30. I Can't Feel You
Mary sat in her chair on the porch with a smile on her face as she watched Steve throw the shield with Becca down on the field in front of their home. Things were quiet. Finally peaceful. Mary was still learning her abilities and what they entailed. Bucky was helping Becca train with Steve and Sam. Winnie was living life to the fullest that she could, and Jamie was simply basking in having his family back. All of them.
Tony made visits, as did Stephen. They both wanted to check in on Mary, how her powers were progressing in the two weeks since Thanos had been defeated.
But throughout everyone, two people were silent with her. Well, one of the two were silent, the other was updating her every now again like he had been doing since his recovery.
"She's not talking with me much." Pietro says softly, heartbroken that he had been apart from his sister long enough to cause a rift in their unbreakable bond. "But i know she's been contemplating talking with you but she doesn't want to bring you into this."
Mary perks up as she looks at Pietro through her laptop screen resting on the porch table. "What?" Mary asks curiously. "How could I help?"
"Because you are the only person she can think of that might know the answer to her question. And you don't, then you know someone who does." Pietro explains with a sigh. "It's been two weeks since we came back, and she has not stopped looking."
"Looking? For what?"
"Not a what." Pietro corrects Mary as he looks into the camera. "A who."
"Wh- What?" Mary stammers and sits up in her chair.
"She can't find Vision, Mary." Pietro says. "There's no gravestone, no burial site for him. I've looked around the world for her and have found nothing."
Mary's eyes widen in shock and horror. She had watched Vision die, twice. And in her own grief, something happened to the man, not the synthezoid or android, but the man that had given her words of encouragement, who was a friend, and was her friend well before he became Vision. He was Jarvis before Vision. And Jarvis was precious to Mary in so many ways.
"I- I don't know what happened to his body, Pietro." Mary stammers, tears filling her newly ambered eyes as she tries to think of who might possibly know where Vision's body is. How it was treated and how it got to the place it's at. "But i'm going to find out." She states with determination and a righteous fury in her voice. "He needs to be buried."
Pietro nods on the screen and then the door to his room opens and Wanda walks in and sees Mary on the screen. "M- Mary." Wanda stammers. "Pietro..." She murmurs disapprovingly to her brother. He only shakes his head and raises his hands in defense.
"I had to, Sis." Pietro responds, "She could know someone who knows."
"I didn't want to bring her into this." Wanda says with tears in her eyes and a lump in her throat. Mary could feel the pain and grief ripping through her screen as Wanda ran her hands through her bright ginger hair. "This is my problem."
"But she can help."
"I want to help, Wanda. I need to do this for my own sanity. Because in my own grief of losing everyone, I didn't see to Vision's body being taken care of. And that's on me." Mary tells the Maximoff twins and Wanda turns her head, her eyes flickering red as she tries to maintain control over her powers. Wanda sat down beside Pietro and looked at Mary.
"He's my responsibility though." Wanda says softly.
"But he was my friend long before he was Vision." Mary replies. "I knew him as Edwin Jarvis, Tony's butler and father figure. Then i knew him as Jarvis, the sassy and dependable A.I." She explains, "And then, he was Vision, the person who told me i was worth something, that i contributed to something greater when i felt like i was worth nothing, that i was a weak point in the team."
Tears roll down both women's cheeks as they just simply cry over the loss of Vision and the fact that his body is missing. Bucky can hear his wife struggling to hold back her tears as he catches the shield. He looks at the porch as Becca takes her shield from her father. He knows something is going to come of this conversation she's having. And he mentally prepares himself for whatever she's going to tell him.
Because shortly after he sees his wife crying, she closes her laptop and walks down the stairs. Her amber eyes glow slightly and it sends chills down Bucky's spine as he turns towards her but she's not looking at her husband.
She's looking at her brother.
"Where's his body, Steven?" Mary snaps and Steve turns to look at his sister with a confused expression.
"Who's body?" He asks, genuinely curious.
Mary shakes her head, "Who took his body after Thanos snapped his goddamn fingers." She re-words her question. "Who was our only casualty on the team."
Steve's eyebrows knit together in thought and after a minute or so passes, his eyes widen and he stares at his sister. "Vision." He whispers. "Mary, i-"
"Where is his body?" She demands an answer. "Who had his body and why hasn't he been buried with a funeral?"
Steve shakes his head, "I don't know everything, Lizzie." He says, "He died on Wakandan soil though, so if anyone would know where-"
"Ramonda." Mary mutters and then within seconds, she's calling the Queen Mother on her Kimoyo Beads.
"Mary? Is everything alright?" Ramonda asks as her holographic image appears in Mary's palm.
"No, it's not. But i think you might have some answers to my question." Mary responds and the Queen Mother nods for Mary to continue, "Vision's body, where is it? He died on Wakandan soil, he's made of Vibranium. Surely you know something about where he is."
Ramonda hesitates and then looks at Mary, "Because of his intricate networkings, i do not possess The Vision's body." She says, "But i know where he is."
"That's all i need." Mary states.
Later that night as Mary was packing a bag, Bucky was laying on their bed with his eyes trained on his wife. "You be careful, alright?" He tells her and Mary stops to look at her husband with a shocked expression on her face.
"You're letting me go? Just like that?" She asks.
"You expected me to try and keep you here? When i know how much Vision meant to you?" Bucky asks, slightly offended but not in a bad way. He was just shocked that Mary thought he would do that.
"I-" Mary stammers, running her hands through her now short hair. Evelyn had cut it a few days prior. A new change. Bucky also had gotten a haircut, his hair was back to how Mary remembered it in the forties. "I need this."
Bucky nods, "I know you do." He says, "Which is why i won't stop you." He adds, "Why i can't, in good conscious, keep you here."
Mary's amber eyes well with tears as she walks over to her husband and wraps her arms around him. "Thank you." She whispers.
Bucky holds his wife, positioning her on his lap to hold her tighter. His vibranium hand smoothes down her short hair and says, "I'll hold down the fort here until you come back."
Mary pulls away to look at her husband and she rests her hand on his cheek. "I love you."
Bucky smiles as he looks up at his wife, "And i love you." He tells her, "I know you won't let anything stop you from getting his body back. Wanda needs this."
Mary nods, "I lost you too many times to say i don't know what she's feeling right now. And to not know where Vision is? How he's being treated? It's unthinkable, unbearable."
Bucky nods, "I know. So go kick some ass for me." He teases and Mary smiles weakly, but enough for him to know she isn't forcing it. Her smile is genuine through the pain and heartache she feels in this moment.
"You're sure he's here?" Wanda asks as she drives the three of them to SWORD headquarters. Mary had dug through every channel and networking she had to uncover where Vision's body was. And it took a lot to find out. She knew that someone did not want people knowing that an Avenger's body was here in this facility. Mary knew SWORD, she knew who founded it. She hoped that there wouldn't come to a fight, because she didn't want to test her powers right now.
She just wanted her friend back. And she knew Wanda just wanted Vision safe. He was her home, he was her comfort. They had grown so close during the time the Avengers were divided. Pietro was with Steve and Sam while Wanda went off on her own and eventually met up with Vision. The two had become a couple and Mary was happy for them both. But then Thanos and his army broke them apart.
"He's here." Mary swears, "I know he is. All my sources say so."
"How trustworthy are they?" Pietro asks from the backseat as his leg bounced rapidly. He didn't like driving, he much preferred running that to any other mode of transportation.
"My sources or SWORD?" Mary asks.
"Both." The twins ask in unison.
"My sources are trustworthy. But SWORD? They changed directors not too many years ago. So i don't know." Mary answers and the Maximoff's nod.
Soon after their conversation, Wanda, Pietro and Mary walk into SWORD headquarters. They were not here to be told Vison's body wasn't here. They knew he was, and they weren't playing games. Especially Wanda and Mary. They both had suffered too much to be toyed with.
Above them were giant screens playing the news about how families were being reunited and celebrations were happening all over the world. And while Mary had celebrated, Wanda never did. She never got the chance to celebrate her return with the one person she had clung to, that she had fought hard to keep by her side. Pietro was her brother and she loved him to the ends of the earth, but even he knew that Vision meant so much more to Wanda in a different kind of love.
A love only a spouse could give.
And Mary knew that loss intimately.
When Mary, Wanda and Pietro walk up to the front desks; Mary can feel the emotions of the receptionist. He was nervous and anxious. Like he was supposed to keep something hidden.
"How can i help you?" The receptionist asks the three of them.
"Where is he?" Wanda asks, breaking the silence.
"I'm sorry, who are you looking for?" The receptionist asks.
"The Vision." Mary states with a sharpness to her voice.
"I can't disclose that information."
Mary scoffs but Wanda shakes her head, "I know he's here." She says weakly.
"I'm sorry, but like i said-"
"Please..." Wanda mutters, cutting off the receptionist as she leans on the counter. Pietro grabs hold of his sister's shoulder and that's the strength she needs to not break down. "Please. When i came back, he was gone." She says, her tone of voice indicating she was not playing games and that she demanded to know where Vision was being held. "His... body...." She struggles to say, "And i know he's here."
"He deserves a funeral, at least." Mary snaps.
"I deserve it." Wanda says as her hand grabs onto Mary's as the desk phone rings.
The receptionist picks up and answers. Mary instantly knows who is on the other line and she's already displeased with how things are being handled. Here are three Avengers, powerful people. But not only was Mary an Avenger, she was a founder of Shield. She was close with Fury. And Fury had a hand in creating SWORD. So to piss of Mary, was a big mistake.
"Yeah, they're still here." The receptionist says softly and he glances at the three of them but quickly looked away. Mary's eyes glowed amber as Pietro and Wanda both looked up at the camera and the older twin raised his hand and flipped off the cameras that were pointed at them. Wanda simply looked up at the camera and tilted her head slightly. She was done with their games and torment of her emotions. "Are you sure?" He asks his boss and Mary smirks. The receptionist hangs up the phone and then looks back at the three Avengers. "Through the doors. Down the hall. Two lefts and a right." The man says. Wanda leads the three of them as she walks to the doors, determination written on her face. The receptionist scrambles to get to the door before them, "One moment. I have the buzz you three in."
"I got it. Thanks." Wanda snaps and her hands glow red with her wisps and the double doors burst open. Mary walks beside Wanda while Pietro follows them, he glances backwards and narrows his eyes at the receptionist and those watching before speeding to catch up to his sister and friend.
They walk the directions the receptionist gave them and Mary's eyes don't stop glowing. Her emotions are too high strung in this moment. The thought of finally getting Vision's body back and properly burying it. But she also had a bone to pick with the new director. Why it's been five years and no word.
The three look at the doors in the hallway and then see one lock turn green. Wanda pushes open the door and sees the face of her torment. "Wanda and Pietro Maximoff? It's an honor to meet you both." The director says and then looks at Mary, "It's an honor to meet you as well Doctor Barnes. Truly."
"I can't say the same." Mary snaps and Pietro crosses his arms.
"Who are you?" Wanda simply asks.
"Director Tyler Hayward. I understand you're here to see the Vision, to recover the body, is that right?" Hayward introduces himself.
"Well, I'm his next of kin." Wanda snaps under her breath.
"I understand." Hayward says and then pauses before continuing, "I'd like to show you something."
"And then you'll give him to me? To us?" Wanda asks.
Hayward barely nods his head before motioning to a glass balcony overlooking a below level. "Please, just come with me." He says before leading the three of them into the balcony closed off by glass windows.
When the three of them step into the balcony, they hear tools grinding on something. It sounds like a machinist shop and Mary can't tell what she's looking at. Wanda steps closer to the glass walls and shakes her head. "What is this? Why are you showing us this?" She asks as she and Mary turn to look at Hayward while Pietro has his eyes fixated on what the people are doing below them.
"Because you asked to see it." Hayward responds.
Mary's eyes widen as Wanda slowly turns her head back around to look once more at what the people below are working on. "It?" Mary snaps as she stares down Hayward before turning to look at what he's showing them again. Eventually it clicks in their minds that the pieces on trays they see isn't just anything.
It's Vision's body.
In pieces.
Mary's eyes widen as tears cloud her eyesight, her hand presses on the glass as her other hand covers her mouth. She lets out a shriek as Vision's head is revealed when a person walks away from him. "No!" Mary screams as she collapses onto her knees. Her hands clench in fists as she bangs on the glass. Wanda braces herself as she starts to lose her grip on her emotions and her hands fly to the glass.
"St-Stop..." She stutters in shock, "Stop... Stop it!" She shouts to the people decimating Vision's body. She can't take it. "What..."
"What are you doing to him?" Pietro finishes his sister's question as he wraps his arms around her. Wands clenches onto her brother's shirt.
"We're dismantling the most sophisticated, sentient weapon ever made." Hayward responds like it's the only answer there is. And it fuels Mary's anger.
"What?!" Mary snaps as she stands up and her hands glow with amber wisps.
"Vision's not a weapon." Wanda snaps in panic. "You can't do this!"
"In fact, it is our legal and ethical obligation." Hayward says.
"Ethical?!" Mary shouts, "How is this ethical!"
"I just wanna bury him. That's all i want." Wanda states.
"Are you sure?" Hayward asks and all three of them narrow their eyes with hatred for the man in front of them.
Mary's amber wisps swirl around her fingers as Wanda tries to control her emotions and Pietro vibrates in anger. "Excuse me?" The three of them say in unison.
"Not everyone has the kind of power that could bring their soulmate back online." Hayward says and then one look at any of their faces has him quickly adding, "Forgive me. Back to life."
Wanda shakes her head and Mary tries to take a step towards Hayward but Wanda grips onto Mary's hand. Stopping the eldest from doing anything that might harm their chances at getting Vision back. "No, i can't do that... it's..." She pauses, "That's not why we're here... not why i'm here." Wanda says.
"Okay. But i cannot allow you to take three billion dollars' worth of vibranium just to put it in the ground." Hayward says, "So, the best i can do is, let you three say goodbye to him here."
Wanda turns to look at Vision's dismantled body as she places her hands on the glass, Pietro still holding his sister. "He's all that i have." She whispers. Pietro knew what she meant, he held no ill will towards her when she would say things like that, because it was true in a sense. Vision was there for her when he wasn't. He truly was all Wanda had at times.
"Well, that's just it, Wanda. He isn't yours." Hayward states and that's the final straw for both Wanda and Mary. Wanda tilts her head as her wisps appear and shatter the glass. Righteous fury rages through both women and Pietro moves to stand behind Hayward to keep him trapped.
"How dare you!" Mary shouts at Hayward. "Do you realize that i'm the Advisor to the King of Wakanda? The nation that birthed Vibranium." Mary snaps, "You have no right to do this. Any of this. The Queen Mother had no idea what she signed when she gave SWORD Vision's body. You swore to keep his body safe until we could bury it." Mary snaps. "Let me speak with my King and we'll see who's in the wrong."
"Your king has no say in this matter any more." Hayward states simply. "The weapon is ours."
"He was a hero!" Pietro snaps. "And you treat his body like it's nothing more than wires and money."
"You're pathetic." Mary snaps as Wanda floats her way down to the floor where Vision's body is. Mary's eyes glow bright amber as she looks over Hayward, "You're nothing more than a power hungry man who thinks he knows best. But you are so far from the truth."
"And what makes you the judge of that?" Hayward asks.
"Because i can see your soul." Mary snaps, "And there is no good in you. Your soul is black with greed for power, for money, for control."
Hayward's eyes widen and then he shakes it off as armed guards storm the room and aim their weapons at Wanda. "Fall back." He commands them. "It's fine. Let her see for herself."
"I'd like to see you try and stop us." Mary snaps, "But that's up to Wanda to decide. Because if it was up to me? I would pull rank with you right now and take Vison's body. You don't deserve the title you have. You never did."
"Mary." Pietro says as he tilts his head upwards to motion for her to turn around and help Wanda. "I got him." He tells her and Mary nods.
The friend jumps down onto the lower floor, her powers cushion her as she stands up and walks slowly towards Wanda. Mary's amber eyes take in the sight of Vision's body. Tears flow freely from her eyes. She watches as Wanda places her hand gently on Vision's forehead, where the Mind Stone used to be. Her wisps enter his open head and she watches as Wanda finally begins to break down. "I can't feel you." She whimpers. The last words Vision ever said to Wanda were that he could only feel her in his mind when she used her powers on the stone. And that she could only feel Vision, no Mind Stone, no wires or technology. Just Vision. Mary places her hand over her mouth as she weeps for her friends and the loss of one of her closest friends throughout her life. "I can't feel you." Wanda whispers as she caresses Vision's head before leaving the room.
Mary and Pietro follow Wanda out of the room, leaving Hayward to think about the threats Mary gave him. She would rain hellfire on that man given the chance. But she had to make sure Wanda was okay first.
"Wanda-" Pietro starts to speak but Wanda shakes her head, simply not in the mood to handle talking, even if it's from them. She just wants quiet. And she pulls out of the parking lot and drives off to only she knows where.
Mary glances at the signs as Wanda drives to New Jersey. She glances at Pietro who shakes his head. She pulls out her phone and sees a few texts from her brother, a missed call from Bucky and a missed call from T'Challa on her beads.
When Wanda pulls into an empty plot of land and stops the car, they all climb out but Mary steps to the side of the car as Pietro and Wanda walk into the empty plot. Wanda clutches an envelope to her chest and she slowly opens it up to reveal a property deed in Wanda's name to the land they're standing on. A heart is written on the property deed and inside the heart reads, To grow old in, V. Pietro stands just outside the plot grounds, letting Wanda process. He looks over to where Mary stands by the car with her phone pressed to her ear.
"Everything we thought was happening was not what we were told. SWORD has been dismantling Vision's body, James. They were tearing him apart." Mary says. "Like he was nothing more than a weapon they were trying to figure out how it worked."
"But he's not." Bucky says over the line and Mary scoffs.
"That's what we tried to tell the director." Mary says, "He didn't see it that way." She adds, and then her eyes look over at Wanda as Pietro races to his sister as she collapses onto her knees and weeps over the life she wasn't going to ever live with Vision now. "I saw his soul. It was black, James. He's filled with greed and self pride."
"That sounds like some other people we know." Bucky responds and Mary nods as tears fall from her eyes as she watches Wanda. Pietro tries to console her but Wanda is not stopping.
"Yeah." Mary mutters and then her eyes widen as Pietro backs up as his sister unleashes unparalleled power. "Wanda-!" She screams before she's engulfed in the power and she drops her phone and she blacks out as a soft glow of amber surrounds her as red magic takes over.
Back in Wakanda Bucky's eyes widen as he hears his wife shout Wanda's name and then static on Mary's end of the phone. "Mary?" He questions as he can make out screams on the other end, both male and female. "Mary?!" He shouts into the phone, "Doll! Answer me!"
He races out of the hallway he had stepped into to take the call and his eyes are filled with dread as Sam, Steve and Becca turn to look at Bucky. "Buck?" Steve calls to his brother in law.
"Papa? What's wrong?" Becca asks her father.
"Something happened with Mary and the Maximoff twins." Bucky states in disbelief.
Well.... aren't we all off to a lovely start... eh?
I know y'all wanted either option 1 or 3, but to me, 2 felt the most realistic for Mary. She would've been pissesdat Hayward, she would've been with Wanda when it all went down because that's who Mary is as a person and a friend. She would help fight those battles with Wanda. Their bond was already something special all the way back in Age of Ultron, it developed slightly in Civil War but now is where it can reall flourish.
And our bby Pietro finally has screen/chapter time! I've subconsciously sidelined him because int he movies, he's dead. So to add him into the plot is tricky, especially for WandaVision. Part of who Wanda grieves in the show, is her brother. But imma have to alter that somehow when we get to Fietro. That should be fun. I'm already picturing dynamic duo chaos between Pietro and Fietro.
Don't hate me too much.
Love, Red
