Chapter Nineteen
TW: Fight scene that has some gruesome moments
Romans POV
After I got off the phone I went and sat down on the seats Logan, Virgil and I were sitting before.
My mind was in turmoil. One part was berating me for saying those things to Virgil and calling his foster dad, but some other, louder, part was convincing me that I did the right thing.
So why didn't I believe the louder part? It was what drove me to say those things to my friends before but I kept wanting to run after Virgil. However, every time I actually tried to stand and walk outside it was like that voice physically wouldn't let me.
I looked up when Logan came inside. His face black, he walked closer and stopped in front of me before slapping me hard upside the head.
"Ow!" I yelped, holding a hand up to where he had hit me. "What the hell?"
"You, Roman Garcia, are an imbecile!" He scolded me in what I often call his 'Angry Mom' voice. "To say you didn't deserve that would be a very sizeable falsehood!"
I said nothing for a second, staring at the floorboards instead. The whirlwind within my head raged on, and I struggled with the willpower to try and tell Logan about my call to Virgil's foster parents.
"Where's Virgil?" I finally asked.
"Why do you want to know?" Logan retorted. "So you can go shout at him again?"
"No, Logan," I said as I shook my head. The strange voice in my mind grew louder but I tried to ignore it. "I just...I did a bad thing and-"
"No shit you did a bad thing!" Logan scoffed. He almost never swears so I was kind of surprised. "You broke Virgil's heart! Or did you not get the hint when he ran away from you crying?"
"I know, but I didn't mean to!" I ran a hand over my face and stood up, starting to pace. "I really didn't. It's hard to explain, but I swear on my life."
Logan raised an eyebrow.
"I find that extremely hard to believe." He said, flatly.
I sighed.
"I'll fix it somehow, some time." I mumbled to myself, then spoke up so Logan could hear me. "But I need to talk to him right now!"
"Why, so you can taunt him with this aforementioned 'bad thing' you've done?" he asked with his arms crossed. "In case you haven't yet realized, I'm fairly certain that Virgil already knows about you being an insensitive person, as you frightened him to the point of a breakdown."
Even though I already knew that I was a total jerk, hearing about how Virgil reacting to it sent a throb of pain through my heart.
"I get it, I'm the actual worst." I conceded, speeding up my pacing. "But I did something possibly worse than that and I'm starting to really regret it. It's something that Virgil doesn't know about, mainly because it happened like five minutes ago, and I don't know why but I feel like it might have been the shitiest thing I've ever done. Worse though, I think it might have put Virge in danger."
Logan's eyes widened a bit in surprise and concern.
"Roman," He said slowly. "What did you do?"
I made eye contact with him.
"Just tell me where Virgil is." Was all I said.
"No." Logan shook his head. "He was right behind me when I came inside but as he decided to drop back, it's clear that he has no desire to be around you."
"But Logan, I-" I didn't get to finish my sentence before I was interrupted by crashing noise.
Logan and I whipped around as Virgil came flying through the now smashed window like he was thrown. He hit the opposite wall and fell to the floor.
"Virgil!" Logan and I shouted at the same time as we wasted no time rushing over to the fallen demigod and dropping to our knees to help him.
He had some cuts on his face that were starting to bleed and would've been surprised if he didn't break a bone or two. His palms were wrapped in bandages. When did they get there?
I went to check his breathing, but Logan got there first. I stood up and looked through the smashed window.
Standing on the other side of the wall were eight or nine glowering Laistrygonian Giants with leather armour and iron clubs.
I quickly ducked out of sight of the monsters. I waved a hand over where my thigh sheath was hidden by the Mist, and the sheath appeared. I flipped on of my Celestial Bronze blades into my hand and looked back at my friends. The son of Hades was starting to move.
"Well," I breathed, trying to ignore the monsters behind me. "At least I found Virgil."
Virgils POV
Oh my gods that hurt. What kind of steroids was that dude on?
My chest and head throbbed as I started to stir. The impact knocked all the air out of my lungs so, with my eyes still closed tightly, I struggled to take in oxygen. I could feel the cuts on my head and the broken glass around me and thought for a second I thought I was back at Sebastians.
I groaned in pain as my eyes started to flutter open.
"Virgil?" I heard a voice ask. "Are you alright?"
Through my half closed eyes I thought I saw something. My brain tricked me into thinking it looked like Roman smiling down at me. Maybe the argument was a dream?
"Am I dead?" I mumbled.
I blinked a couple times, clearing my sight enough to see Logan looking concerned as he looked at me. He let out a breath of relief when I spoke.
"I'm afraid not." he told me as he helped me prop myself up on my elbows.
"Son of a bitch." I swore as I clutched the side of my head. I mean, I was slammed through a window and into a solid wall so a little pain makes sense.
Then Roman slid from the other side of the station to stop next to me. He had one of his throwing knives in his hand.
"Huh." I said, half to myself, half to Roman. "Speak of the Devil and he shall appear."
Roman ignored me.
"Are you okay, Virgil?" He asked me. I was still mega pissed at him, but he seemed different than he did outside. Not just because he was way more calm, but the fierce, kind of scary look in his eyes were gone.
"Well apparently I'm not dead so I guess that's a good sign." I replied, trying not to look at him.
I saw him nod sightly from the corner of my eye.
"We've got a problem, Lo." He told Logan. "Around nine monsters out there. Laistrygonian Giants."
Logan reached out an arm to empty air. A moment later, his staff came flying through the me-shaped-hole I left in the window and landed in his hand.
"Yeah, I probably should've told you about that." I said, pushing myself up against the wall in a sitting position. "We should-"
I was cut off when two massive iron clubs smashed through the far wall, making two big holes that showed the Giants waiting outside. We all covered our faces with our arms so we didn't get stabbed by the flying splinters.
"-Get the hell out of here!" I finished. I reached out a hand to Logan who stood up and pulled me up onto my feet.
"Virgil, are you well enough to fight?" Roman asked, looking over at me as he pulled another throwing knife out of his sheath.
"I'm fine, Roman." I replied, pulling my sword out of its silver scabbard. "Go get the mortal out of here."
We all looked over to see the park ranger crouched behind the counter looking scared out of his mind as he stared between the angry Giants and the three teenage demigods holding weapons. The Mist would stop him from seeing the Laistrygonians as we did, but whatever he was seeing couldn't be good.
"I got it." Roman rolled his eyes, then he went over to the counter.
Logan and I looked at each other and nodded.
We both ran towards the wall that used to have a door on it and jumped through the hole that was smashed by the clubs.
The stairs were destroyed too so Logan and I hopped down from the deck onto the grass. I landed in a typical superhero landing with my sword in my hand as I looked up at the Giants in front of us.
"I'm back bitches!" I said, then gave Logan an unspoken signal.
Before the Laistrygonians could react, I sprung off of Logans staff that he held up and rocketed towards the closest giant. I stabbed the point of my sword through its chest. The monster's heavy club dropped to the ground as the Giant melted into liquid shadow around my blade. I landed on my feet when I hit the ground.
One down, only eight to go.
"How are you alive?" The Giant that this-bitch-empty-ed me asked. "I threw you hard enough to split a boulder!"
Another Laistrygonian brought its club down on me but I dodged it and Logan knocked it away with a powerful hit to the gut with his staff.
"Hey, you're the one that told me to survive." I answered, slashing at its leg with my sword. "I just followed orders!"
I launched myself up high enough to slice a wound open in his midriff bad enough for him to melt into a black puddle.
I could see Logan battling two Giants at once off to the side so I tried to get over there to help him, but I was blocked by a club slamming down only a couple inches in front of me. Then, I got a crazy and probably idiotic idea.
I grabbed onto the club and as the Laistrygonian lifted it, he lifted me too. I jumped from his club to the top of his head, causing him to stumble and growl angrily.
"Virgil, what the hell are doing?" I heard Roman, who had just jumped down from the deck to join the fight, yell.
"Killing monsters, what does it look like Garcia?" I replied and I hopped up to avoid the monster's cub as it hit itself attempting to hit me. Then, another Giant reached out a hand and grabbed me too-tightly in it's fist. "Whoops."
My sword fell to the ground as the Giant lifted me in the air.
"Okay so maybe that didn't work as well as I thought it would." I said as I struggled to get out of the Giant's grip to no avail.
"Hold on, Virgil!" Roman called from below as he threw off his letterman jacket.
Goddammit. Even when I'm literally a couple seconds from potential death I'd rather admire Roman in a t-shirt then try to escape.
Looking down, I could see Roman as he slid under one Laistrygonian and tripped another in one fluid movement in order to get a clear shot. With one of his throwing knives in his hand, he looked like he was aiming.
Then he threw his bronze blade, perfectly accurate to sink into the center of the Giants that was hold me forehead. The monster opened its fist as it yelled in pain and started to disintegrate into yellow dust and I was sent hurtling towards the ground.
I closed my eyes, waiting for the impact. But when I opened them I was being caught by a certain son of Aphrodite. His arms were wrapped close around me and I instinctively pressed my forehead into his chest as we hit the ground. Roman took most of the force since he landed landed on his back but he only seemed slightly out of breath as he let me go.
"Are you alright Virge?" He asked worriedly.
Only one thought came to me as I looked up at his crimson eyes and warm brown hair, his face focused only on my safety:
I'm going to be in love with this boy until the day I die.
"Virgil?" He asked again when I was too distracted to answer.
"Oh! Uh, yeah I'm fine." I stumbled over my words a bit. "I lost my sword somewhere though."
Wow Virgil, so smooth.
"Let's go look for it, then we can help Logan take out the rest of these Laistrygonians." He suggested as he stood up and hesitantly offered me a hand.
I just stared at his outstretched hand for a second. I still didn't 100% forgive him for the things he said to me, but he did just save my life with no hesitation. And I felt like he really wasn't himself when he said those things, so I grabbed his hand and he pulled me up to my feet.
I looked around, seeing that the remaining five Giants were surrounding Logan, who was holding his own but couldn't keep it up forever.
"I can find my sword later," I told him as I pointed him towards Logan. "Right now we have to help Logan."
"Here." Roman said as he pulled a throwing knife from his sheath and handed it to me. "Use that as a dagger until you get your sword."
I nodded and we ran over to the horde of monsters that were attacking one of my best friends.
As soon as we got within reach of the Giants I jumped and stabbed one of them in the back of the leg with the throwing knife, dragging the blade down as I fell. The Laistrygonian crumbled into dust Infinity War style with a final roar.
Roman and I joined Logan's side.
"Pleasant of you to join me." Logan remarked as he hit a Giant over the head with his blessed staff.
"And miss this party?" Roman said back, flinging throwing knives left and right. "We would never."
"You wish." I replied to Logan as I sliced at a Giant's wrist and dodged a club.
As I was dodging the club, another monster swung around with its fist, about to slam into Roman and Logan.
"No!" I shouted, diving to the side to push my friends out of the way.
I got the full brunt to the hit and went flying away from them, Romans throwing knife knocked out of my grip, and landed at least two dozen feet away in the dirt.
I felt dizzy and I definitely broke a rib or two. I coughed, trying to get air into my lungs. My eyesight cleared to see a Laistrygonian Giant thundering itself over to me but I was too disoriented to get up or dodge. I heard Logan and Roman call my name, but they wouldn't be able to get to me in time.
A few steps until I was dead.
"What an honour it is," The Laistrygonian spoke in its deep voice. "To witness the demise of Hades' only son."
My hands scrambled in the grass searching for anything I could use to defend myself.
The Giant was within reach. Without a villain monologue or anything, he started to slam down two huge fists on top of me.
I reach my arm out looking for something, anything. a rock even. But I found something much better. My fingertips felt cold metal...in the shape of a handle. My sword!
Without hesitation I grabbed the handle of the sword and shoved in up into the Giant's wrist. It pulled back in pain and shock. I pulled my Stygian Iron blade out of the monster's flesh and managed to land on my feet, ignoring the stabbing pain of my ribs.
Not letting the Laistrygonian regain it's footing, I stabbed it in the side and watched the monster melt into shadow.
"I don't know," I panted. "I'm not feeling too honoured."
I stuck my sword back in its scabbard as Logan and Roman ran to me after defeating the last of the Giants.
"Virgil that was stupidly heroic!" Roman half-scolded half-admired. "Never do something like that again."
I waved away his concern, although it was still difficult to breathe.
"It was either that, or you both die." I said nonchalantly. I was lucky that I had practice hiding pain because if I didn't, I would've been curled up in a ball on the ground. "And I'm fine."
Except that right after I said that, my legs gave out and I fell toward the ground. If Roman didn't catch me, I would've fallen face first in the dirt.
"Woah. Yeah you're not fine." Roman pointed out as he lifted me so he could put my arm around his shoulders. Not that I was complaining.
"You need Ambrosia and Nectar as soon as possible." Logan instructed as he lead Roman and I towards the half-destroyed rangers station that had our backpacks in it.
"I need to stop getting injured or there's not gonna be enough Ambrosia for you guys if you get hurt." I tried to say, but some of my words came out slurred. Roman and Logan looked at me and then each other in alarm.
I found the irony in how I ran away from Sebastian to stop getting beaten all the time, then started a demigod life where I get hurt pretty much the same amount.
"That would be the concussion, most likely from hitting the wall." Logan informed, climbing up the wreckage that used to be the stairs. Roman and I followed. "Let us hope that our resources are enough to heal him."
"And if they're not?" Roman asked as we got to the deck. Logan turned around to answer him but stopped talking, distracted by something behind us.
"Oh gods." Logan mumbled as he facepalmed.
Roman and I turned around, looking for what distracted him.
"What? Whatisit?" I asked, the slur in my words getting more noticeable.
Was the sun always that bright?
"You two should cover your eyes." Logan told us, his eyes still hidden by his facepalm.
"Logan what-" Roman tried to ask, but was cut off.
"Just trust me." Logan said.
So we covered our eyes. Something I couldn't see blasted light through the cracks between my fingers and warmed my face to the point where I thought there might've been a solid chance of me getting tanned from it.
Eventually the light dimmed.
"You can look now." Logan's voice sounded exasperated.
I uncovered my eyes and squinted at what I was looking at.
In the grassy area we had just had a battle in was a rather, well, hot guy that looked around 20 or 21. He had wavy blonde hair, very tanned skin, and sky blue eyes that matched Patton's. He was wearing blue skinny jeans with a white tank top and was leaning on the hood of a sick red sports car. It wouldn't have been too strange, except that the grass in a circle around the car was smouldering and burning.
"Who is that?" I asked in confusion, though I felt like I might know.
"That," Logan pinched the bridge of his nose. "Is Apollo. God of The Sun, and Patton's father."
