53. Cyborg Brain of Yours

Bucky hoisted his wife off her feet and onto his shoulders as he, Sam and Mary began to walk back to where they could get a ride back to the States from the airport. Mary smiled softly as Bucky rested his hands on her knees and calves. Her hands gently combing through his hair, she could feel that it was calming to him after their revelation of more super soldiers. "We can't tell Steve... Not yet.." She says to them both. She could feel Bucky was torn about telling their brother, Steve had a right to know, being the first super soldier in existence, but at the same time, Steve was retired. He was happy with his family in Wakanda now. Bucky and Mary didn't want to interfere with that.

Sam looks up at Mary hesitantly, "Why not?" He asks, "Shouldn't he know?"

Bucky shakes his head, he knew his brother more than most. He had been with Steve since before the serum. If Steve knew there were more out there, if Evelyn knew. It would cause the Rogers family to be consumed with righting the wrongs done to the Erskine family legacy. The legacy both Steve and Evelyn were a part of. They would want to know everything from the how, the why, when and where. They would want all the information. But Mary and Bucky didn't have any answers yet.

"Not until we have answers." Mary responds to Sam and it clicks in his mind. He eventually nods in agreement and then looks at the couple with a small smirk.

"Sorry about RedWing." Bucky says after a few minutes of silence. Mary glances down at her husband's head with a raised eyebrow of suspicion.

"No, you're not." Sam retorts and then looks up at Mary, "I know she is though." He teases and Mary winks at her friend, pointing at him as if to tell him, 'i got you.' "What's going on in that big cyborg brain of yours?"

"Sa-"

"It's computing." Bucky states back sarcastically and Mary's amber eyes widen as she tries to hold in her laughter. Her hand over her mouth as she stifles her laughs. It had been far too long since she heard her husband joke like he used to back in their old time.

"You know? I can actually see it, Alpha." Mary teases, joining in on the joke. Her husband suppresses a chuckle as he dips his head, shaking it.

"I can see the gears turning." Sam interjects with a laugh. "Oh! They're malfunctioning, shutting down. Yep, they're on fire." He jokes and Mary laughs.

"We gotta figure out where the serum's coming from." Bucky states, bringing the conversation back to the topic and problem at hand. How did eight people come into contact with the super soldier serum that was supposed to be destroyed decades ago.

"Yeah. And how the hell after eighty years are there eight super soldiers runnin' loose?" Sam questions and Mary nods in agreement.

"It doesn't add up." Mary says as the motor of a car pulls up alongside them. Mary turns to see the imposter along with his sidekick and her eyes instantly narrow. Bucky holds onto his wife's legs to keep her from getting off his shoulders and attacking Walker. His own eyes roll when the horn of the car honks at the three of them.

"So that didn't go as planned, huh?" Walker states in a joking matter, opening the door for the three of them to join him and Lemar in the jeep. Mary keeps her eyes on Walker as Bucky and Sam continue walking past the jeep. "Okay..." Walker grumbles. He mutters to his driver and the jeep then slowly follows alongside the trio. "Look, at least we know what we're up against now, huh?" Walker states, trying to make conversation as if he's included in the topic at hand. "And we're pretty sure it's one of the Big Three, so..."

"Aliens, androids or wizards?" Falcon questions.

"Pretty sure." Walker states.

"There's no such thing as wizards." Bucky snaps annoyed at the entire situation.

"Alright, then it's aliens or androids." Walker responds casually.

"Or super soldiers." Mary quips back.

"Sh-t. Super soldiers, for real?" Lemar asks nervously. Mary glances at Lemar and sighs, she could feel the good in him, but she had to put that aside in the moment due to his connection to the man who stole her daughter's shield.

"Yeah." Sam states as he and Bucky continue to walk with Mary on her husband's shoulders. The jeep keeping at the same pace the men are walking.

"Wow. All right, well, then we gotta work together." Walker says like it's a given.

"That's not happening."

"No way in hell." Mary and Bucky state at the same time. Their disgust for the man was showing but either Walker was ignoring it, or that blind to people disliking him.

Walker scoffs, "I think we stand a much better chance if we all just-"

"Just because you carry that shield-" Bucky starts.

"It doesn't mean you're Captain America." Mary finishes her husband's thought. Her eyes were narrowed at the blonde man, the imposter that he is. Did he even realize who he was talking to? That he was talking to Steve's sister, brother in law and close friend? Or was he blind to that as well.

"Look, I've done the work, okay?" Walker defends himself.

"You ever jump on top of a grenade?" Mary questions the man.

"Yeah. Actually, i have. Four times. It's a thing i do with my helmet. It's a reinforced helmet. It's a long story, but, any- it's twenty miles to the airport. You guys need a ride." Walker rambles and Mary narrows her eyes at his answer. She scoffs. Steve didn't have a reinforced helmet, he had nothing but his will to do the right thing, he would've sacrificed himself that day at Camp Lehigh to save everyone there from the dummy grenade that was tossed his way by Colonel Phillips as a test. "Guys, seriously. Get in." He states as the jeep stops and he opens the door.

Bucky lifts his wife off his shoulders and the three of them climb into the jeep reluctantly. Mary is then situated on Bucky's lap, for everybody's safety. Sam sits beside Bucky as the five of them have a staring contest. Mary's eyes couldn't look away from the shield. Her daughter's shield.

"Nice, isn't it?" Lemar asks Mary, trying to make nice and have a conversation. "The shield, i mean." He states and Mary glances up at Lemar with a raised eyebrow.

"Yes. It is." Mary replied curtly. "I remember when i picked it out for my brother." She states and crosses her arms over her chest.

"When you-" Lemar mutters in disbelief and then his eyes widen in realization. But Walker doesn't let him get to ask Mary anything more when he bring everyone's attention to himself.

"Okay, we've got eight super soldiers on a bulk supply run." Walker states, shifting in his seat and looking between Sam, Mary and Bucky. "Why?"

Sam glances at Walker, "They say their mission is to get things back to the way it was during the Blip. Maybe they're just trying to help?" Sam says and Mary looks down. She had survived the Snap, her husband and Sam didn't. Some never recovered from losing their loved ones, others made new lives. Trying to live in the new normal.

"They had a funny way of showing it." Bucky comments.

"That serum doesn't exactly have a great track record. No offense." Walker states, looking at Bucky. Mary tries to lunge at John but Bucky has his hands ready to stop his wife.

"Offense taken." Mary snaps, "You're talking about my family." She reminds Walker and the imposter wants to say something but he decides against it in the moment.

"We need to figure out where they're going. How's you track 'em here? The Flag Smashers?" Sam asks curiously.

"Ah, no, we didn't track them, we tracked you, uh, through Redwing." Lemar answers Sam's question and the Falcon recoils.

"You hacked my tech?" He snaps in disgust.

"Sorry. It's not exactly hacking. It's government property." Walker says and then motions to himself, "Kind of the government." He teases and Mary tries to lunge at Walker again, only to be held down by her husband again. Walker looks at Mary and Bucky and then glances at Sam, "He always stare like that?" He asks.

"You get used to it." Sam responds.

"Or you don't." Mary says with a shrug.

Walker looks between the couple and then clears his throat. "Okay... look.. you know, things have gotten kind of, uh..."

"Chaotic." Lemar steps in.

"Yeah. The GRC, they're doing the best they can to get things up and running smoothly, post Blip." Walker states, trying to clarify what he can for the trio.

"Reactivating citizenship, social security, healthcare. Basically just managing resources for the refugees who were displaced by the return." Lemar explains the GRC to the trio and Mary shifts on her husband's lap, wrapping her arm around his neck.

"The Global Reparation Council does all that. I get that." Sam states curtly.

"My sister in law helped found that council." Mary adds.

"So why exactly are you two here?" Sam asks Walker and Lemar.

"Well, they provide the resources and we keep things stable." Lemar answers but Mary doesn't believe that's the whole truth, despite feeling Lemar's soul and knowing he has a good heart in this.

"Yeah, violent revolutionaries aren't usually good for anyone's cause." Walker says bluntly. Mary eyes Walker, her eyes glowing amber slightly and Bucky takes a moment to run his hand up and down her arm to hopefully calm her down.

"Usually said by the people with the resources." Sam quips and Bucky rolls his eyes with a nod of his head towards Sam's statement.

"We got a lot of resources." Walker tells the trio, "If you guys, if you guys joined up with us, we could-"

"No." Bucky and Mary state in unison. There was no room for debate in their eyes.

"I got mad respect for the three of y'all. But you were getting your asses kicked till we showed up." Lemar butts in and Mary raises an eyebrow as her husband turns his attention towards Lemar for the first time.

"Who are you?" Bucky asks.

"Lemar Hoskins." Lemar responds.

"Look, i see a guy hanging out of a helicopter in tactical gear, i need a lot more than Lemar Hoskins." Sam responds and Mary nods. If Lemar was involved with Walker as a duo, he had a name he went by.

"I'm Battlestar. John's partner." Lemar replies, answering their questions.

"Battlestar?" Bucky asks curtly, Mary can feel her husband tense up and turn his head towards the driver. "Stop the car!" He shouts.

The car comes to a slow stop and Walker looks at the three of them. "Look, i... I get it, okay? I get the attitude, i do." John says, trying to plead with the trio.

"Do you?" Mary snaps as Bucky helps his wife step out of the jeep.

"You didn't think that the shield was gonna end up here." Walker states and Mary crosses her arms over her chest once again, her leg popped into a bent position as she eyes Walker. Bucky throws his flesh arm around his wife's shoulders and looks at Walker. "I get it, Mary." He adds and then looks at Sam, "And i'm... I'm not trying to be Steve. I'm not trying to replace Steve. I'm just trying to be the best Captain America i can be. That's it." Walker says and Mary raises an eyebrow at Walker, "It'd be a whole lot easier if i had Cap's wingmen and sister on my side."

Sam scoffs in shock and then looks at Mary, her eyes telling him that she already knew this was going to happen. He smirks in disbelief at Walker and Lemar before making his way out of the jeep. "It's always that last line." He says to John. As he moves out of the jeep, he looks at Walker one last time, "And if you have respect for us, then why did no one contact Mary and Bucky when the government decided to hand you the shield after their daughter gave it up?" Sam asks, his arms raised in the air before turning around and dropping them and walking off to catch up with Bucky.

The Sergeant was done with Walker and had taken off as the imposter turned to talk with Sam one on one. Effectively alienating Steve's family by not talking with them yet again.

When they're on a plane back to the states, the three of them don't speak. The silence was enough for them. Sam was laying down on the bench while Bucky was sitting on the crate in the middle, his wife straddling his hips and sitting on his lap. Mary rested her head on Bucky's shoulder, her hand gripping his dog tags tightly as a way to ground her and her emotions.

Bucky had been whispering endless nothings into Mary's ear in Russian to keep her calm and to soothe her powers before they spiked and caused the power in the plane to go on the fritz and cause a crash.

Sam looks over at the couple, his arms crossed over his chest, Mary's amber eyes find Sam's. She sighs and then lifts her head off Bucky's shoulder, her hand that was holding onto his dog tags moves to cup his stubbled cheek. "Alpha.." She mumbles, drawing his attention. "Are you all right?" She asks him for Sam.

Bucky nods his head ever so slightly and then looks at his wife, his arms wrapped around her waist tightly. His vibranium hand cupping the back of her head. "Let's take the shield back, Luna." He says to her and Sam. "Let's take the shield back and do this ourselves." He states under his breath. Bucky was done playing by the rules at this point after meeting the man that had taken up the mantle of his brother.

"We can't just run up on the man, beat him up, and take it." Sam states to the couple as he sat up slowly on the bench.

"Why the hell not?" Mary questions annoyedly.

"Do you remember what happened the last time we stole it?" Sam questions the couple and Bucky faintly rolls his eyes.

"Maybe." The Sergeant replies.

"I'll help you in case you forgot." Sam retorts and then looks at Mary and Bucky, his eyes were tired and he just wanted a little bit of rest before he knew he'd have to put on a face again for the public or anyone he'd talk to outside of Mary and Bucky. "Sharon was branded enemy of the state for helping Evelyn take our gear, Evelyn was in hiding at Stephen Strange's apartment until Steve took her to Wakanda. Then Steve, Pietro and I were on the run for two years. And while you two lived it up in Wakanda, we were out there fighting against everything and everyone." He says to them sharply and Mary sighs, looking down as she remembers seeing Sam, Pietro and her brother come back every now and again, but it was rare. And they always looked exhausted and emotionally beat up. "And i don't know about you two, but i don't wanna live the rest of my life la vida loca." Sam says. "We just got our asses handed to us by super soldiers, and we got nothing."

Bucky shakes his head, "Not entirely true." He says, confusing Sam and Mary. The wife looked at her husband curiously as he stood up, he kept his arms around her and carried her to the bench Sam is sitting on. He sets her down beside Sam before sitting down himself. He inhales sharply and then looks at the two of them, "There is someone that you two should meet." He tells them, only confusing them more.
