38. On a Very Special Episode... Prt 2
Bucky sits beside Darcy at a table after she had told him to stop standing in the corner like a creeper. Woo had gone to get coffee for the four of them as Monica tries to figure out a way back into the Hex. The Captain had a white board behind her filled with theories of how to get back inside now that she had been expelled by both Wanda and Mary.
"Okay. Okay, I've got it." Monica says as she taps her hand with the marker. She turns around to look at Bucky and Darcy, "What i need is a 10,000 pound fallout shelter comprised of lead for photons, cadmium for neutrons, tantalum for seismic blasts.... on wheels." She sighs with a slight frown on her face. Darcy and Bucky share a look before turning back to Monica. "And then, I would be able to safely re enter Westview. Right?"
"Yes. Theoretically." Darcy comments.
"I'd add Vibranium to the list of what you need." Bucky adds, "It absorbs the vibrations of whatever comes into contact with it." He explains and both Monica and Darcy look at him with shocked expressions. The White Wolf simply shrugs, "You live in Wakanda for two plus years, their way of life becomes your own."
Monica takes in what Bucky says and then glances at the tv screen, seeing Mary on it briefly with the twins. She's understanding what this means to him, to get Mary back. She nods at Bucky's input, then looks at Darcy, "I can work with theoretically." She states.
Woo comes in with the tray of four coffees and quickly asks, "What'd I miss?"
"Twins aged up to ten." Bucky and Darcy say in unison.
"Holy Christmas. At this rate, they'll be empty nesters by dinner time." Woo comments and looks at Bucky, "Your kid age this fast?" He asks.
Bucky chuckles, shaking his head but then thinking about how Becca aged. "Becca had a different way of growing up." He explains, not forgetting that Woo only said kid, not kids, the world didn't know about the other Barnes children. And Mary and Bucky wanted to keep it like that until they decided to put them into school. Which they had already begun looking at schools for Jamie and Winnie as Becca prepped to go back to Midtown soon. "It wasn't white picket fences and tire swings for her like we wanted." He states.
Woo wants to ask further but Monica cuts in with her own conversation as her mind was focused on getting back into the Hex. "I know an aerospace engineer who'd be up for this challenge." She says but Darcy steps in.
"But i can't guarantee the Hex won't just mind-wipe you as you go in." Darcy points out and Bucky nods.
"Take it from someone who's been wiped before. Avoid it." He tells Monica.
Monica hesitates as she glances at Bucky then looks at Darcy as she quickly texts her friend. "Wait. What's a Hex?"
"Oh, um, it's what i'm calling the anomaly because of its hexagonal shape. It's starting to catch on." Darcy explains and Bucky shakes his head with a slight smile playing on his lips. Monica glances at Woo who shakes his head slightly. Darcy then looks at Monica again, "You really want to go back in there? After everything she'd put you through?" She asks.
Monica nods, "Yeah. Yes, i do." She answers. "And if i don't go in, Sergeant Barnes will." She teases.
"Damn right." Bucky states, "I might have better luck getting in at this point." He adds with a shrug.
Woo in the meantime had walked over to the tv screen and motions to the twins, "Have we identified these minors yet? Or the newborns?" He asks.
"Oh, Wanda's twins are hers." Monica explains, "Everything might look fake in the TV, but everything in there is real."
"But Wanda manipulates people's perceptions, makes them hallucinate." Woo says.
"Yeah, that's her whole bag." Darcy adds. Bucky sighs as he crosses his arms. He doesn't like hearing them talk about Wanda in a negative light, but right now, it was all they had. "If all the sets and props and wardrobe were solid matter, that would mean she's wielding an insane amount of power."
"Far exceeding anything she's displayed in the past." Woo adds.
Bucky tilts his head and cringes slightly, "She could've taken Thanos out on her own if he hadn't initiated the blitz." He counters. "I was there." He points out, briefly reminding them about the man in the room with them who had been bounced from fight to fight to fight over the span of eighty- almost ninety- years now.
"Nobody else came close." Monica adds to Bucky's statement. The sergeant nods in agreement and happy that someone else understood what he was saying.
"Well, i'd argue that Captain Marvel came close." Woo counters back to them and Bucky briefly sees a look of sadness on Monica's face before she composes herself again.
"Her powers came from an infinity stone, too, right?" Darcy asks and then looks at Bucky, "And what was up with Doctor Barnes in the video that Hayward showed at the briefing?" She asks and Bucky hesitates as all eyes turn to him for an explanation.
Bucky sighs and he looks down at his gloved metal hand, twisting his wedding band on his left ring finger. "We've kept this silent because if the wrong people knew, then there would be people after Mary. And there's a lot of people who don't want that happening." He states, taking a breath before looking up at them all. "During the battle with Thanos, the one that brought everyone back. What people don't know is that those that remained after the snap went on a mission to retrieve the infinity stones. One of those stones was the Soul Stone." He begins his explanation. He closes his eyes as he remembers seeing his wife appear in front of Tony with her bright amber eyes. Gone were the hazel eyes he had adored, replaced with the amber color of the Soul Stone that he now loved looking at. The shimmer of wisps behind her eyes when Mary's powers would be used subconsciously in any way. He adored how Mary's amber eyes glowed amber when she exuded her new power with confidence.
When he opens his eyes, they're still looking at him, waiting with baited breath for his answer as to why Mary was surrounded by amber as Wanda was with her scarlet wisps.
"Mary sacrificed her life for that very mission in exchange for the Soul Stone." Bucky says, "To bring everyone back. She gave her life for every single person who died that day." He tells them and Monica gasps slightly because she was one of those people along with Bucky who had been dusted. Darcy and Woo had both survived and had lived through the five years Mary and the other survivors had lived through.
"How the hell is she alive then?" Darcy asks bluntly. "Or did Wanda bring her back?" She asks and Bucky's eyes are wide with Darcy's theory. He knew it was false, but what if it had some truth to it? The possibilities made his mind spin but he needed to continue his explanation.
"She was brought back to life by the Soul Stone we believe. Because she now wields the stone." Bucky states. "Mary's soul is now the pendant she wears on her neck." He points out, motioning to a still they had captured of Mary in the most recent episode airing and the pendant was resting on her neck as it had since the first episode. "Mary is the Soul Stone now. Her powers are untapped and not fully developed. But she's learning."
"Could she pose a threat to anyone?" Woo asks the logical question anyone would ask. He was concerned that Mary now having powers would pose a serious threat with the power she wields in her and in the connections she has with powerful people.
Bucky hesitates, but nods, "Yes, but that was always a question. The people, her family. They're powerful people. Her connections have always placed a target on her back. She just never cared because she would defend her family until the day she dies." He tells them bluntly. "And she did die for her family." He adds.
Monica nods, looking at the board by the table with all the information on the Hex and the people inside. Her eyes linger on Mary's picture, seeing the pendant and then looks up to the top row of pictures and walks over to the board. She pulls one down, "Darcy? What was that you were saying about props and sets and..."
"Wardrobe?" Darcy finishes and Monica nods.
Monica looks up from the picture she has in her hand and looks at the three of them around her, "Where's the lab?" She asks with a smile.
A few minutes later the four of them are walking into a section of the lab that holds Monica's seventies clothes. Bucky glances at the few agents that walk past him that eye him but he only stares back before turning his head forward. "What are we looking for?" Woo asks.
"That." Monica states as she walks up to her clothes and touches them.
Darcy's eyes widen briefly, "Oh, man, are we being mind controlled to see that right now?" She asks and Bucky raises an eyebrow at her, "Not- I-." She stumbles over her words embarrassingly and then clears her throat.
"Jeepers Creepers." Woo states as he looks at the seventies clothes in front of them.
Monica shakes her head as her old clothes are scanned. "Ooh, no. They're real, all right." She then walks over to Woo and takes his gun out of his holster, "Can i borrow this?" She asks and then shoots at her clothes. Darcy and Jimmy jump in shock and cover their ears while Bucky just stands beside Darcy with his arms crossed.
"Good aim." Bucky comments to Monica who smiles briefly at the sergeant.
Darcy gasps when she looks at the clothes that don't show any form of damage. "Whoa!"
Woo holsters his gun and walks up to pick up a smashed bullet off the floor. He turns to look at Monica, "You had a bulletproof vest on when you went inside, didn't you?"
Monica nods and walks up to her pants, "Those pants are eight-seven percent Kevlar." She states, a smile forming on her face as her theory was proven right. "It's not an illusion. Wanda is rewriting reality."
"And Mary is helping as muscle to keep it that way." Bucky says and Monica nods, pointing at Bucky indicating he's right.
"If she can change things as they go into the Hex-"
"Ah! You called it the Hex." Darcy cuts Monica off.
"What happens is we send something in that requires no change?" Monica asks. Bucky's eyes widen slightly at the new theory Monica proposed to them.
"Send me." Bucky says without hesitation.
"Sit, Sparky, sit. Good dog." Billy says with a treat in his hand as he teaches his and Tommy's new puppy. Wanda, Mary and Tommy sit on the couch and watch the young boy with wide smiles. "Speak!" Billy tells Sparky and the puppy responds by barking. "Nice, Sparky." He rewards the puppy with another treat. "Now, spin!" Billy states with a smile as he motions his hand in a circle and Sparky follows, spinning in a circle. "Good boy!" Billy rewards the puppy.
"Oh! Well done!" Mary applauds Billy, as does Wanda and Tommy.
"Bravo, Billy!" Wanda says with a proud smile on her face as she watches her son. Billy picks up Sparky as Wanda continues, "You weren't so bad either, Sparky." She teases the puppy.
"That was radical." Tommy says to his brother. "Where's Dad? We gotta show Dad!" He exclaims and stands up from the couch. The boys then move towards the kitchen but Wanda stops them.
"Oh, he's... He's at work." Wanda says and Mary looks over at Wanda. The boys then stop and turn around to look at their mother and aunt.
"Huh?" Tommy asks.
"It's Saturday..." Billy mutters confusedly.
Wanda shakes her head, "No, it's not. It's Monday." She states quickly.
"This morning was Saturday." Tommy mutters and Mary hesitates, glancing at Wanda.
"There must've been an emergency at the office..." Mary starts and Wanda nods, picking it up.
"And your father had to go in. End of story." Wanda states. The twins glance at each other skeptically and Wanda knows she needs another explanation. A better one. "Look, he just... He needed a distraction."
"From what?" Tommy asks.
"From us?" Billy asks.
Mary gasps and shakes her head as Wanda and herself stand from their seats on the couch and rush to the twins. "No! Never!" Mary exclaims.
"No way! No!" Wanda exclaims. She then wraps her hands around the twins' shoulders and leads them towards the couch as Mary takes Sparky into her arms and sits on the adjacent seat. "Sometimes your dad and I aren't on the same page." She says as they sit on the couch. "But that's just temporary."
The boys hesitate but nod and Mary smiles softly at them, "Like the two of you, you might fight over toys. But he's always going to be your brother." Mary says as she looks at Billy, then turns to Tommy, "And he's always going to be yours."
"Because family is forever." Wanda adds and Mary nods in agreement.
"Forever and ever." Mary agrees.
"Do you have a brother, Aunt Mary?" Tommy asks his aunt and Mary hesitates, trying to find an answer for her nephew.
"I do." Mary responds as she glances at Wanda briefly. "He's far away from here, and that makes me sad sometimes." She tells the twins and then Sparky begins to bark and jumps out of Mary's arms. Running towards the door.
Hey, Sparky, what's up, boy?" Tommy asks Sparky who keeps barking at the door, wanting to be let out.
"Something's scaring him." Billy determines as Sparky growls at the door.
Above them, Wanda and Mary can hear something flying overhead. Their eyes widen as they stand up and walk towards the door. "Stay here." Wanda tells her sons.
"We'll be right back." Mary says to the twins as she and Wanda walk out of the door. Wanda opens the door and Sparky dashes outside. The boys quickly follow after Sparky to make sure he's okay.
Bucky stands beside Hayward after being told by Monica that she had a better and safer plan of action for them to use. Monica controls a drone from the eighties as Bucky watches. He wanted to be sent into the Hex but even he knew that wasn't the best course of action for this. They didn't want to risk Bucky being brainwashed by the Hex.
"I know this is tech from the eighties, but can we sharpen the visuals?" Hayward asks, the agents around him and Monica as she flies the drone.
The screen glitches and Monica flies the drone closer to the Maximoff home. "Working on it." She says and then the home comes into view on the screen. "Maximoff located." Monica says.
"Well done." Hayward says, glancing back at where Woo and Darcy sit at her desk, watching the program.
"We can't see the drone on the broadcast." Woo tells Hayward. "Wanda's framing it out of the shot."
Darcy glances back at Woo, "Just like all the jump cuts. Wanda decides what makes it onto her show and what doesn't."
Hayward watches on the drone screen that Monica has as she controls it and Wanda, Mary and the twins come into closer view. "And here we go. You're up."
Bucky watches as Monica begins to speak, "Wanda, this is Captain Monica Rambeau. Can you hear me?" She asks through the headset she has. "Doctor Barnes, can you hear me as well?" Bucky watches as the image of Wanda and Mary gets closer. Wanda tilts her head slightly and Bucky can feel this won't end well. "I just want to talk. That's it."
Wanda's head tilts slightly further and her eyes begin to glow scarlet, Mary's eyes begin to glow amber at the same time and Bucky knows it's time to call it. But he's not the one in charge. "No joy." Hayward mutters and then nods to one of his agents and Bucky looks at the director.
"What was that?" The husband asks the director. But he gets no response.
"Wait, my controls aren't working. Reconnect patch." Monica says, trying to regain control of her drone.
"Disregard. Take the shot." Hayward says.
Bucky and Monica's eyes widen. "What? No. The drone isn't armed." Monica says as she looks back at the screen and then at Bucky. Her eyes indicating that she had no knowledge of Hayward's plan. And Bucky knew she meant it.
"Take the shot!" Hayward commends.
"No!" Bucky shouts. As he hears a weapon being shot and then the screen Monica has goes static.
Monica stands up, pissed at what Hayward just did. "What did you do?!" She exclaims.
"That was my wife!" Bucky shouts and a few agents draw their weapons. "Not only was that my wife, but that was the advisor to the Wakandan King." He snaps, "You don't want to piss off the Wakandans any more than you already have, Hayward. You won't like the outcome."
"There's a breach, sir!" An agent tells Hayward as the sirens go off in the facility and Bucky looks around. His vibranium hand clenching in it's glove as he looks at Monica. They all then grab their jackets and rush outside to the Hex.
Bucky is the first to arrive due to his enhanced speed but he stays near the back as the cars drive around him and other agents run past him. Woo and Darcy stand beside Bucky towards the back of the crowd as agents with rifles aim their shots at the Hex where the breach is happening. Hayward and Monica step forward in the front of the group as a figure appears to exit the Hex.
Wanda steps out of the Hex, dragging the drone behind her that is surrounded by red and amber wisps. Bucky's eyes widen when he doesn't see his wife exit behind her. He wants to see his wife. And if Wanda could exit the Hex, then why wasn't Mary.
"Is this yours?" Wanda questions as she tosses the drone back at Hayward. The riflemen aim their guns at Wanda, her chest covered in green dots.
"The missile was just a precaution." Hayward says in a bold faced lie, "You can hardly blame us, Wanda."
"Oh, I think i can." Wanda retorts, her voice laced with hatred for the man in front of her. "This will be your only warning. Stay out of my home." She snaps to Hayward and then her eyes fall on Bucky for the first time. Wanda's heart clenches when she sees Mary's husband standing beside some people. But she knows she needs to make herself clear as if Bucky wasn't within those people around her. "You don't bother me. I won't bother you."
"I wish it could be that simple. You've taken an entire town hostage. You've kidnapped the Wakandan Advisor." Hayward states, finally calling Mary by her newest title. Bucky's eyes narrow as Hayward uses his wife as a means to stop Wanda.
"I'm not the one with the guns, Director." Wanda responds cooly.
"But you are the one in control, right?" Bucky calls out to Wanda as he pushes through the agents around him.
Wanda hesitates for the first time and looks at Bucky as Monica moves to stand beside him. "She's safer with me, Bucky..." She tells him, trying to also convince herself of that fact. "I can help her."
"Isn't that for her to decide?" Bucky asks, "Wanda, I know this... all of this... isn't what it was supposed to be." He tells her, walking closer to Wanda than anyone else has dared to try. "I need my wife back... our kids need their mother."
Wanda looks at Bucky, "You're welcome to enter the town, Bucky. Becca, Winnie and Jamie as well." She tells him but Bucky knows she isn't letting any of the townspeople go.
"Wanda..." Monica mutters and any form of connection the two Avengers had was shattered as Wanda's eyes moved over to Monica and away from Bucky.
"You're still here." Wanda mutters as a red wisp ball forms in her hand.
"Wanda, I didn't know the drones were armed." Monica says, trying Bucky's tactic of walking slowly towards Wanda. "But you know that, don't you?" Monica mutters. "A town full of civilians. And you, a telepath, brought a SWORD Agent into your home." She explains as Wanda looks briefly between Bucky and Monica. "You trusted me to help Mary deliver your babies." She adds. "On some level, Wanda, you know i am an ally. I wanna help you."
"We all do." Bucky states, his all meaning the Avengers and those back home in Wakanda that Wanda felt closest too. He in no way meant the people here other than Woo, Monica and Darcy.
"How? What could you possibly have to offer me?" Wanda asks as her fingers dance around the red wisps in her hand.
"What do you want?" Monica asks, truly asking that question with no personal gain behind any of it.
"I have what i want." Wanda snaps and then Bucky notices the slight movement of her eyes to look at Hayward, "And no one will ever take it from me.... again." She snaps and then raises her hand, her wisps then glow brighter and Bucky glances around to see the riflemen being infiltrated by Wanda's magic. Their weapons then turn on Hayward as Wanda turns around. Hayward is screaming for them to lower their weapons but they're under Wanda's control.
"Wanda!" Bucky shouts and he steps forward, grabbing her wrist. While everyone is distracted by Hayward and the turned riflemen, Wanda turns around to look at Bucky. "Is she happy?"
Wanda hesitates, she knows Mary isn't truly happy unless Bucky and everyone else is by her side. But right now, Wanda knew Mary needed to be in the Hex. "She is. And she's protected from people like him." She states as the two walk closer to the Hex.
"Wakanda could protect her just as well, Wanda." Bucky says. "That's our home."
Wanda sighs, "I love her like a sister. I will protect her." She states. "Because i sense a power in her... it's sentient. It wants power."
Bucky hesitates, "The Stone?"
Wanda nods. "It awakened when it sensed my power. I'm truly sorry for that. But i can fix it. I can put it to sleep again, i just need more time. Mary needs more time." She tells Bucky. The husband was aware that the stone was sentient because of what Nebula had told him before the Guardians left.
Bucky hesitates and then looks at the Hex behind Wanda, "Can i see her? Does she know what's happening to her and what you're doing?" He asks and Wanda smiles weakly.
"I'll make an exception for you to see her in the Hex after all of them leave." She tells him, motioning with her head towards the agents still panicking. Wanda then looks back at Bucky, "And yes, she knows what's happening and agreed to my help, as well as offered her help with me." She explains, "When she touches my hand... i'm calm, i feel at peace, like i didn't witness the loss of my beloved." Wanda says as tears form in her eyes. Bucky understands what she feels, he's felt it from Mary and Steve all their lives.
He places his hand on her arm and Wanda looks up at him, "Make sure we don't lose her, Wanda." Bucky tells her and Wanda knows what he means. To not let the Stone's sentient being takeover Mary's mind and body.
Wanda nods in agreement, "I won't let anything happen to her." She vows to Bucky. Bucky nods but then looks at the Hex once more.
"You know this can't last forever." Bucky tells her and Wanda looks at him.
"It'll last however long i want it to last, Bucky." Wanda tells him flat out and Bucky knows that could be dangerous for the townspeople and for Wanda herself if any other Avengers caught wind of this.
"Wanda." Bucky says but Wanda turns around to face the Hex. She uses her wisps and grabs onto the Hex, opening it up. The Hex then turns scarlet red and the agents that were controlled, no longer being controlled. Wanda then looks back at Bucky with a nod then turns and walks through the Hex with ease.
Bucky steps backwards and looks up at the Hex as it turns scarlet all around the perimeter.
Wanda, Mary, Timmy and Billy walk around the neighborhood as they call out for Sparky. Mary looks around the area as the boys run ahead of their mother and aunt. "Sparky! Come on, boy!" Tommy shouts for his puppy.
"Sparky! Sparky!" Billy shouts with his hands cupped around his mouth.
"Here, boy! Sparky!" Tommy calls again as the mailman passes by the four of them.
"Hey, what's the trouble, little dudes?" The mailman asks the twins.
"We can't find our dog." Billy says.
"Ah, don't worry. He's sure to turn up. Your mom won't let him get far." He tells them, Mary glances at Wanda who has a confused look on her face as the mailman looks at the two women. "Ma'ams." He greets them.
"I don't know where he could've gone." Wanda says as she and Mary continue their search for Sparky with the boys.
The boys continue to call for their puppy when they reach Agnes's home and hear rustling in the bushes. They gasp and call for Sparky once more but Agnes is the one that comes out of the bushes.
Mary gasps as she sees Agnes holding a small body in her arms wrapped in a towel. Wanda's facial expression falls instantly when she sees Agnes holding what they can only assume is Sparky. "I- I didn't wanna come until i'd wrapped him up." Agnes says as she steps out of the bushes and onto the sidewalk.
"What happened to him?" Mary asks as she and Wanda step in front of the boys and walk slightly towards Agnes.
"Found him in my azalea bushes. Don't know how many leaves he ate. I didn't find him until it was too late." Agnes explains as tears fill Mary's eyes as she and Wanda look past the towel to confirm it is Sparky. Wanda looks at her twins as Mary places her hands on each of their shoulders. Amber wisps float off Mary's fingers slightly. "Tommy, Billy, I'm so sorry."
Billy and Tommy sniffle and then look towards each other and nod. Both Mary and Wanda gasp because they know what the twins are about to do. "Wait." Wanda and Mary say in unison.
"Don't. Don't." Wanda says to her boys.
"Don't what?" Tommy asks as Billy sniffles again.
"Don't age yourselves up." Mary says for Wanda and the mom nods.
Wanda places her hands on her boys' shoulders as Mary removes hers. "The urge to run from this feeling is powerful. Auntie Mary and I know." Wanda says with a sad nod of her head, Mary nods as well. Her amber eyes flicker briefly in remembrance.
"It's too sad." Tommy says with a sniffle. "You can fix anything, Mom. Fix the dead." Tommy mutters and Mary hesitates.
Wanda looks at her sons with confusion, "What?" She asks, "No."
"You can do that?" Agnes asks but Mary looks at her as does Wanda.
"I am trying to tell you that there are rules in life, okay? We can't rush aging just because it's convenient." Wanda chuckles dryly as she looks at Mary and her friend nods in agreement. "And we can't reverse death. No matter how sad it makes us. Okay? Some things are forever."
"You said family is forever." Billy reminds his mom.
"He his family." Tommy mutters. "Bring him back, Mom. Or have Auntie Mary bring him back..." He asks, looking at his aunt and Mary rests her hand on his head as she shakes her head.
"Bring who back?" Vision's voice appears. The husband and father takes in the scene he's walked in on. He sees the sad looks on everyone's faces. He notices that Agnes is holding a small body in a towel. And it clicks in his head what's happened. Vision then walks over to his sons and pulls them into his embrace with his arm. "Oh, boys. Come here." He whispers to them.
Later that night, Mary is sitting in her home, cleaning up the toys left behind by James Jr as she hears a knock on her door. It was well past the hours that people should be awake or outside. She was hesitant as she made her way towards the door.
When she opens the door, she gasps in shock as her eyes suddenly flash bright amber and scarlet at once. She breathes heavily as her vision clears from the sudden bursts of power and energy she feels. Her head hurts as she remembers what she had forgotten under Wanda's aid. Mary blinks her eyes and looks at the person in front of her.
"James?" Mary mutters in confusion as she stares at her husband in eighties male clothing.
Bucky smiles wide at his wife, his her his famous half smile. "Honey, I'm home." He tells her with a chuckle.
