I, Misaki Takahashi had never thought in my 22 years of living that I'd be taking care of a child of my own. It's quite surreal after all I'm only a university student after all. It's a story I remember like the back of my hand. Let me tell you about the story of Amehiko.

****

I was walking home from school, this being one of the rare times Akihiko didn't drive me home. My book bag on my shoulder and a grocery bag in my left hand. The sun was overshadowed by dark clouds signalling immanent rain. I'm lucky I have my umbrella with me. My eyes darted about looking at different shops and buildings in the area. As I was walking, I felt a drop of rain on my nose and before I knew it, it was pouring. Opening the umbrella in my hand, I continued with my walk home. Over the soft potter patter of the rain, I heard some sort of painful whimpering coming from an alleyway. It sounded like a wounded child and for some reason, my conscience wouldn't let me ignore it.

Walking to the alley way, there was a child with dirty brown hair with bangs covering his right eye. He wore a hoodie that was much bigger than he was that I couldn't see his hands. The boy's skin was pale like a ghost, yet he had a pair of striking violet eyes that reminded me of a man I know. "A-are you okay?" I asked with a slight hesitation to my voice. He looked up at me with a combination of fear and confusion. He just shook his head "no."

"What's wrong?" I knelt down to his size and the boy stood under my umbrella. "Mom...and Dad...they're gone."

'Did they die? Or did they just up and leave him? Either way they sound like horrible people.'

My question was answered like the boy was reading my mind. "Um...Mommy and Daddy said something about a...Or-fan-nidge?" The boy struggled with the pronunciation of the word and I corrected him. "Orphanage" the child nodded his head in sad affirmation. "It sounded scary so I...I just ran away! I didn't see them so I...I thought they just didn't care about me..." The boy shivered due to the cold and I felt my heartbreak hearing the boys story. The poor kid was left in the cold with nowhere to go. I put my umbrella on the ground and held my hand to him.

"Do you want to come home with me?" I asked him with a warm inviting smile. Amehiko had stared at me for what felt like an eternity before he hesitantly took my hand. The kid's hand felt as cold as ice and I thought he held an ice cube before I found him. I took the umbrella and put it over his head not caring if I came home soaked head to toe. The whole walk home the child clung to my leg with a tighter than average grip for a 6 year old.

During the walk, I just couldn't help but compare his situation to my own back in the day. After my parents died it broke not only me, but my dear older brother Takahiro. He did everything in his power to raise me to be happy and successful. He even went as far as to decline entry into Mitsuhashi university. He put my happiness as his first priority and to this day I couldn't thank him enough. When I looked at him with those glossy violet eyes, I saw my childhood self filled to the brim with childlike whimsy. My monologue was cut short with a tap on my leg.

"U-um...excuse me but.." he looked down at the concrete. "What's y-your name sir?" The formality caused me to frown. I know I'm merely a stranger to him but for some reason I felt my chest ache when he referred to me as 'sir' but nevertheless I responded. "I'm Takahashi Misaki. What about you?"

"U-uh...My name is Amehiko. M-mommy told me that Ame m-means rain." How ironic. The rain continues to pour down with no signs of stopping. My eyes glanced down at the soaked clothes on his back. Where am I going to get clothes for a 6 year old? Big brother was definitely out of the question and Akihiko was on a work related trip in Hokkaido. Wait Akihiko? Maybe Tanaka! I'll wash Amehiko then I'll try to contact him. Yes I'm using Akihiko's childhood clothing, well until I can purchase some clothes for him. "We're almost here. Are you doing okay?" He yawned adorably before he nodded in agreement.

After another half an hour of walking we finally reached the luxury penthouse me and Akihiko reside in. "Make yourself at home. I'll make you some tea." I grabbed the tea kettle. "How about you sit with Suzuki-san." He rubbed his small adorable eyes before taking a seat on the light pink sofa hugging Suzuki-san his eyes drooping.

Amehiko POV

It's official. I've never seen a house of this size, it's almost like it came out of a fairytale! Just missing the sparkles and bright lights. My drooping eyes saw a large teddy bear with a fancy blue bowtie. It looked so soft, so cuddly I just want to hug it and take a small nap. Walking towards the sofa and the bear I rest my head on the soft plush my mind wandered to my 'hero.' This whole thing is probably the most surprising thing to have happened in my life. You see, my father died 2 weeks ago and my mother just...shut down for lack of a better term and wanted to send me to an..Or-fan-nidge and I just did the first thing I was thinking and just ran away. The next thing I knew M-misaki just took me into his care and made me some tea. But why? Couldn't he just ignore me and go back to his home? He did this all on his own free will and with no ulterior motives.

It really was surreal but I'm going to have to walk back home tomorrow morning as to make sure mommy doesn't worry about me. But for now...maybe I shouldn't plan out the next day when my eyes could barely focus. Using the teddy bear as a pillow and soon enough, I feel my consciousness slip away from me and I fall into a deep sleep.

Misaki's POV

Pouring hot tea into a small blue cup, I walked towards the sofa and was greeted with Amehiko in a peaceful slumber with Suzuki-san as a pillow. The sight warmed my heart to see him in such a state. Setting the cup down on the counter, I quickly and quietly rushed upstairs to my bedroom. I grabbed 2 white blankets and went back downstairs to the living room. "Goodnight." I whispered softly in his ear before tucking him in. Walking towards the phone I called the butler Tanaka.

"H-hello this is Takahashi Misaki. I'm sorry if I'm bothering you but do you have any of Akihiko's childhood clothing?" God that sounded way better in my head than outloud.

"Let me see." It went silent for 10 minutes before responding with "Yes they are still here. And if I may ask, why do you need these clothes?"

"U-um you see it's quite complicated. I'm just taking care of him until I can find his parents."

"I see" He responded. He didn't seem to judge me too much. "Well then I will bring them over to you as soon as possible."

"Ah yes thank you so much for this. I appreciate it. Okay, goodbye." I hung my phone on the cradle. Taking the cup, I knelt down looking at the sleeping child in front of me. "Ame I have tea. Please wake up." I stroke his dirty brown hair and I see his left eye slowly open before closing once more. Maybe I should let him have the sleep he needs. I was cleaning up the kitchen counter when I heard the doorbell ring. "I'm coming!" I run to towards the door and the intercom informs me that it's Tanaka. "Takahashi-sama. I am here with the clothes you wanted." I smile and open the door to let him in. He hands me a small brown bag with a different assortment of clothing just perfect for a 6 year old.

"Thank you once again." I bow and I saunter towards the sofa. My heart melted at the sight of the peaceful child in front of me, I almost don't want to wake him up but I need to clean him. Rubbing his head, my fingers running through his dirty brown hair I see his left eye slowly open before both his eyes open. "...Misaki?" He mumbled.

"I have some clothes for you to wear. But for now how about you take a bath."

"Suzuki.." He muttered out holding it closer. "You'll come back to him after your bath. Okay?" Removing the blankets off of him they fall to the floor. I take ahold of his small hand along with the bag of clothing and lead him up the stairs and to the spacious bathroom. Turning on the hot water, he put a finger in the tub and immediately turned on the cold water to balance it out. Once he got the water to the optimum temperature he turned off the water and opened a drawer and got out a rubber duck. Placing the duck into the tub Ame looked at the duck with an amused glint in his eyes.

"Here I'm going to wait outside. I got some ducks for you to play with alright?" I walk out the bathroom door shutting the door behind me. I silently thank Papa usagi for the ducks I knew these ducks would come in handy someday.

'Ame kept talking about Suzuki-san. It seems he didn't want to leave him.'

A certain rabbit popped into my mind and I make a beeline to his toy filled bedroom. An assortment of bears of all sizes and a model of a train going around the tracks filled the spacious room. Turning on the light my eyes dart towards the pile of bears. "Too big" I put it towards the side. He picked up another bear, its violet bow tie complemented Amehiko's eyes and its fur complimented Ame's soft brown hair. It's just right! Bear in hand, I grabbed a white towel and I made my way to the bathroom to get splashed in the face with a rubber duck ! "Ahh!" I dropped the bear and dry off my cheek before I heard a cute giggle and a "Got you!"

"Okay okay you got me-" I got sprayed once again but this time it was square in my right eye. My face twists as I feel the water in my eye and Ame jumps up and spews hundreds of apologies. "Don't worry I'm okay. You having fun?" He nodded his head with a grin and I honestly thought my heart stop the moment I saw that full toothed grin. "Well let's get you out of there and into some comfortable clothing." I gave him the towel along with the bag of clothing telling him what's in it. I heard the door open and I quickly ran out of the bathroom to see the violet eyes and white hair of Akihiko. Wait what's he doing here?! He isn't supposed to come home until tomorrow! "H-hey Usagi-san. Aren't you supposed to be home till tomorrow?" I ask while picking up the blankets that were on the floor.

"The meeting for my latest novel ended early." He stalked towards me hugging me from behind. My face turned red as my attempts of pushing him away were in vain. "H-hey let go! C'mon"

"Please be quiet while I recharge" I felt warm kisses down my neck, squirming with each kiss on my skin. My neck felt like it was on fire but his cool hand went under my shirt. "Ah..! S-stop.." I finally pushed him away. After my composure came back to me, He suddenly asked me. "Were you sleeping on the sofa Misaki?" I felt myself flinch. "N- I mean y-yes! Yes I did I felt really drowsy and decided to take a small nap." Thank god he believed me.

Gathering the blankets, I rushed up the stairs and to the bathroom to see that Ame was gone. Paranoia flowed through my veins and I checked every room upstairs Usagi's room being the last room to be checked. Slowly opening the door as to not scare the boy and sadly he wasn't there.

"Misaki what are you doing?" He asked me grabbing my hand and led me to his bedroom. Flicking the light switch on my blood ran cold seeing a small bump on the bed covered by a lot of blankets. In that exact moment I repeated 'please don't let it be Ame please don't let it be Ame' It was like a mantra but unfortunately it didn't work. He removed the blankets off the bed and there he was. Hugging the bear I gave him along with the clothes I gave him. He looked up at the child with a blank stare and then he looked up at me. "...I-I can explain all of this! I know this looks weird but I can explain." I quickly shut my mouth when he turned to the side. "We'll talk some more in the living room." Once we were out, I slowly close the door so he doesn't wake up.

Lighting a cigarette and putting it to his lips we walked down the stairs with me and we took a seat on the sofa on opposite ends. Taking an inhale, I start the story. "Well, I was walking home from school like normal right? Well on the way home I saw him in the alley way sobbing and scared. He told me he was going to be sent to an orphanage and he ran away. Well long story short, I'm going to take care of him until I can get the whole story and find his parents." I think I can do it but I can tell he won't accept this. "You're too young plus you have school and work. How do you plan on balancing all of those things?" He asked me. I took a few minutes to construct my answer.

"I'm...I'm still making up a plan but I can guarantee it will work."

"But you're too young it isn't going to work." He insisted. After that sentence, Ame lazily walked down the stairs. "Hey did you sleep well?" I asked. He nodded in affirmation and took a seat beside me. "T-thank you for taking care of me. I'll be home by tomorrow don't worry." He clings to my arm and I see some fear in his eyes when he saw Usagi with a jealous aura which caused Ame to hide his face in a couch cushion. "Ame you don't have to be scared. You don't know where your parents are."

"I can find my way home. I'm a big boy!" He pouts.

"Wait happened to your parents?" "Well... daddy died but I don't know how it happened and my mommy just." He takes a breath. "She...stopped being herself." His voice held sadness. "I want to help mommy but I don't know how. She says she can't live or she can't take this anyone. It hurts me Misaki. It hurts right here." He pointed to his heart." I held his hands. "We'll help you okay? You're going to be okay. I promise." I held out my pinky signaling a promise. "...You know that you don't have to right?"

"I know but I want to help you. So.." Again I held out my pinky. He shakingly wrapped his pinky around my own. I can say for sure that this is the start of something new. If I'm just acting with my emotions or it's the right thing to do I don't know but all I know is that he needs help and that's what I'm here to do.
