cry.
"What?" Both of them turned around to look at him.
"I-I'm sorry I sh-shouldn't have-"
"No! No,No,No. I would like to hear, I'm sure we would all love to hear what you would like to say." Cynthia's voice was loving and encouraging.
(Whoooh filler. I kinda just copied the dialogue from the musical and cut out the part about emails. Sorry Jared! You and Evan will get close! But in another way.)
