Chapter two

Inexplicable wind rushed across Wulf's paw pads as he powered through the Ghost Zone. He looked back briefly to see a number of floating purple doors, green swirly skies, and Clockwork's looming tower getting farther and farther away as Wulf gathered speed. He was going to the house of Jack and Maddie Fenton, parents of Daniel and Jasmine Fenton. Due to this location inhabiting the human world, Wulf had to be going pretty fast in order for his powers to work.

His powers, of course, being that he could create portals that led to pretty much anywhere.

Wulf knew that, in time, he would be able to just swipe the air with his great claws and create a portal right there instead of having to gather so much speed like he was now. But for now, he settled on flying even faster (the Ghost Zone had very little ground) and preparing his claws for tearing a hole in reality.

Wulf kept going, idly wondering what Clockwork saw in this random child he had just happened to come across in his mirrors one day. Sure, the child was the offspring of ghost hunters, and Clockwork had always been liked irony, (It was one of the few things that amused him nowadays) but there had to be more to it.

Wulf shook his head. He had to concentrate. He waited until he could hear the impossible wind of the Ghost Zone start to whistle through his fur from the sheer speed he was traveling at. When he did hear it, his ears perked up under his hood, he raised his large, furry arm and

Danny sat on the carpeted floor of his room, playing with the few toys he owned. A toy rocketship was cradled in his hands, and an astronaut to go with it. A small moon buggy squatted at his side, a little dented, with the paint peeling from age.

He had spent his birthday alone again, but he didn't mind. At least, that was what he kept telling himself. He didn't want to cry again. He set his toys down, a little bored. He distractedly opened and closed the birthday card Jazz had sent him from her boarding school. It had a five dollar bill and a little apology note telling Danny she was sorry she couldn't be there today and wishing him a happy birthday.

He had been more excited about the card than the money. It had a big sparkly '7' on it, with the five dollar bill crumpled inside. Maybe he could walk to the candy shop and buy some sweets later. Amity Park wasn't that big. He wouldn't get lost.

Danny opened the card again, and the little music box inside jingled a song that sounded like the birthday song, but more catchy. He closed it, interrupting the song for the fortieth time that day, and sighed, leaning a tiny cheek on an undersized fist.

Danny had always been exceptionally small for his age.

He was also bored.

Danny then perked up, remembering that his parents were at some scientists' convention trying to convince everyone there that they weren't wackjobs, and that meant that the lab was empty.

The lab was empty.

Where had that thought come from? Why did he care? He was always to scared to go in the lab. He was terrified of the big metal door that led into it.

But I'm seven now, He thought stubbornly. I shouldn't be scared of things like that. Plus, I'm still super bored.

And with that, Danny decided to finally step foot in the mysterious ghost lab that had stolen his parents away from him. A bit of a spur-of-the-moment desicion, but Danny was getting restless from the loneliness, and didn't want to start being sad again. He needed this distraction.

Plus, he had literally never gone in there. He was beyond curious.

So, down to the kitchen he went. He trudged into the hall and descended the stairs that led to the lab, each step creaking eerily as he made his way down, grasping the rails for support. The creaking of the wooden steps had never seemed this scary to Danny before, but this time, he was alone in the house.

He pressed a button to open the lab door.

It opened. And Danny stood there. Oh man, he couldn't make himself move. And the door was on a timer, too, which only made him hesitate for longer and longer until the door slammed shut loudly, making him flinch.

It took a couple more tries for Danny to finally scurry in after he pressed the button, heart racing wildly as he hurried into the lab.

As soon as he made it in, he felt his mouth fall open at everything he saw. His eyes drunk it all in, the futuristic walls and tables and machinery, the cylindrical containers swirling with glowing green ectoplasm sitting on shelves, and much more.

He ran over to one of the tables excitedly, running his small hands along scalpels and knives, glowing white rope and small beeping machines. This place is really cool, The boy thought.

Despite the slight grudge he had against the lab for obvious reasons, his childlike wonder smashed it for now, causing him to marvel at almost every detail.

A large, circular contraption about five times taller than him sitting in the back of the lab only caught his attention for a few seconds before he ran off again to look at new things.

It looked about half finished.

Wulf silently watched the little boy scramble about the lab in excitement, invisible in the corner. A smile made its way onto his fanged muzzle. Okay, this kid was pretty cute. But he had a haunted look behind his eyes and loneliness was etched onto his face, despite the curiosity borne from the lab.

Wulf wanted to wipe that loneliness away.

Damn, now he knew how even Clockwork got attached to this kid so easily.

Wulf was snapped out of his thoughts by a scream. He looked up sharply, only to see a large, beaten-up file cabinet about to fall upon a very stunned Danny Fenton.

Wulf leapt into action, releasing his body from invisibility. Not having enough time to stop the file cabinet itself, he simply sprinted across the room and snatched the child out of harm's way in his muscular, furry arms.

The dazed child was jostled violently as Wulf landed, despite his best efforts to soften the blow.

The child shook his head to get his bearings, and stared up at Wulf with wide eyes. He didn't scream, or flail, or try to squirm away like Wulf thought he would. Maybe he was in shock...?

"Thank you," the kid said, surprising the werewolf ghost so badly he almost dropped Danny, and opted to set him down gently instead.

Danny didn't run away. "Who are you?" he asked politely, but with a hint of wariness in his tone. Wulf, recovering, bent down to Danny's level, and smiled a toothy grin. "My name is Wulf," He replied in esperanto. What a strange but pleasant surprise. A human that didn't run away screaming bloody murder as soon as they saw him.

"I can't understand you..." Danny said. Wulf nodded his huge head in understanding. "That is okay, young one. Not many ca-" Wulf was cut off, green glowing eyes widening in surprise as he felt a tiny hand patting his nose. The hand only took up half his nose.

"Good doggy," Danny smiled, now rubbing his hand in circles on Wulf's nose. Wulf felt his insides warm at the sight. He liked this little human.

Wulf picked up Danny in his arms, careful not to crush the small being in his hold. Danny squealed in happiness as Wulf lifted him. He must be a dog person, Wulf thought, inwardly chuckling. He set Danny on his back, and felt his fur twisting in the grasp of the child's hands.

"Are you a ghost?" Danny asked him. Wulf twisted his head around and nodded at the boy. Danny smiled wider and giggled. "My parents would flip. If I told them, that is. Which I won't. They would do bad things to you, and you're a nice ghost."

Wulf gave a genuine smile in return. This kid was really something. Wulf wondered why the kid was so nonchalant about Wulf obviously about to take him somewhere. He had just met Wulf! Clockwork hadn't really given him many details on the boy...

Despite this, he made sure Danny was holding on tight, and Wulf turned both he and the kid invisible and intangible.

He leaped through the walls of the lab, hearing Danny gasping in awe above him.

And with that, Wulf started to run, getting his claws ready...
