Gone
"Say it again!" she screamed, every part of her trembling with rage. "Say it again, I dare you!"
His face twisted as the words poured out against his will. "I killed her."
Her voice dissolved into sobs, tears streaming down her face as she struggled to hold the gun in her hands. If her mind had been less chaotic, she would've shot him right then and there. As it was, the barrel of the gun was waving every which way, his green eyes tracking its every movement.
She hated him. She hated him with everything she had, every bit of her heart that wasn't broken to dust. She hated the way her body shook, her sobs coming as every single sign of weakness she'd ever tried to hide. She hated the way the gun lowered and his raised hands relaxed, her arms too exhausted to threaten him anymore.
He'd taken her. He'd taken her love, and she would never get her back.
And now, when she had nothing left, she couldn't even shoot the man who'd murdered her.
"Selene," she whispered, falling to her knees as her tears dripped in waterfalls off her chin. "Selene, I'm sorry."
His voice was gentle, pleading. "Abiline..."
Rage flared faster than she could recognize it. In a flash, her hand was on the trigger, the gun raised.
There was a deafening bang and a cry of pain. He stumbled back, pain contorting the shock on his face. His fingers pressed into his flesh in a desperate attempt to stem the blood from his shoulder.
"GO!" she screamed, her voice raw and breaking, tears pouring fresh and new. "LEAVE!"
He ran. She didn't notice his footsteps receding, the silence of the alley, nothing above the strangled sobs racking her chest.
She was gone. Her dear Selene was gone. And though she could dream, she knew--she was never coming back.
