35. Now In Color Prt 1
A/N: I highly recommend listening to "Who Am I"
from the Wandavision score during Reality, not Sitcom.
I feel like it adds depth to those scenes
and the emotions Bucky is going through to feel more real.
With love, Red
Bucky eyed the agents surrounding him carefully as they aimed their rifles at him. His body was covered in red dots. But he didn't care about any of that. His sole purpose of being here, in New Jersey of all places, was to get his wife back. His precious Luna. Like a wolf, he couldn't lead his pack, his family, without her. He was missing half of himself when he found out something had happened to her.
These eighty years almost had taken its toll on his soul. But Mary was his healer. His comfort. Because there were still nightmares that haunted him, memories of his past as Winter. Becca had them too. There were nights where Mary would find him on the floor as the day broke. She could hear the jingle of his three dog tags on his chest as he would sit up quickly and try to get a grip on reality.
Because though the trigger words were no longer in his mind thanks to Shuri, his past still haunted him. The PTSD was very real. No amount of high level tech Wakanda had could wipe that from him completely.
The only person that could cure him of his trauma, was currently trapped in a sitcom world with three other Avengers if he remembered right. He hadn't heard anything about Pietro, but Bucky knew the male Maximoff was with Mary and Wanda that fateful day. Steve was concerned for everyone involved, he was close with Pietro and he cared for Wanda like a little sister. And Vision was a comrade that could not be replaced by anyone, no matter how hard some might try.
Vision was more than a machine to the Rogers-Barnes family.
He was their family.
And Bucky knew that he needed to figure out what exactly was going on. He had tried to wait it out and let Darcy be the mole, the double agent, but he couldn't get over not being anywhere near his wife and not knowing what was going on. It might seem unhealthy from an outside perspective, but for Mary and Bucky. They were each other's lifelines. Without the other, they would fall apart. Mary did when she witnessed Bucky turn to dust after Thanos snapped his fingers.
Bucky had no idea how she felt during all those years, those previous decades, of being alone, isolated.
Abandoned.
The word hit Bucky like a truck going full speed but there was nothing he could do about it, he knew Mary had felt like this numerous times and pushed through. But he was feeling that loss now more than ever. And there wasn't any way he could get to her. No possible way to contact her that he knew of. And he had no visuals of her.
Mary was surrounded by unknowns and that terrified Bucky.
Not because she couldn't handle herself, oh no. He never underestimated his wife like other people did. He knew her too well to do that.
It was because everything surrounding her was unknown, and with her powers just having started the bare minimum of training before Wanda needed her, Bucky had no idea how the Soul Stone would react to any of this happening.
Because Bucky knew something that Mary didn't about the powerful Infinity Stone.
Something Nebula warned Bucky about before she and the other Guardians left Earth.
The Soul Stone had a conscience. It was sentient. And it was greedy for souls to reside in its pocket dimension of the Soul World.
Bucky had no idea if the stone was reacting to this new power. But he knew one thing was for sure that Nebula told him. The Stone, while it was sentient, was still Mary's soul in tangible form. So it was very possible that the greed the stone possessed would sleep, become dormant. That it would let Mary use her new powers how she pleased and not take over.
But if anything caused the stone harm or if it sensed danger, it would wake.
And Bucky was pleading that it didn't wake up.
So there he stood, in the entrance of the SWORD command tent in front of Westview. Demanding where he could find his wife. And when no one answered, he simply asked once more, "I'm only going to ask this once more." He says as he looks around the room, "Where the hell is my wife?"
Darcy moved to speak but someone beat her to it. "You don't get to ask any questions, Mr. Barnes." The director of SWORD said from behind the former Winter Soldier. "In fact, i should have you arrested for trespassing and injuring agents." Hayward adds with a smirk on his face.
Bucky lowers his head and scoffs slightly with a half smile as he turned around and faced the man responsible for most of this he believed already. "I don't think you want to do that." He states.
"Oh? And why's that?" Hayward asks, still smug despite the WWII vet in front of him that was also an ex assassin. The most famed assassin in the world now.
Bucky chuckles and walks closer to Hayward. The center was silent as the two men threatened one another. The agents surrounding Bucky still had their weapons drawn and aimed but they were unsure of what to do in this moment. "Because i'm not here to get my wife back. I'm here to get the Royal Advisor to the Wakandan King back. And with that said, i believe you owe me and all of Wakanda, the proof that my wife is unharmed in this sh- show." Bucky states plainly and straight to the point.
He was done messing around, taking shortcuts and letting other people tell him what was happening when they could. He wanted his wife back and he was going to have her in his arms once again.
When Hayward doesn't answer instantly, Bucky knows he's won the verbal fight. He hadn't always been good with using his words, during his time as Winter, it was better to use his actions than words. Hydra wanted compliance and submission, which in turn trained him not to speak unless spoken to. But now, it was better for him to use his words rather than fists. He was still a wanted man in nearly every country on Earth, but that was hopefully changing within the next month or two with the President and U.N. petitioning to pardon him. There would obviously be rules he'd need to follow, but Mary was handling all of that being as the Barnes family were now residents of Wakanda and she was Wakanda's advisor.
"See for yourself then." Hayward says through gritted teeth. But before Bucky can step out of reach from Hayward, the director grabs Bucky's arm and leans closely to Bucky's ear. "But one step out of line and your ass is mine" He snaps and Bucky smirks.
"Oh, really? Because if you touch me, or your agents, the Wakandan King be so far up your ass you'll be meowing like a cat." Bucky threatens with a smile, "Understand?"
Woo and Darcy just stare in awe of Bucky as they stand at her desk in the corner of the tent command center. They had never seen Bucky in person or in action before and they were awestruck by the man that was well over one hundred years old. He acted and fought like a well oiled machine. And to many governments, he was one.
Bucky's blue eyes scanned around and found Darcy. When she met his eyes, she knew he needed all the information they had on everything. Even if telling him was against the SWORD way or code.
"I'll tell you everything you need to know, Sergeant Barnes." Darcy says from her desk and Woo's eyes widen as he looks at her. "The second episode finished airing not too long ago. You can watch both of them."
"Doctor Lewis... what are you doing?" Woo asks quietly.
Darcy shrugs, "Helping a man reunite with his wife." She says simply. And in the corner of her eye she could see how pissed and fuming Hayward was, but with the threat of an entire nation that is more advanced than anywhere else in the world looming with every step Bucky Barnes took, Hayward could do nothing but comply unless he wanted a war that he was not prepared to win.
"Count me in then." Woo says and motions for Bucky to follow the two of them. "This way, Sergeant Barnes."
When Bucky steps towards the two, he smiles softly and then looks between Woo and Darcy as they walk into the white board room where all the information they have is being displayed. "It's just Bucky." He comments as Darcy closes the doors and seals them. She didn't want ears listening in. "No one calls me Sergeant Barnes anymore."
Woo raises an eyebrow in confusion. Wasn't Bucky a Sergeant in the second world war? He earned the ranking. He deserved to be called by it more than his newest name of Winter Soldier. "With all due respect, you deserve to be called by your ranking."
Bucky's eyes widen slightly, no one outside of his family and the Avengers ever really took the time to tell him certain things. Mary was the only person he allowed to call him James. That was sacred to both parties, but Sergeant Barnes was something he wasn't used to being called anymore. But it was his ranking. And he had earned it.
Darcy smiles softly, "I'm sorry i couldn't be of more help, Mr Barnes." She says then pats her head, "Bucky, sorry... You're just not someone i ever thought i'd meet." She says, slightly freaking out about the person in front of her. "I'm a huge fan of your wife. We actually know each other."
Bucky nods with a slight smile at Darcy, and he shakes his head, "It's all right. I'm not used to being around most people that aren't family or teammates now." He says, "Or people trying to arrest me." He adds and then his eyes fully take in the white board of information. His eyes scan every ounce of information in the room and his heart aches as he sees Mary's picture on the board beside Wanda and Vision. He stepped closer to the board and raised his metal hand, placing it on the photo of his wife. The grief he was facing in this moment was worse than anything he had ever felt.
"Sergeant Barnes?" Woo says, but Darcy shushes the FBI Agent. She knew that Bucky needed to see it all for himself before he could process what was happening to his wife. "Are you all right?" Woo asks despite Darcy's incessant shushing.
Bucky looks at the picture of his wife, exactly how he remembered her in their time. Her hair was pinned in curls like she always wore it. Her mother's pin adorning her curls, and even though the picture was black and white, he knew that she was wearing an emerald green dress. Because that was her color. His heart clenched as he saw her wedding bands and engagement ring.
"She mentions you... in the show..." Darcy says softly, drawing his attention from the whiteboard.
"...She does?" Bucky asks as he fights back the urge to lash out and cry all in the same breath.
Woo nods in agreement and then pulls out a manila folder and opens it, "She mentions a husband, James, in the first episode. And then mentions a James Jr in the second episode. But we never see them." He reads allowed and Bucky's eyes widen as he sucks in a breath.
"Jamie." He whispers, "She mentions Jamie too?" Bucky asks in disbelief.
Darcy nods and sits down in the room where all the tvs are situated. She flips on the tv Bucky is most familiar with and begins to show him the two episodes. Bucky taking everything in that he could.
As the doctor looks over Wanda's stomach, searching for a heartbeat with his stethoscope, Mary is beside Wanda and Vision as they wait for the doctor's response. Wanda would've preferred Mary checking her over, but Vision wanted a doctor's perspective.
As the doctor looks up at the three of them, he nods, "Yep! Definitely pregnant." He confirms and Mary chuckles nervously along with Wanda.
"Well, that much we figured." Wanda says, holding Mary's hand.
"It's just kinda taken us by surprise. It's just kinda suddenly, quite suddenly, wasn't it? I mean, practically overnight." Vision rambles, trying to put the pieces together in his mind as to how this was even possible. "I mean.... how did this happen?" He asks the doctor and Mary chuckles.
"When a man and a woman love each other very much..." Mary teases her friends as they all stand to walk the doctor to the door.
"Well, we're just tickled pink... or blue." Wanda teases with a smile and Mary laughs softly.
"You're about at four months now, is that right?" The doctor asks Wanda and Vision. The husband shakes his head but the wife nods her head and then looks up at her husband who then nods his head in agreement with his wife with a confused smile.
"I thought as much." The doctor says and then looks at Mary slightly and she nods in agreement. Mary was a nurse when she wasn't helping women around the town as a midwife. "We let the little ladies keep tabs on their growing babies with fruit." The doctor explains. "Makes it simple for them."
Mary and Wanda glance at each other with confused expressions and then Mary shakes her head, "At four months, the baby is about as big as a pear." She tells her best friend. "At five months, a papaya. Six months is a grapefruit. Seven months is a pineapple, at eight months, the baby is around a honeydew."
The doctor chuckles and agrees with Mary and Wanda nods, taking it all in. She much preferred taking advice from her friend who has had a child than a doctor whom she'd never met. But Vision was skeptical. "Hypothetically speaking... what size fruit would it be at say, hmmm... twelve hours?"
The doctor raises an eyebrow, "Uh.. pardon? Twelve hours?"
Wanda hesitates and then jumps back into the conversation, "Well, i think this line of questioning is fruitless." Wanda says and looks at Mary for help.
Mary nods and then helps escort the Doctor out of the home. But Vision isn't done asking his question. "Well, hypothetically speaking, should we be concerned?"
"Hypothetically speaking, every new father to be gets nervous." The doctor says as he pats Vision on the back to try and reassure him.
"James was a nervous wreck when i told him i was pregnant with our son." Mary says smiling softly. "It's completely normal to be concerned, Vis."
"Well, I have nerves of steel, so there goes your theory, Mr. Doctor." Vision quips and before he can say anything more, Wanda steps in.
"Vision, why don't you see the doctor out." She says and he nods.
"Good idea." He says as he escorts the doctor to the door, "Thank you so much for dropping by, Dr. Nielson." Vision says as he opens the door for him.
Wanda looks down at her pregnant belly and smiles as she rests her hands on her stomach. Mary smiles at Wanda as the two women then move towards the dining room. "What was it like with your son, Mary?" Wanda asks curiously.
Mary smiles softly, but hesitates as she tries to remember. Her eyes flash amber but before anything else happens, Vision walks through the door. "Strangest thing just happened outside with... Whoa, Nelly!" Vision exclaims as he takes in his wife who now looked six months along in her pregnancy. Mary jumps in surprise at Wanda's increased pregnancy. "Have you gotten bigger?" Vision asks.
"Have i?" Wanda asks as she turns around and her belly knocks off a papaya from the fruit bowl on the table. Vision speeds over to his wife and friend and catches the fruit in time. "I can't tell from this angle."
"You never can until bending over is impossible." Mary teases.
Vision holds up the fruit in his hand, "I can't wait..." He chuckles before he even finishes his joke. He points to the fruit, "To be a proud... papa-ya." He states and Wanda shakes her head amusingly at her husband as Mary laughs with a smile on her face.
A little later, Mary and Wanda are building the nursery together. Mary had brought over James Jr's old crib and other necessities they would need for the new baby. The crib had been dismantled but Wanda didn't mind as she snacked on something she had made quickly. So while Mary and Wanda were setting up the room, Vision was in the rocking chair reading about pregnancies.
"Nesting, the overwhelming urge during pregnancy to clean, organize and prepare the home for the new baby." Vision says as Wanda uses her magic and opens up the mobile and sets it up over the crib while Mary places books in the bookshelf.
"See? You're an expert already. We've got nothing to worry about." Wanda says.
"Nothing to worry about outside of morning sickness, mood swings, aching back and..." Mary says but Vision shakes his head, "Feet.." She trails off the symptoms of pregnancy.
"Darling, you should probably sit down." Vision says as he stands up from the rocking chair.
Mary nods, "Let Vis and I handle the nursery." She adds.
Wanda shakes her head with a smile, "Don't be silly. All i feel is excitement, happiness, and..." Wanda gasps mid sentence, "Oh!" She exclaims and looks down at her stomach in shock.
Vision moves to place his hand over Wanda's stomach, "Kicking? Already?"
"Oh, it's such a strange sensation." Wanda says and Mary nods in agreement. "It's kind of fluttery." She explains it and giggles with a scrunch of her nose. Mary gasps as the butterflies on the mobile come to life instantly and flutter around the nursery. Wanda turns in shock and gasps, "Oh, did i do that? I didn't mean to."
Vision chuckles but then halts himself as a butterfly lands on his nose, "Oh. Uh... darling." He mutters to Wanda "Hello little fella." He teases the butterfly as Wanda giggles and takes it off his nose and leads the butterflies out the open window. "Well, if that was the first kick, that puts you at about..."
"Six months." Mary says.
"Boy oh boy, and I thought i had super speed. I can't keep up." Vision says and then scrunches his face as Wanda walks back over and he begins to talk to his child, "Please don't misinterpret, I can't wait to meet you, little Billy." He says as he kisses Wanda's stomach.
"Billy?" Wanda asks.
"Yeah." Vision says with a smile.
"Well, i was thinking Tommy. Just a nice, classic, all American name." Wanda tells her husband.
Mary laughs softly as she watches Vision and Wanda have a little debate over what their name for the baby will be. "Hmmm, Tommy, hmmm, yeah." Vision ponders the name but then shakes his head, "Then there's Billy, isn't there? Named after William Shakespeare. All the world's a stage. All the men and women, merely players." He quotes the famous poet.
Wanda chuckles, "Well, i guess there's only one solution to this debate." She states, "Hope for a girl." She teases and Mary chuckles. Wanda then waves her hand and the stork on the wall is finished painting.
"Well, we ought to decide soon. I estimate the baby's due...." Vision ponders as Wanda eats her snack, "It's not a constant progression, assumingly logarithimc, but were i to graph the fetal-"
"Baby." Mary corrects Vision and he nods.
"The baby's development thus far..." Vision starts to ponder again and Wanda shakes her head.
"He's gonna be here before you figure it out." She teases her husband but he doesn't hear her and continues to figure it out in his mind.
"Nearest i can conclude is that Billy-"
"Tommy." Wanda corrects her husband.
"Hmm." Vision mutters at the name choice, "Is Friday afternoon." He says with wide eyes.
Mary and Wanda both widen their eyes, "In three days?" They ask in unison.
Wanda gasps, "Maybe i should sit down." She states slightly in shock.
After the three of them calm down after figuring out Wanda's due date, Vision is sitting at the table with a baby doll, trying to practice his diaper skills. He eyes the doll as Mary chuckles. He stares the baby doll down and nods, "I think we have an understanding." He tells the doll. Mary laughs as she sits at the table and watches Vision, "Start the clock!" He tells Wanda and Mary. The two women both press their stopwatches as Vision speeds through changing the diaper of the baby doll. Within seconds, he raises his hands, "Time." He calls and both women stop their clocks.
"You're personal best." Wanda says proudly to her husband.
"Yes!" Vision says, proud of himself. "We are nothing if not prepared." He says confidently.
But the moment is caught by surprise when Wanda winces at her stomach. "Wanda?" Mary calls to her friend from the table. "Do any of your books or experience talk about this?" She asks, pressing her hand to her stomach to brace herself from the momentary lapse of uncomfortableness. "It's not painful... but it's strange."
"A tightening sensation?" Mary and Vision ask in unison, then smile at each other.
"Yep, that's it." Wanda says.
"Yes." Vision says and grabs his book, "Where was it?" He asks as he speeds through the book. "Braxton Hicks contractions."
"Also known as false labor." Mary explains. "Usually it will start in the third trimester."
"Named after John Braxton Hicks in 1875..." Vision explains and Wanda raises an eyebrow.
"Honey." Wanda says and then motions her hand for his to hurry up.
Mary leans over to Vision and points to the spot she knows they should practice. "Breathing exercises." She tells Vision and he nods, standing up from the table and walks over to his wife in the kitchen.
"Mary wants us to work on our breathing exercises." Vision says.
"It should go like this." Mary says and then demonstrates how Wanda should breathe during the contractions and then Wanda begins to copy her friend, as well as Vision.
"Yeah, it's not working, i can still feel it." Wanda says as she holds her stomach.
"I'm sorry." Vision says and then Wanda groans loudly in pain, so much so that the electricity in the home begins to spark. The lights flicker as the sink begins to fill up and bubble while the ice machine in the fridge begins to make ice all on it's own. "What the Dickens!" Vision exclaims then looks at his wife and friend, "Let's abandon the kitchen!" He shouts to them as the two women scream in panic as they rush out of the kitchen.
When the three rush out of the kitchen, the lights begin to get brighter and brighter. Mary, Wanda and Vision get into defense positions and then suddenly the lights go out as well as the power in the home. "It stopped." Wanda states the obvious.
"Yes.." Vision says, still wary of everything that just happened. "I'll go check on the neighbors." He states and rushes out of the home. When he comes back, he looks over at Wanda and Mary, "It appears the whole block is out." He tells them.
"And that was just a fake contraction." Wanda says as she slowly walks over to the couch, "Who knows what will happen when the real thing starts." She states as she sits down slowly on the couch with Mary's help. "Do you think they know it's my fault?" She asks.
"Our neighbors?" Mary asks quizzically and Vision walks down the stairs and moves towards the couch.
"Well, yes, with all the close calls we've been having, it seems the people of Westview are always on the verge of discovering our secret." Wanda explains and Mary notices a look on Vision's face she hadn't seen before. The confusion and the piecing parts of information together.
"Yes, I know what you mean." Vision says and Wanda tilts her head in slight confusion, "But... it's more than that, isn't it." He adds as he moves to sit down on the sofa, facing his wife and friend. "Mr. and Mrs. Hart, dinner. Outside with Herb." He mutters, then looks at his wife, concern written all over his face, "I think something's wrong here, Wanda." He tells her and Mary's eyes flash amber once again.
Mary blinks her eyes to fight the oncoming of pain in the back of her head but when she opens her eyes, Vision is standing again on his feet. "Yes, I know what you mean." He tells Wanda as he moves to sit down on the sofa. "The truth is, we are in uncharted waters and you know what? I'm anxious, too." He tells Wanda and Mary smiles at the couple, remembering her own husband smiling at her with his hands on her stomach.
"We just don't know what to expect." Wanda says with a small smile.
"Nope." Vision agrees.
"Will the baby be human or Synthezoid? A bit of both?" Wanda teases.
Vision smiles at Wanda with love in his eyes as they talk about their child, "If he's anything like his mother, Billy will be perfect." He tells his wife softly.
Wanda crinkles her eyes with a smile, "You mean Tommy."
Vision tilts his head in question, "Hmm." He mumbles with a sly smirk and then Wanda gasps in pain. Vision stands up instantly and Mary is by her side within moments, "Oh, no, Darling, are you all right?" Vision asks in a panic.
"This is a real one!" Wanda states through her labored breathing.
"What?" Mary asks in shock and Vision begins to float up in the air due to his nerves, "Vis!" Mary exclaims.
"I thought you said Friday afternoon!" Wanda exclaims to her floating husband as she tries to breathe and Mary helps her as best she can in the moment.
"Well, i didn't consider that the timings between developmental benchmarks could be quite random!" Vision explains loudly as he continues to float higher and higher in the air. But as Wanda begins her breathing exercise with Mary and then Vision joins in and begins to descend back to the ground. Wanda stands up with Mary's help and she continues her breathing with Vision and the two take each other's hands and sigh together.
"Better?" Wanda asks.
"Yes, darling, thank you, it's passing." Vision says but then a spurt of water goes overhead and then the three of them begin to be rained on from the inside of the house.
"Vis..." Wanda murmurs.
"Yes, dear?"
"I think my water just broke."
"Yes, dear."
Bucky takes in his wife on the screen in front of him as he watches the newest episode which takes place in the seventies. He looks over at Darcy and Woo with concern in his eyes, "How do we get her out of there?"
Darcy shakes her head, "We don't know how just yet." She explains. "I've been telling you all that i know."
Bucky nods slowly, looking back at the paused screen of his wife in seventies clothing, he smiles softly at her. "I'm getting you back, Luna. I swear it on our children's lives. I promised them they would have their mother back."
Woo looks at Bucky and steps forward, "You love her a lot, don't you." He says, taking in his own assessment of Bucky and Mary's relationship. No one in the world outside of Wakanda and the Avengers had ever seen Mary and Bucky's relationship. This was all new for anyone to witness. Because the world had only ever seen Mary without Bucky, or Bucky without Mary. Or the couple going through trials that caused them to not be together in the States or flee.
Bucky looks at his wife again and nods, "She's my everything." He says quietly, "Without her... I wouldn't be a father to three incredible kids, i wouldn't be a husband." He mutters and then pauses as a tears slips past his eyes and falls onto his ungloved vibranium hand and onto his wedding band, "I would be so lost without her." He says with a weak smile.
Darcy hesitates, feeling tears of her own forming as she hears Bucky talk about his wife, a woman she's looked up to since she was a child and had met years ago. She was seeing a new side of Mary and Bucky.
"You'll get her back." Darcy vows, "I won't stop until Doctor Barnes, and everyone in that town is free." She says and Woo nods, voicing his own agreement. Bucky looks over at the two who have helped them and smiles weakly.
The loss of his wife was tearing Bucky apart, the feeling of her being close but so far away. Only being able to look at her through a tv screen and still not knowing what was wrong. It was killing him. He wanted to shoot things to vent out his anger but he knew he had to be productive in his anger, only using it when necessary. He needed to get Mary back with as little complications as possible.
Darcy and Woo watched as Bucky left the room without a word but they knew why he was leaving so suddenly. He needed time for himself to process. And as he stepped outside the tent and walked towards the Hex, he fell to his knees.
He yelled out to anyone who was listening, his tears were streaming free now down his cheeks as he was crippled by his anguish and sorrow. He needed Mary. He needed his Luna.
He punched the ground as he let his anger run free. He pulled his gun out from his waist and shot at the Hex, but the bullets didn't puncture the field. He pulled out his knives he kept on him at all times and threw them at the Hex while screaming in sorrow and pain.
And when he had no more anger left, he fell to his knees once again and stared at the Hex with bloodshot eyes. The solider in him wouldn't let him leave his spot in front of the Hex. The protector couldn't leave. The Alpha had to protect his Luna.
And he would find a way through the Hex.
