50. Your New Captain America

"Wait, let me get this right." Steve says through his laughter over the Kimoyo Bead call Mary had set up with her brother. "Your new friend Yori, set you and Buck up on a date because he doesn't know you two are married?" He asks as he continues to laugh.

Mary laughs and nods, "That's exactly it." She says as she slips on her cream colored sweater that matched her heeled sandals and dress. "I haven't been on a date with my husband since he proposed." Mary says, finally realizing how long it had been since the two of them were alone together.

Her brother can't contain his laughter, causing his daughter to wander over to Steve and look at her father with curiosity.
"Essie, come see Auntie Mary." Steve says to his daughter and Esme's face appears in the hologramed call. "She looks pretty, huh?"

"Yeah!" Esme shouts with a grin, "Auntie Mawy is awways pwetty." Esme says to her father like it's a known fact. Mary smiles at her niece.

"Thank you, Es." Mary says to her niece and then looks back at Steve, "How's Eve doing with the pregnancy?" She asks her brother, it had been three months since they had left Wakanda, totally the months up since Evelyn announced she was expecting was now six months. In just a few short months, they would know whether they were having an Abraham or a Georgaina.

"She's doing pretty well, i think. Essie and I are keeping her comfortable since Shuri said to keep her off her feet. Jamie's been a huge help with knowing what needs to be done for her." Steve responds with a small smile, "How did the shield ceremony go?" He asks.

"Good. Sam was a huge help to Becca in delivering the shield over. The speech was touching, Stevie. You would've cried." Mary teases her brother and Steve scoffs with a smile. "Rhodey and Becca talked while Sam and I met up at a coffee shop with James and Winnie."

Steve nods as he takes in the information, "They needed that." He whispers and then glances over and sees Jamie, "Hey bud." Steve calls over to his nephew, "I got your mom on the beads."

Mary grins when her son enters the hologram frame and she waves at her son, "Hi, Sunshine." She says to her son, "Dad and I miss you tons."

Jamie smiles softly, "I miss you guys, too." He tells his mother. "How's everything going on in the states?" He asks.

Mary smiles at her son, "It's going as good as it can be. The pardon for your dad is holding, Winnie and Becca are in Queens with Peter and May now. Your dad and I have a date set up by a new friend of ours."

Jamie laughs softly, "A date? Does the friend not know you and Dad are married?"

Mary shakes her head with a smile, "No, we've been keeping our identities secret from people that don't technically need to know." She states, "Makes it easier to walk Brooklyn."

"How is our old stomping grounds, Lizzie?" Steve asks from where he sits a little behind Jamie.

"Different. It's so much different from how we remember." She says, "James and I have a game of trying to find buildings we remember." Mary states with a smile and then looks at Jamie, "How are you doing with everything, Sunshine? I know it's not easy."

Jamie sighs, "I wish i was there... but i understand why i'm needed here." He states to his mother and her heart hurts when she sees the facial expression Jamie makes without realizing it. He truly was feeling left out, and there wasn't anything they could do to fix it in this moment.

"I'm looking at all the schools around the area, Sunshine. You'll be with us soon, but for now... you being at home is the safest for you." Mary says and Jamie nods in agreement. He knows all of this, he has never forgotten.

"Luna." Bucky calls from the living room, signalling to his wife that it was time to leave.

Mary turns back to her Kimoyo beads on the nightstand and slides them onto her wrist. "Just a second." Mary says to her husband with a small smile. She turns back to Jamie, "Your father and I love you... so much, Sunshine. Don't ever doubt that."

Jamie nods, "I never do." He says softly, "And.. I know it's a part of my gift that i think like this..." he adds, "I'll talk with Becca and Winnie." He says with a small smile, "I miss them."

Mary nods, "They miss you too, Sunshine. I'm sure they would love seeing you." She tells her son as she grabs her small purse and slings it around her shoulder.

"Jamie?" Bucky asks and Mary nods, he moves to see Jamie and he smiles, "You keeping Esme and Aunt Evelyn safe?" He asks and Jamie nods with a smile.

"Always, Dad." Jamie responds and Bucky nods with a sad smile because he was away from his son.

"I love you." Bucky says to his son, meaning every word.

Jamie smiles softly, "To the moon and back." He responds before the call ends.

Bucky sighs as he runs his hand through his short hair, "I don't like this."

Mary looks up at her husband as she locks the door to their apartment, "Being separated?" She asks and Bucky nods, "I don't like it either." Mary says with a sigh as Bucky wraps his arm around her shoulders.

Bucky looks his wife over with a smile, "You look beautiful, Doll." He says to her and Mary looks up at him with a smile.

"You're not so bad yourself." She teases and Bucky smirks at his wife as they walk the streets of Brooklyn, sirens pass by them as they walk closer to Izzy's restaurant. Bucky opens the door for Mary and she smiles and then Bucky pulls out a small flower bouquet he had managed to keep hidden from Mary's eyesight.

Mary gasps and grins at her husband, "That's so adorable." Izzy says from behind the bar with a smile. "Also old fashioned." She comments and Mary smirks at Bucky.

"I happen to love old-fashioned." Mary states and Bucky smiles at his wife. The two were unsure if they should mention they were already married to Izzy or let her think what she wanted like Yori. "I think we need more old-fashioned things." She adds and Bucky nods in agreement.

"How did you two meet?" Izzy asks as she finishes up cleaning the tables.

Mary and Bucky sit down at the bar and smile at each other, "We grew up together, here in Brooklyn actually." Bucky says to Izzy. "Her brother is my best friend." He states, remembering that Steve is in the past now in terms of the world.

"So how have you two not dated yet? Was it always the wrong time?" Izzy asks with a smile, Mary and Bucky didn't mind the third wheel in all honesty. They liked sharing their history with someone who was willing to listen and ask questions instead of demanding answers. It was a nice change of pace for them. "Especially since all of the fish in the sea came back."

Mary chuckles, "Not really." She answers Izzy's second question. Her amber eyes then look at Bucky's blue eyes and he knows his wife doesn't really know how to answer the questions they're being given. But she'd continue to try.

"Tried the whole online dating thing... it's pretty crazy." Bucky says and Mary chuckles softly with a nod. She remembered when her and Bucky looked through some sites for fun to see what dating was like now.

"A lot of weird pictures." Mary says.

"What kind of weird?" Izzy asks curiously.

"I mean, tiger photos?" Bucky questions and Mary laughs under her breath. "Half the time i don't even know what i'm looking at. It's... it's a lot." He finishes and takes a drink of his beer.

"You sound like my dad." Izzy says with a chuckle and Mary snorts. And then looks between the two of them, "Wait... how old are you two?"

"Hundred and six."

"Hundred and three." Bucky and Mary say together in all seriousness. Izzy breaks out in laughter, causing Mary and Bucky to nervously laugh along with her.

"Your necklace is stunning." Izzy compliments Mary's stone. "Where did you get it?" She asks and Mary looks down at the Soul Stone, then back at Izzy. "Um... It's always been a part of me. I honestly don't remember where i got it." She answers and Izzy nods.

"Shame." Izzy responds and then looks at Bucky, "Sorry for all the questions." She tells them and both Bucky and Mary shake their heads.

"It's fine. We like having someone outside of family to talk to." Mary explains and Izzy nods, "And after all of these years.. it's nice not being alone."

"You were a survivor?" Izzy asks Mary who nods and then looks at Bucky, "And you?"

"Snapped." Bucky states plainly.

"That couldn't have been easy." Izzy says and then looks between the two of them, "You two seem like you've tried dating each other before." She comments and the husband and wife glance at each other.

"We did." Mary says, "But then the snap happened... so we're trying it again." She adds and Bucky nods as he sips on his beer.

"I'm glad." Izzy tells them with a small smile. She then notices Bucky's gloved hands and raises an eyebrow, "What's up with the gloves?" She asks.

Bucky pauses and then looks at Mary who raises her hands in defense. She wasn't going to explain this one for him. "I, umm... have, uh..." He stammers before looking up from his hands, "Poor circulation."

"The poor guy." Mary teases her husband. She then turns towards Izzy and smiles softly, "Do you have games?" She asks with a smile. Izzy nods and pulls out a game, Battleship.

"You like games, James?" Mary asks and Bucky smirks.

"Love 'em." He says back to Mary as Izzy sets Battleship down on the bar.

"I keep games here for the boring shifts. Let me refill your drinks." Izzy explains and the married couple nods as Mary drags over the game and Bucky stares at the cat as it moves it's hand constantly.

Bucky leans over and grabs the cat's hand, making it stop moving and Mary laughs softly as she sets the game up. But the cat's paw swings once Bucky's hand leaves it and it causes him to sigh. Mary laughs again as she sets the pieces up for Battleship. "I haven't played this since Tony was a boy." She says with a smile.

"Yeah?" Bucky asks with a smile, "He send you any recent pictures of Morgan?" He asks his wife and she nods.

"She's getting too big. My baby Stark." Mary says with a smile, she hadn't seen Morgan since Steve had taken the stones back. They were at their lake house. She wanted to plan a visit soon now that she was in the states more. "I hope she never grows out of calling me Grammy Ree." She adds with a laugh, "Like Tony did."

Bucky smiles softly as he listens to his wife, "I don't think Tony will let her." He teases and Mary laughs with a nod.

"Rhodey still calls me Mama Ree, or at least he did before the civil war happened." Mary says and Bucky nods as he remembers hearing Rhodey in Wakanda when Thanos was looming.

As the couple plays Battleship, Mary and Bucky stare at each other. Their hands never leaving each other. "What are you doing?" Bucky asks with a small smile at his wife's playfulness, a side of her that he had missed and was beginning to see again.

"Reading your mind." Mary teases her husband and Bucky visibly stiffens.

Bucky hesitates and sighs, "Please don't." He says softly. He had memories from when he was the Winter Soldier he never wanted to see the light of day. And with Mary having never seen Winter in action, he didn't want her to see that side of him. The dark side that had killed so many.

Mary smirks and rubs circles into her husband's gloved hand with her thumb to calm him down from whatever triggered his thoughts to turn away from their date. "B-8, Alpha." She states with a smile.

Bucky looks down at his side of the board, "Uh... hit!" He says, impressed with his wife as he places his marker down on his little ship.

Mary laughs in victory and then motions to her husband's beer, "Drink." She teases despite knowing he can't get drunk. Bucky rolls his eyes and smiles as he takes a drink. "I'm always amazed by how much alcohol you can intake." She says to him and he nods.

Bucky chuckles and nods, "Yeah." He says as he sets his drink down.

Izzy passes by the couple with small bowls of food for them and then looks at Bucky, "You said she has a brother, what about you?" She asks Bucky.

Mary looks over at Bucky, her heart hurting as she remembers the last time she saw Becky. How frail she was. "I have a sister." Bucky tells Izzy and then looks at Mary, "F-4." He states.

"Miss." Mary states back with a smirk, knowing she was winning. She then looks back and sees Izzy leave the front of the restaurant. She turns back to look at Bucky, "I miss Becky." She says softly, "I miss your parents too." Mary says with a sad smile, "I'll never forget your mother's pot roast." She adds and Bucky chuckles with a smile.

"Or the smell of Pa's cigars that he would sneak, only for Ma to catch him on the back porch." Bucky says with a laugh and then sighs, "How was she...? Towards the end..." He asks about his sister, his precious Becky.

Mary looks up at her husband, "She had lived her life. She had a husband who loved her, a family. And when i came back into her life... she was stunned. But happy." Mary explains as best she can without tears falling down her face. "She always spoke about you when i would visit, that would be most of our time talking... was about you and Becca."

Bucky looks up, trying to fight back the tears he knew were trying to form in his eyes. He then looks down at his board, "Um... D-5." He mutters softly as he clears his throat. "How'd she like finding out we named Becca after her?" He asks with a small smile.

Mary chuckles, glancing down at her pieces, "Miss." She tells him and then nods, "She was shocked. She thought we would've named Becca after our Ma's." She tells him and Bucky chuckles as he takes a swig of his beer.

"Winnie is, and I'm glad we named Becca after Becky." Bucky says and Mary nods in agreement. Their three children were named perfectly in their eyes. Becca fit her name extremely well, as did Winnie and Jamie. All three had their nicknames and then their parental nicknames.

Mary nods, she then looks at her husband, "I'm glad we're spending time with Yori.." She says and Bucky nods slowly, "I could feel how hard it's been since his son died." She mutters and then leans back in her chair.

"Luna.." He whispers, seeing her amber eyes glow slightly and tears fill her eyes. "What entered your mind?"

"Losing Winnie.... it was one of the hardest things i ever experienced." Mary mumbles, "You know when your spouse dies... you're a widower." She mutters and Bucky nods, holding his wife's hand. "Or when your parents die, you're an orphan." She stammers and she wipes her eyes, "There's no word to be called when your child dies." She whispers, "And i've experienced that pain... the suffocating, mind numbing pain." She pauses, trying to not break down further. "It's the worst thing that could happen."

Bucky nods as his wife finishes her  thought process. "I remember that night i found you... i could smell the blood from the birth... but when i looked around your room, Winnie wasn't there... i had barely any time to come to terms with you having her... let alone losing her." He says as he feels his throat close up as the memories of that night flood his mind. He stands up from his seat, causing Mary to jump slightly. He looks at his wife and squeezes her hand. "I-." He stops himself and Mary places her hands on his temples but he grips her hands before they touch his head. "Mary, don't." He says.

"James, you are my husband." Mary reminds him, "For better or for worse is what we vowed." She points out, "I need to see. Let me in." She whispers and Bucky breathes out shakily. His hands let go of hers and she places her fingers on his temples. Amber wisps seep into his mind and they both close their eyes as Bucky's most recent memory flashes through Mary's mind. She sees Winter attack the men with incredible skill, she watches with tears as Winter aims a gun at Yori's son who was only trying to get away, pleading with Winter that he wouldn't say anything, that he didn't see anything. Mary jolts briefly as she watches Winter pull the trigger of his gun without so much as a second to think it through.

Bucky breathes heavily as he relives his memory. The fear gripping his entire being of Mary finally seeing the destruction Winter caused for so long weighing so heavily on him. "I killed him." Bucky whispers, guilt eating him alive as a tear falls from his face. "I killed Yori's son."

Mary shakes her head, "No... Winter did. You are not him. You could never be him." She tells him as Bucky leads his wife out of the restaurant. "My Sarge..." She whispers as he pushes her against the wall of the alleyway and holds her tightly. His breathing is uneven as he breaks down. His face buried in her hair and neck. "Nothing Winter did will ever change my love for you." She whispers to him.

Bucky looks at his wife as she wipes tears from his cheeks, "Why? I- He did horrible things. He tortured people, he nearly killed Steve... He almost killed you. How can you possibly still love me?"

Mary takes her husband's face into her hands and makes him look at her as her eyes glow bright amber. "Because you are my laughter, my love, my protector, my comforter. You are the man i vowed to love until my dying breath and after. You are the man that stayed by my side as i cried my heart out after Ma's funeral. I love you because you gave me three incredible gifts in our children, you built us a home. You constantly hide your pain and suffering so i don't feel it." Mary lists off reasons why she loves Bucky and it makes him smile as tears still escape his eyes. "Nothing you ever do will keep me from loving you, Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes." She tells him.

Bucky smiles weakly, "We did make three fantastic kids." He says and Mary laughs softly as tears fall from her own amber eyes. He starts to say something else, but Mary and Bucky's Kimoyo beads begin to glow and vibrate with an incoming call.

"It's... Winnie..." Mary says in stunned surprise but she wipes her eyes as she opens the beads up for the call.

"Hi Win." Bucky says to his daughter, he chuckles weakly at Winnie massive curls in the way of the beads. "Win, you're hair..." he says softly and Winnie huffs in a panic as she flips her head over and gathers her curls into a bun quickly.

"Daddy, Momma, you need to see this." Winnie says as she turns her beads hologram angle, "May's getting it up on the TV." She states and then Mary and Bucky both stare at the hologram. They see Peter holding Becca on the couch tightly, slightly rocking her to help calm her down. Their eldest daughter was visibly upset and unsure of the announcement being made.

"Unrest, in the recent events, have left us vulnerable. Every day Americans feel it. We love heroes who put their lives on the line to defend Earth, we also need a hero to defend this country." The Congressman who Becca and Mary had met says in front of DC's Capitol Hill. Bucky hesitates and Mary can already feel her blood boiling. "We need a real person who embodies America's greatest values. We need someone to inspire us again, someone who can be a symbol for all of us." He continues and Mary can see Becca beginning to lose it as Peter holds her tightly. "So, on behalf of the Department of Defense and our Commander-in-Chief, it is with great honor that we announce here today that the United States of America has a new hero. Join me in welcoming your new Captain America!"

Mary's amber eyes glow brighter than they've ever had before as she watches the new 'Captain America' walk out with Becca's shield strapped around his arm. She was fuming at what they had tricked Becca into doing. The shield was to be held temporarily at the Smithsonian until Becca came of age and was ready to take on the mantle of her uncle's legacy.

This imposter was the bane of Mary's existence in this one, singular moment.

Becca was sobbing in Peter's arms as he tried to console his girlfriend. She was angry, she was betrayed, she was scarred. Becca had been told that the shield would be hers. That she had made the right choice by waiting until she was out of high school to pick up the mantle.

"Momma... Daddy... What's gonna happen?" Winnie asks her parents, "Is Becca still gonna be Captain America?" Their youngest daughter was in shock and was angry for her sister.

"I don't know, Pooh Bear." Mary stammers out as Bucky holds his wife tightly. "But... Let your father and I get home and we'll call you right back, okay?"

"Okay, Momma.." Winnie says as her head turns to look at Becca on the couch who was wailing into Peter's shirt and he gripped her tightly. The boyfriend looked pissed beyond belief at what the people had done. They had promised his girlfriend, his flower, one thing and went behind the backs of everyone close to Steve to do this.

The American government had betrayed the Rogers/Barnes family and Steve's legacy with this imposter.

And Mary was going to have her voice heard.

No matter what it took.
