Introducing The Future
A/N: Welcome to the sequel to Just A Little Glorybringer For Ya! This chapter basically introduces you to all the new characters in this book and who they are. Please keep in mind that Mudwings usually have a lot of dragonets, like Cattail had at least 7, for instance, so it's really not that many if you consider the tribe. But that doesn't make any sense right now, so LET THE SEQUEL BEGIN!!!
Up in the mountains of the Sky Kingdom, there was a cave, just at the bottom of one of the mountains. In this cave, lived a small family. Two parents, and their dragonet. But tonight, this very minute, another dragonet was about to hatch.
Nightflyer paced nervously, his eyebrows furrowed. All those years, and not one of his visions had ever mentioned this. This seemed like something worth noting, if you asked him. Air quickly rushed out of the cave they called home, her eyes flicking over to the reason for their hidden panic. A small black and red egg sat on the ground, a thick crack running through it. This didn't seem like something worth fearing over, except that this egg wasn't supposed to hatch today. It wasn't supposed to hatch for another two weeks. Air wrung her talons as she eyed the egg. "I finally got Ember to sleep," she commented, referring to their three-year old son. Nightflyer nodded. "Good. It wouldn't be good if he was here and..." he trailed off, unable to finish the sentence. Air nodded. They both knew it, but the words lay unspoken. If the dragonet inside the unhatched egg lives. Neither of them had heard of a dragonet hatching two weeks early and living. Rainkeeper and Pear's first child hatched a day early, and he died not three minutes later. Air was terrified. She didn't want to lose her dragonet. Nightflyer wasn't as worried, but he still was. He knew that the dragonet inside this egg was a girl, the tiny dragonet from his visions, the one that had haunted him since he was four. He had denied the vision for years, but after Ember hatched he knew it was true. His dragonets would be in danger someday. And he had no idea how to help them. Air gasped slightly and grabbed his arm as another crack appeared in the egg. They stared at it as it rocked slightly before opening. A teeny-tiny black dragonet crawled out with a squeak. Her eyes were wide as she took everything in. "Oh," Air breathed, a smile slowly creeping onto her face. Nightflyer grinned. The small dragonet was tiny and terrified, but he knew that she would live. Air bent down and scooped her up, the dragonet squeaking happily. "What should we call her?" Air asked. She had named Ember, so it was only fair that Nightflyer got to name the small hybrid in Air's arms. Nightflyer grinned as a name came to him. He offered one of his talons to the girl and she grabbed on eagerly. "What about Hopeseeker?" he suggested. Air smiled. "Little Hopeseeker." she repeated, kissing the dragonet's forehead. "Perfect."
In the Rainforest, home to the Nightwings and Rainwings, a hybrid and a Seawing walked together, one of them anxious, the other one angry, and yet, both of them feared slightly for the same dragonets.
"This is absolutely ridiculous." Joy announced. Kelp sighed. "I know, but it has to be done." he insisted. Red poured into Joy's scales. "Why does Coral even care about our dragonets? It's not like she cares about you." she questioned. "Apparently it has finally occurred to Queen Coral that since Tsunami is my mother, I have royal, animus holding blood, which means that one of our dragonets could potentially be an animus." Kelp explained. Joy growled. "So she's coming here just to see if she can manipulate and use our children. Wonderful. And of course it doesn't matter that the dragonets are also part Rainwing and part Nightwing too. Is she testing Seashell's daughter as well, or just us?" she demanded. "Hey, I'm just as upset about this as you are," Kelp insisted. "I don't want her anywhere near them, especially Meander. But we can't exactly say no to the queen of the Seawings, now can we." he reasoned. "No," Joy admitted with a sigh. "But we can say no to the queen of the rainwings."
A few days later, Glory, Deathbringer, Joy, Kelp, and three dragonets met in the pavilion with Queen Coral. The Seawing queen appeared sincere as the dragonets were introduced.
"This is Shore," Kelp began, one talon resting on the back of a dark blue dragonet with silver-blue eyes. "He's three." "Hello," Shore greeted tentatively, while eyeing the queen. He didn't trust her, or like her at all. He especially didn't like the way she was eyeing him and his sisters. He wound his tail protectively over his siblings entwined tails. "And this is Mandarin and Meander. They're two." Joy explained, staying close to her daughters.
"Hi." one of them greeted, stepping forward slightly. "I'm Mandarin, but everybody calls me Rin." Rin was a small dragonet with a rainwing's scales. A sky blue color lined her wings and she stared nervously with her blue eyes. She was normally a confident dragon, but the queen made her nervous.
On the other talon, was Meander. Meander was a quiet, shy dragonet, but she was oddly confident with strangers. And this was no exception. "Salutations," Meander greeted her. Joy and Kelp cringed slightly. They didn't expect anything different than Ander's normal self, but part of them had hoped she would've kept quiet around Coral. Meander stepped forward. She was a small dragonet, resembling a Seawing, but with a star pattern instead of light up stripes. She had odd silver eyes with blue spots that almost looked like stars. She walked in a zig-zagged line over to Coral and studied her closer before turning her head, like she was listening to something. After a moment, she went back to normal and scowled at Coral. "My name is Meander. My family calls me Ander, but you do not get that privilege. The stars say that you are a greedy twat, like most Seawing queens, and you claim to be caring and loving, when in reality, you don't even know your sons names, you willing sacrifice you daughter's soul, and you have completely disowned another daughter simply for falling in love. You don't care about a single dragon in this room unless they possess the power you are searching for, when if you looked under your own over-sized snout once in a while, you'd find it. To me you are nothing more than a manipulative waste of oxygen and the stars agree wholeheartedly. If you are not worth their time, then you are certainly not worth any of ours. Please do us all a favor and exit the premises in a calm and orderly fashion." Coral stared at her. "What?" she questioned. Meander sighed. "Quid nobis et tibi, te intolerabilis egomaniac," she repeated. "Do you capiunt?" Coral opened her mouth to speak, but Rin and Shore quickly pulled their sister away before she could make Coral even more angry.
Down in the Sandwing Kingdom, in the city of Possibility, a group of dragonets played in a river while their mothers combed the riverside for shells. But it was hard to focus with seven energetic dragonets running around.
"Nile, make sure they aren't playing too rough with Egret, you know he's little!" Adobe called. Firefly grinned as she cleaned off another shell before tucking it into a bag. While Squelch and Coal worked out of town, her and Adobe ran a small stand, selling jewelry they made from the shells. They collected the shells on weekends, letting their dragonets run wild in the river. But it was easier for Firefly. She only had two dragonets, whereas Adobe had to handle five. But, then again, Mudwings were known for letting their dragonets take care of each other. And they did. Nile, Squelch and Adobe's oldest son, took his job as Bigwings very seriously. He tried his best to keep track of his younger sister Cypress, his brother Gator, his other sister Willow, and the baby of the family, Egret. But sometimes the job was a bit too much for a two-year old to handle. Cypress and Gator were one, Willow was nearly a year, and Egret was only a few months old. Firefly had it much easier with her and Coal's dragonets. They were very well behaved until they got together with the others. Coal said they got their manners from Firefly, but their rebellious side from him. The dragonets in question were two-year old Dusk, who had black scales like a Nightwing, but each of his scales had a faint golden like color at the end. He also had the poisonous barb on the end of his tail. his sister, one-year old Dawn, was pretty much the opposite. She was a golden color like Coal, but with black lining the edges of her scales instead. She had silver eyes, but no tail barb. Dusk was quieter, taking after their mother, whereas Dawn was loud and energetic. She was fun like their father. As Firefly thought to herself she felt a warm dragon's talons wrap around her waist and grinned. "Hi Coal," she greeted him. "Shh," he warned. "If we don't talk, Dawn won't notice I'm here." A shriek went up over by the dragonets. "Too late," she replied with a smile. "Daddy!" Dawn yelled, running over to Coal. He scooped her up in his arms as Dusk came over. "You're home early!" the little dragonet exclaimed, her arms wrapped around Coal's neck. "Of course," he insisted. "I couldn't be late for someone's first birthday, now could I?"
In a hut in the rainforest, a small dragonet painted at a table, while noticing things.
This dragonet was called Apple. Her parents had named her this because they wanted a name that meant something to them, and they always remembered a sloth with anger management issues pelting them with a particular fruit. Thus, Apple was named. Apple, like her aunt Joy, noticed the little things that other dragons didn't. For instance, her parents. They would always, always, wash the dishes together. Every day, even if they were mad at each other. Apple liked her parents a lot. She was an only child, so she got a lot of their attention, but they weren't overprotective. They were nice and taught her to climb trees. Apple glanced down at her painting. It was supposed to be a picture of Tree-Bud throwing an apple, but it wasn't turning out very good in her opinion. The door to the hut opened suddenly and Rainkeeper stepped inside. "Daddy!" Apple cried, jumping up from the table to meet him. "Hi," he replied, picking her up easily. He grinned at the sight of the paint on her scales. "Painting again, I presume?" he guessed. "Yep!" Apple confirmed as Pear walked in. Her eyes widened at the sight of her daughter. "Apple! Did you get any paint on the canvas?" she asked. "Lots." Apple said in confusion. Where else would the paint go? Rainkeeper rounded the table and looked at her unfinished painting. He let out a laugh. "Somehow I don't think Tree-Bud would approve of you painting him with a smile on his face." he commented. "You knew what it was!" Apple beamed. "Of course baby." he retorted setting her down. "Unless it was supposed to be abstract." Pear shook her head. "Let's get you cleaned off before you become a painting yourself." she insisted, taking apple by the hand.
On an island in the bay of a Thousand scales, a Seawing raced around, searching for two dragons.
"Geyser!" Seashell exclaimed, rushing over to her husband. "I lost her again." Geyser groaned and they both began to search the small island again. Under the water, a dragonet grinned to herself as her parents searched. This was Stream. She had a habit for running away at random times. Her parents said that life with her was one long game of Hide-and-Seek. But they loved her anyways. Stream sometimes wondered if it was because of this habit that her parents decided not to have any more dragonets. Suddenly, Stream was pulled out of the water by a strong dragon. "Found her!" Geyser called and Seashell sighed with relief as she approached them. Stream giggled as her parents stared at her. "Hi," she offered before bursting out laughing. They had to crack a grin. Stream was adorable and her laugh made you smile with her, no matter how you were feeling. It was one of the things her parents loved about her.
At first glance, none of these dragonets had anything in common. But then you look deeper, and you see that they are all destined to be great friends. Their parents were friends, their grandparents inseparable. But little did they know that they would all be connected for another reason. A reason that would be starting very soon.
