56. Can I Walk You Through A Hypothetical?
The ride to Berlin was tense given the fact that Mary despised the man they were going to see. Zemo had singlehanded destroyed her family. Tearing them apart all for revenge over something they had no control over and tried to help all they could back in Sokovia. The Avengers did what they could with what they had. But Zemo did not need to bomb the UN in Vienna, pinning it on Bucky, killing innocent lives in the process.
T'Chaka died that day in Vienna. Mary watched as T'Challa cradled his father's head and body, weeping for his beloved Baba in the ashes of the bombed building. Knowing his father was dead and there was nothing that could be done otherwise.
Mary would never forgive Zemo for that alone.
So for her husband to want to go see the vile man was something Mary never thought would happen. Him even suggesting it was a shock to her and Sam.
When they arrived at the prison, Mary wanted to leave instantly. She didn't like the feeling of being near Zemo. She didn't like the thought of Bucky being around him. Even though the trigger words were gone, they still meant something to Bucky and Mary. She didn't like the thought of Zemo attempting to use the words against her husband.
Everything about Zemo made Mary's skin crawl. And being in Germany didn't help either. Too many things in Mary's past happened in Germany or started there. Hitler and the Nazis invading Poland, the Avengers fighting in the airport. All of what transpired because of those events started in Germany. Mary did not like being in that country.
"He's just through that corridor." The guard says to the three of them.
"Give us a sec." Bucky says as he takes a breath. Sam looks over his teammate as the guard steps away. He then looks at Mary and he already knows she's going to be pissed at him, "I'm gonna go in alone."
"The hell you are." Mary snaps instantly. "He tore our family apart, James. He destroyed everything i had built up over decades." She states, her voice shaking. He places his hands on her arms to help her calm down.
Bucky pulls her into his arms to further help her and he sighs, "I know, Doll." He whispers to her. "And this is why i'm going in alone to talk with him. You have a bigger grudge against him than i do, more reason to hate him."
"I don't like it, James." Mary says into his chest and she breathes out slowly, calming herself down bit by bit. "At least let Sam go with you?" She asks.
"Not this time." Bucky responds and Sam looks at him confused.
"Why?" The Falcon asks as Mary pulls herself away from her husband slowly.
"You're an Avenger. You know how he feels about that." Bucky reminds Sam. "Mary's essentially the Mother of the Avengers, he probably despises her the most."
"Feeling is mutual." Mary gripes as she crosses her arms over her chest and leans into Sam's side. Her friend's arm swinging over her shoulders instinctively.
"It's not like you two were known for frolickin' in the sun together." Sam reminds Bucky.
"He was obsessed with Hydra. We have a history together." Bucky defends himself, "Trust me..... I got it." He says to both of them. He presses his lips to Mary's forehead and then looks at her, "Trust me." He whispers to her.
"I do trust you." Mary whispers back. "It's him i don't trust." She replies, "You were there when everything happened in Siberia... you saw what it did to our family, the change it did for the worse."
"And he's been in prison for it since you and T'Challa handed him over to Everett and the CIA." Bucky responds and kisses her cheek briefly, "I know what i'm doing."
Mary sighs as Bucky walks towards the corridor the guard said Zemo was locked in. When Bucky is out of earshot, Sam looks at Mary, "Doc, why are your eyes glowing?" He questions
Mary huffs, "Watch over my body, okay?" She says to Sam and his eyebrows shoot upwards in surprise.
"I'm sorry, watch over your what?" Sam questions in disbelief but Mary's eyes glow bright amber before her body goes limp, "Sh-t." He swears as she holds onto Mary's body and looks around to make sure no one saw what happened.
When Mary opened her eyes, she was a projection of her soul in Zemo's cell. She and Stephen had been working on her being able to project her soul from her body for a while, and she felt as if now was the right time to try it out. She trusted Bucky with every breath in her lungs, but she did not trust Zemo at all. He had torn her family apart.
Her eyes glanced around the room divided by a glass wall where Zemo sat on his bed. He was still, as if he knew what was going to happen to some degree. His hands were clasped as he waited for the door on the other side of the glass to open and reveal Bucky.
Bucky steps in front of the glass and stares at where Zemo sits. Mary glances between the two men until she feels the shift in Zemo's soul.
"желание." Longing. "ржавые." Rusted. "Семнадцать." Seventeen. Zemo begins to repeat the trigger words, standing into the light of his cell. It makes Mary fume but when she watches her husband, he doesn't react. The words don't affect him anymore. They haven't since Jamie was a few months old.
"Those days are over." Bucky says quietly but confidently as he watches Zemo.
Zemo simply smirks, "I know." He states, "I just wanted to see how the new you reacts to the old words." He says, walking up towards the glass. He looks Bucky over intensely. Like he was looking for something. "Something is still in there." He mutters, looking into Bucky's eyes before shaking his head, "At least you were not conscious for most of your imprisonment."
"That time wasn't exactly a picnic." Bucky reminds Zemo.
Zemo shrugs, his hands clasped in front of him. "For what it's worth, i'm sorry." He says as he begins to pace his cell. "It was never personal. You were simply a means to a necessary end." He states.
"It was personal to my wife." Bucky states the moment he knows Zemo had stopped speaking. "To my daughter." He adds and Mary looks at Bucky with a small smile, he always would defend her to his last breath. She had built the Avengers with Fury. They had become her new family. And Zemo broke that family.
Zemo smirks, "Ah, yes. The mother of the Avengers." He says, "How is she, by the way? And your daughter."
Mary could see Bucky tense up slightly but she knew he wouldn't give in to whatever Zemo was trying to do. Bucky was too smart for that, especially when he knew using family was the easiest way to get people to break.
"Still pissed at you." Bucky replies and then looks at Zemo more intently. "Someone recreated the super soldier serum." He says and Zemo turns to look over at Bucky instantly in surprise. "I need to find out who."
Zemo steps slowly towards Bucky behind the glass and moves to clasp his hands behind his back. "You are assuming Hydra has something to do with this, which is why you came to me, which means you are desperate." He deduces from Bucky simply asking a point blank question. Mary had to admit, Zemo was smart. He was smart enough to break up the Avengers the worst way possible in the past. He was intelligent. "Luckily for you, i know where to begin." Zemo states with a smirk.
Mary knows her body needs its soul again, so before Bucky leaves the cell room, she snaps herself back to her body. Her eyes snap open glowing bright amber like before and Sam jumps, nearly dropping Mary's body.
"What the hell was that, Doc?" Sam snaps as he breathes heavily. "What did you do?"
Mary breathes out as she stands up slowly with the help of Sam, "I used a technique Stephen taught me." She explains. "Astral projection, only i do it with my own soul." She states and Sam leans against the wall, taking it in.
"You're wicked powerful, you know that?" Sam asks, teasing her but fully aware just how powerful Mary could be if she actually wanted to be.
"Painfully aware." She replies softly, her arms wrapping themselves around her waist. "I brought Winnie back from the dead, and Tony." She reminds Sam. "I can conjure a soul with a snap of my fingers. I could kill Walker if i wanted to by simply nodding my head."
"Like I Dream of Jeannie nodding your head?" Sam questions, knowing Mary is completely serious about the extent of her powers.
"Yes." Mary smirks but sighs, "Being with Wanda two weeks after getting my powers was not something i intended for... and she didn't either..."
"What exactly happened during all of that?" Sam asks curiously. No one but Wanda, Pietro, Mary and Bucky knew what had truly happened in Westview that were associated with the Avengers. And they wanted to keep it that way. What Wanda experienced was personal and life changing for her. Mary didn't want anyone knowing the full extent unless Wanda told them herself.
"Her power got out of control for a moment.. but i was able to help her." Mary explains, "I could calm her soul... but when her power hit me when everything happened...." Mary says hesitantly, her fingertips touching her stone around her neck. "The Soul Stone's consciousness awoke."
"The stone has a consciousness?" Sam asks in shock.
"According to Nebula, yes. The other guardians agree as well." Mary says, it was nerve wracking to think about most days for Mary. Knowing the Soul Stone has a slumbering consciousness that wants souls to grow ever powerful, "It's power hungry, it consumed souls in the past. It lusts for more... but Wanda was able to subdue it, put it back to sleep."
"Thank God for Wanda." Sam mutters in disbelief. "I can't see you as a bad guy, Doc..." He says as he looks down at her and Mary nods.
"I don't think i ever want to find out what would happened if it woke up." She says, looking up at Sam. "James refuses to talk about it, but i know he and Steve have contingency plans with Tony and Stephen just in case."
"Why not just call Wanda again?"
"Wanda... She's not reachable right now." Mary says sadly. "After the events that transpired at Westview... she vanished."
Sam could see how affected Mary was by talking about Wanda being gone. The two women were sisters in their eyes. Pietro was always going to be grateful towards Mary for saving his life, but Wanda and Mary had a bond that was sometimes unexplainable.
But Mary knew it was because the three of them were supposed Children of the Stones.
Sam pulled Mary into his arms and held her, knowing she needed that comfort.
And after a short hug, Bucky walks out of the cell room where he was talking with Zemo. His arm wraps around his wife's shoulder as usual and he looks at Sam. Bucky's eyes indicating that he'd explain what happened when they left the prison.
"What the hell, James?"
"What are you talking about? You wanna break Zemo out of jail?" Sam snaps in disbelief as Bucky leads his wife and teammate into a garage of some kind. "Where are we, Buck?"
"Have you lost your mind, James Buchanan?" Mary snaps at her husband in disbelief.
"You're in for it now, Bucky." Sam teases. "She used your middle name and first name together."
Bucky rolls his eyes, "Thanks, Sam. I know what my name means. I've heard her say it before." He retorts. Whenever Mary was truly upset with anyone, she would use their middle name along with their first name. The motherly instinct in her had always been there, even before she and Bucky were married. "But we have no leads, no moves, nothing."
"What we have is one of the most dangerous men in the world behind bars." Sam quips.
"We also have eight super soldiers that are on the loose." Bucky snaps back.
"Zemo's gonna mess with our minds. Especially yours. No offense." Sam reminds Bucky. He didn't have to remind Mary, she was against Zemo being out of prison even more than Sam. She hated the man.
Bucky walks over to a fuse box with his flashlight and flips on the switches. Once the lights turn on, he shuts down his flashlight and stares at Sam. "Offense." He snaps and Mary looks around at the car garage they're in. "Super Soldiers go against everything he believes in. He is crazy, but he still has a code."
"And we've been on the wrong side of that code, James." Mary points out. "So has Sam, Steve, Becca." She reminds her husband who she's sure doesn't need reminding, but she was going to tell him anyway.
"He blew up the UN, he killed King T'Chaka and framed you for it." Sam states angrily.
"Still pissed at him for that. T'Chaka did not deserve to die. He was a good king, a good man. And a beloved father." Mary grumbles. "Framing you was the tip of the iceberg for me." She states sharply. "If Cha Cha knew you were here, he would be furious with you."
Bucky rolls his eyes but Sam continues Mary's train of thought, "Did you forget that? And to what Mary said, do you think the Wakandans forgot about it?"
"It's a rhetorical question. They didn't." Mary snaps. "James, as your wife, i do not agree with this. And as the Advisor to the King of Wakanda, i cannot allow you to do this." She states, her loyalties were torn, and she hated it to her very core. The loyalty to her beloved husband versus their king and nation.
"I know why this matters to you, but it's pushing you off the deep end." Sam inputs, he wasn't going to get into the middle of the spousal debate, but he was still going to try to convince Bucky against breaking Zemo out.
"Luna... We don't know how they're gettin' the serum. We don't even know how many there are." Bucky says and then looks at both of them, "Look, let me walk you both through a hypothetical. Can i walk you through a hypothetical?"
"I hate your hypotheticals." Mary quips, "Your hypotheticals always got us into trouble as kids." She reminds him and then stares down her husband, "What did you do?"
"I... I didn't do anything..." Bucky obviously lies. "The weakest point in any system isn't the software, the hardware, it's the meatware. The human element." He begins his hypothetical and Mary knows where this is going before he even begins. "Now, in this lockup, it's nine to one, prisoners to guards. And if two prisoners start fighting.... Then the protocol says four guards have to respond."
"So why would two prisoners randomly start fighting at that moment?" Sam questions.
"Who knows? There could be many reasons." Bucky says and takes a pause, looking at his wife who was fuming. "But the point is, these things escalate. Lockdown procedures would have to be initiated, and with all those bodies flying around left and right, wouldn't be hard to slip down a hallway or two." He continues and he knows he'll need to make it up to Mary somehow. He just wasn't sure how in this moment yet, but he continues his story. "And if the fire alarm is tripped while prisoners were being separated... someone could use the chaos to their advantage.."
"I don't like how casual you're bein' about this..." Sam remarks, "This is unnatural..."
"It's really not." Mary cuts in, interrupting Sam. "He would do this all the time to Steve and I as kids and teenagers. Always telling us what he did, after he had already done it."
"But where-" Sam stops himself and looks around, "Where the hell are we, man?" He snaps.
The door opens and Mary's head whips to the door, her eyes instantly glow bright amber and her fingers begin to dance around whisps. She was pissed and she knew who was coming through that door if she knew anything about her husband.
"I knew it." Mary snaps, seeing Zemo dressed in a guards uniform walk through the doors. "I'm going to kill him." She whispers under her breath.
