Ocean - Part Two

Who Hung the Moon - Jamestown Revival

It was here. The day had come. Finally, she sat on a place other than her lonely roof. Finally, the roar of the ocean filled the silence and a cool breeze carried the sent of salt. Clouds hung over her head, blocking out the black sky that was trying to break through. The wind was cold and soft, nothing like how it raged in her little valley.

She breathed it in, smelling the cool air and listening to the rocking waves. The whole world seemed gray and cold, the small amount of warmth squeezed out and thrown around by the gray water, beaten against the rocks and dragged back as the waves retreated. Fog had been thrown over the grass and trees. It was thick, so thick that when it had completely settled, you could feel the wet drops on your face. It was like a blanket, and this foggy blanket covered the tops of the evergreen trees, leaving them submerged in the gray haze. The fog reached its arms around the coastal shore and squeezed it tight, bathing the ocean and beach in its cold embrace.

The girl was facing west, towards the water. Her feet were in the cold sand and her arms were hugging her knees close to her chest. Seagulls called in the distance, though their cry was drowned out by the roar of the ocean. The girl calmly kept her gaze on the water. She was lost in it's repeated motion. The waves went back and forth, pulled by the moon that hung over the water and was faintly glowing though the fog.

It was a crescent on this night. Glowing orange through the heavy fog, perhaps it was the only warmth that was left on this beach. The girl knew the stars were bright and shining above the fog. She knew that shooting stars streaked through the night sky and under the milky way. Part of her wanted to see them, but part of her was satisfied by the clouded world. The dark, foggy ocean was all she needed in the moment. Just for now, she was happy. Yes, she'd have to leave in a few short days and not return for a whole year, but for now, she was here. She was sitting in the cold sand surrounded by the thick fog with the orange moon hanging over the gray waves. She sat there for hours. If only she could stay there longer.
