29. Try It On

The first few hours of the next day was a blur for Mary, Stephen had teleported a small handful of the team back to the destroyed compound to retrieve what they could of the technology they had when they did the Time Heist. Bruce and Tony picked through what they could find with the help of Wanda as she would use her wisps to move the heavier debris. Mary was there because she wanted to go through what she could find of the rooms. Precious memories were made in the compound, and though i would be rebuilt, it wouldn't be the same as it was before. That compound had been her and Jamie's home the last five years, and now that it was gone, it was just another thing that reminded them all of Thanos and his army even though they had been snapped away.

When they returned to Wakanda, Tony, Bruce and Shuri got to work on building a smaller time travel platform, made for one or two people at most until a bigger one could be built in the future. But before that was finished, the Guardians were returning to space. And Mary wanted to say her goodbyes to them before they left.

Thor had made the decision to leave New Asgard in Valkyrie's hands, he hadn't been much of a King since half his people had been killed by Thanos along with his brother Loki. He wanted to do something different, and so he decided to join the Guardians in space. Much to Peter Quill's dismay.

Becca was also saying her goodbyes to the Guardians, she knew them more than Mary did, she had fought with them on Titan.

Mary watches as Becca talks with Drax and Mantis and then turns her head to look over at Quill and Thor. Both men smile at the woman but Quill is focused on who Mary remembers being told is Gamora when Thor walks up beside the captain of the spaceship.

"Oh, here we are!" Thor states boisterously and then Mary side steps out of Thor's way as he barrels into the hull of the ship, "Tree, good to see you." He says to Groot as he lays his duffel bag on the table and Mary cringes.

Her close friend was still recovering over the loss Thanos put him through, but everyone being back was helping immensely. And the fact that Becca was alive helped Thor, he adored the young girl, his Little Warrior he called her. They had many fond memories together and he would miss her. He would miss both of them.

"Thor?" Mary asks as she walks up to where Quill stands overlooking his holographic board. The Norse god smiles at his friend as he takes off his sunglasses, her amber eyes catching him off guard before his eyes noticed the Soul Stone resting on her neck and chest. It was still taking them all a while to realize that Mary was still Mary, but with vastly powerful abilities now.

"Lady Mary." Thor says with a smile and he pulls her over with his arms and begins to plait her hair for what they both assume to be the last time in a long while. Mary smiles softly as Thor then looks at Quill, resuming what he was saying to the other Guardians, but mostly Quill. "The Asgardians of the Galaxy back together again." He states with a smile as a map of a sector of space is in front of them. "Where to first?" He asks as he swipes the screen and a new sector appears.

Quill grumbles and swipes the map back to how he had it as Drax walks over to stand beside Quill, "Just so you know, this is my ship still. I'm in charge." Quill states, trying to assert dominance over Thor which only makes Mary laughs softly as Thor threads his fingers through her hair.

"Me next, Uncle Thor." Becca says with a smile as she walks over to her mother.

Thor smiles at his niece and then looks over at Quill, nodding, "I know. I know." He states as if it was obvious, but Mary knows Thor will still try to assert his own dominance, "Of course you are. Of course." He says, whispering the last sentence and then swiping the screen back to where Thor had it.

Quill was having a hard time believing Thor was telling the truth, "See, you say 'Of course,' but then you touch the map." Quill states as Drax eats chips Becca had brought him beside Quill, "It makes you think that maybe you didn't realize i was in charge."

Thor continues plaiting Mary's hair as he turns to look at Quill, "Quail, that's your own insecurities in there."

"Quail?" Starlord questions.

"Okay? I'm merely trying to be of service and assisting." Thor says, not having heard Quill question the name Thor called him.

"Quill."

"That's what i said." Thor mutters.

"You should fight one another for the honor or leadership." Drax states as he chews on his chips Becca calls Ruffles.

"Sounds fair." Nebula says from where she sits in a chair on the ship.

Mary snickers along with her daughter as Thor absentmindedly finished her hair and ties it off and then Becca steps into where her mother stood and Thor's hands instantly go to plait his niece's hair.

"No fighting you two." Mary states to them and both men stammer to form a reply.

"It's not necessary, okay?" Quill murmurs.

"It's not." Thor mutters.

"I got some blasters unless you guys wanna use knives." Rocket pipes in from where he stands on the table in between the two men.

"Oh yes! Please, use knives." Mantis states from her corner in the ship.

Drax nods in agreement, "Yeah. Knives." He states.

"I am Groot." Groot pipes in as well, seemingly the whole team wants to watch a fight between Thor and Quill. Both men glance at each other anxiously and then break out into nervous laughter, though as Thor laughs, Quill tries to laugh louder.

"Not necessary." Quill states with a slight accent he didn't have before.

"There shall be no knifing one another. Everybody knows who's in charge." Thor says to the Guardians and both Mary and Becca glance at each other, trying to contain their laughter.

"Me... right?" Quill mutters softly.

"Yes, you." Thor laughs, "Of course! Of course." He states and then turns to look at Quill directly and whispers, "Of course."

When Thor finishes Becca's plait they both hug him goodbye, tears are shed but they know he'll always be there for either of them if they ever needed him. Mary smiles as she watches Becca give her final goodbyes to the Guardians, hugging Quill tightly and then stealing a chip from Drax before he could unsheath his knife to defend his chips.

"I wish we had more time to get to know each other." Mary tells Quill as he walks her and Becca to the exit.

The supposed leader smiles and nods, "Maybe one day." He tells her then looks at Becca, "You raised a hell of a daughter there, Mrs Barnes." He adds and Becca blushes, "You should be proud of what she accomplished on Titan."

Mary nods as Becca wraps her arms around her mother's waist, "I am. I couldn't be more proud of who she's become."

Quill smiles at Mary then mock salutes Becca with a smirk on his lips, "So long, Squirt." He states and Becca huffs at Quill, stomping her foot in frustration at the nickname.

"I'm not short!" Becca shouts with a puff of air and Quill laughs but then slowly his laughter dies as he sees the smirk on Becca's Face, "Goodbye, Quail." She teases back, using Thor's mispronunciation of his name.

On the outskirts of the Barnes home is where the geniuses decided to set up the time travel controls and platform. It overlooked the lake that currently had Winnie, Jamie, Becca, Peter, Esme and Morgan playing in it. The kids were playing as a family while the adults handled what they needed to do regarding the remaining five Infinity Stones.

Bruce locks the briefcase that holds the five stones as Steve stands beside the scientists, holding onto Mjolnir. The adults every now and again would glance over to the lake to watch the kids. It was a breath of fresh air to the war torn adults hearing the squeals of laughter coming from their Young Avengers.

"Remember, you have to return the stones to the exact moment you got 'em or you're gonna open up a bunch of nasty alternative realities." Bruce states to Steve and the Captain nods. Sam stands beside Evelyn and Mary while Bucky stands at a distance, overlooking it all like he did. Always the sniper at heart, keeping watch from a distance to get a clear view of everything and everyone.

"Don't screw it up, Captain Rogers." Shuri states as she flicks some switches on the control panel, she smirks as he looks over at her playfully disapproving of her words.

Evelyn walks over to her husband as he nods to Hulk, "Don't worry, Bruce." He says as he closes the briefcase, sealing the stones tight and secure. He looks over and smiles at his wife, kissing her forehead. "I won't be long." He promises to her, "Just clipping all the branches."

Bruce looks over at Mary who stands across from them beside Sam. Falcon's arm wrapped around his friend's shoulders, having missed each other for five years. Mary was happy to have her friend back. "You know, I tried... when i had the gauntlet, the stones, i really tried to bring you back." Bruce says to Mary and it brings the soul of the Avengers to tears.

Mary nods at Bruce, wiping her eyes as Steve and Evelyn walk over to the platform. "You know, if you want, i could come with you." Sam tells Steve and Evelyn smiles at the African American man they've all come to know as family.

"It'd put me at ease, that's for bloody sure." Evelyn quips and Steve sets the briefcase with the stones down on the platform and wraps his arms around his wife tightly as he can.

"I'm coming back." Steve tells his Austrian girl. "I have too much here to lose." He says as Esme squeals loudly and they turn to look at their daughter who waves at them from Winnie's shoulders.

"Daddy! Wook!" Esme squeals as Winnie flops herself and Esme back into the water and a loud but delightful scream comes from Esme as her head pops up from the water.

Evelyn nods slowly, her arms tightly around her husband. The two had talked about what Steve would do while he returned the stones or after. He told Evelyn after the celebrations had ended at the palace what had happened when he and Tony had to go back to another time to get the Tesseract. He saw Peggy. But when he looked down at his wedding band and then back at Peggy, he felt nothing for her like he had back in the forties. Evelyn and Esme were his future, and the new little bundle they were expecting, Evelyn had told him the news the same night and it only solidified the fact that everything he wanted was already with him now, not in the past. His sister and her family were here, everything was here in the present. Not the past.

Steve then turns to Sam and smiles in appreciation, "Thank you, Sam." He tells him, "But this one's on me. Lizzie gave her life for the mission, only right I give them back to complete it."

Steve walks over to Bucky and Mary follows, wanting to be beside her husband and sister in law when Steve goes to return the stones. Steve looks at Bucky and smirks, "Don't do anything stupid till i get back." Steve says to his brother and Mary can't help but let tears fall. Memories flooded the three of them of the Stark Expo all those decades ago, when Bucky told Steve the exact same thing.

Bucky scoffs as he wraps his metal arm around Mary's shoulders, "How can i? You're taking all the stupid with you." He retorts and Steve hugs both his sister and brother tightly.

"My boys." Mary whispers and wipes her eyes again as the three pull apart, Steve kisses his sister's head tenderly before turned around and picks up the briefcase as he steps onto the platform, holding onto Mjolnir tightly.

"How long is this gonna take?" Evelyn asks Bruce. She wasn't there for the time heist, she had stayed with Pepper at the lake house so this was her first time witnessing how it all worked, same with Bucky and Sam.

Steve taps his wrist and his time travel suit appears on his body with ease as Bruce flicks some buttons along with Shuri. "For him, as long as he needs." Bruce says.

Shuri nods in agreement, "It will be a mere five seconds for us." She adds and Bruce nods in confirmation.

Steve flips Mjolnir in his hand and smiles down at it, "You and Becca are gonna miss that, huh?" Mary asks as she looks up at her brother on the platform.

Steve chuckles and nods, "She said goodbye to it earlier." He teases and Bucky chuckles at hearing his daughter's antics.

"She was so surprised she could wield it." Bucky adds, remembering the reaction on his daughter's face when the hammer came to her. He only wished Mary had been there to witness it as well.

"Princess deserves to know she's worthy." Sam says, "We know she is, but the hammer coming to her told her she was." He tells them and they all nod and Mary smiles softly, knowing her daughter felt worthy of everything and more. She looks out and sees Peter throwing Becca into the water and Jamie tackling Peter, all with wide smiles.

The platform begins to whirr and Evelyn looks up at her husband, her hands resting on her stomach, "You ready, Captain?" She asks her beloved and he nods.

"We'll be here when you come back, Captain Rogers." Shuri says as Steve's helmet forms over his head.

"Going quantum. Three... two... one..." Bruce says and Steve vanishes from their eyes. He and Shuri then begin to flick and turn other switches to prepare for Steve's return.

"And returning in five, four, three, two, one." Shuri says and when they flick the remaining switches and Steve's supposed to be standing there on the platform, he isn't.

"Steven?" Evelyn says softly, fear gripping her and Mary breaks from Bucky and wraps her arms around her sister in law.

Bruce and Shuri exchange glances and then begin to hit other buttons and controls on the panel, "Where is he?" Sam asks nervously.

"He wouldn't..." Mary mutters as she looks over to Bucky and he also has a worried look on his face, and as he turns around to look he smiles softly.

"I don't know. He blew right by his time stamp, he should be here." Bruce says quickly as he and Shuri try to figure out what had happened and why Steve wasn't standing in front of them.

"He didn't." Bucky says quietly as Sam begins to panic and Bruce and Shuri scramble to find out what happened. Mary turns to look at where Bucky is looking and smiles in relief.

She nudges Evelyn and the wife of Captain America looks over and smiles wide as she sees her husband sitting in a button down shirt and slacks overlooking their daughter and nieces and nephew from the porch bench of the Barnes family home with slightly longer hair and his beard had grown back. He remembered that his wife liked the beard on him and he had spent time back in the forties before coming back because he wanted to speed up his hair growth for his precious Austrian.

A content smile rested on Steve's face as he watched his daughter tackle Peter into the water. He chuckled as Morgan threw a beach ball at Becca's head. "Sammy." Mary says, stopping the friend from panicking and yelling at Bruce more.

Mary, Bucky, Evelyn and Sam back their way over to the porch and Steve looks over at their direction and smiles. He waves them over and the four walk up the porch steps, Bucky and Mary taking a seat at the table and chairs they had put out for their breakfasts they wanted to eat outside for. Evelyn rushes over to her husband and wraps her arms around him tightly.

"Hi, Babydoll." Steve whispers and kisses her temple, "I told you i'd be right back." He reminds her and Evelyn shakes her head with tears in her eyes as she sits down beside her husband. She looks down across from her husband's feet and resting against the pillar of the porch steps is a round object in a tan, fabric cover. She looks over at him, raising her eyebrow in confusion and he simply nods. "I'd like to talk to Buck, Sam and B if that's alright." He says to his wife and sister and they both nod.

Mary stands up from the table along with Evelyn and calls out to her daughter, "Becca Baby! Uncle Steve wants to talk to you!" She tells her daughter and Becca climbs off of Peter's shoulders and trudges out of the water slowly.

"Okay, Mama!" Becca calls back and grabs a towel from the table the kids had set up to keep their towels from getting dirty. She watches her mom and aunt go into the house as she walks up to the porch with the towel around her. "Hi, Uncle Steve." She greets her uncle and then giggles, "Your face is fuzzy again." She teases and Steve chuckles with a smile.

"That it is, B." Steve says and then looks at his brother, best friend and niece. "Evelyn is expecting a baby." He tells the three of them and Becca squeals, both men grin at the news, "And I'm going to be stepping down as Captain America to be the father Esme and the new baby will need me to be, and the husband i need to be for Evelyn." He adds and instantly the cheers of celebration take a serious tone.

Becca looks over at her Uncle Sam and notices the sad but happy smile on his face, "Uncle Sam?" She asks softly.

Sam shakes his head, "I'm beyond happy for you, truly." Sam says, "But the only thing bumming me out is that the world won't have Captain America anymore." He tells them and Steve nods slowly in understanding.

Becca moves to sit beside her father but Steve grabs onto her wrist lightly and stops her, "I figured as much," Steve says as he lets go of Becca's wrist and grabs onto the covered circle, bringing into view of all three of them, "Which is why i also got this." He states to them and then unzips it, revealing the Captain America shield. Bucky, Sama and Becca smile softly at it until he looks up at his niece with a soft smile, "Try it on." He tells her and Becca's eyes go wide. Inside the house Becca hears the crashing of glass as Mary overhears Steve tell his niece, her daughter, to try on the shield. She looks at her uncle and father in surprise but both of them have proud smiles on their faces and nod at her.

Becca slowly, with shaky hands, bends down and picks up the shield, securing it onto her arm. She had held the shield before, even wielding it several times in combat with her uncle, but right now it felt like something else was happening. "How does it feel, Princess?" Sam asks.

"Like it someone else's." She whispers and Steve chuckles as he leans back on the bench.

"I don't see why. It isn't." Steve responds and Becca's eyes widen further.

"U- Uncle St-Steve." Becca stammers as tears cloud her blue eyes.

Bucky smiles proudly at his daughter, his precious first born as she holds the shield that now belongs to her. It was big on her, but he knew, as did Sam and Steve, that she would grow into it. Even if she felt unworthy to wield the shield that formerly belonged to her uncle, it was now hers.

Rebecca Sofia Barnes would be the new Captain America.

"I- Thank you, Uncle Steve." She whispers.

Steve nods, but then turns to Sam and Bucky, "I would like you two to train her. I'll help when i'm able to but until she's ready, you two will share the shield with her." He tells his brother and friend, "She's still in high school, she'll do missions with the shield but i want you there by her side until she's old enough and feels comfortable enough with the shield." Steve instructs them and both men nod. "You two will even do missions without her with it if she's too busy with school."

"We'll do our best." Sam says to Steve and then smiles at Becca, "I always knew you would take it, Princess." He tells her, "I've seen you use it, you're a natural."

Bucky nods in agreement with Sam and smiles at his daughter, "You used it against me." He reminds his Stardust and she bashfully nods as she remembers the fight on the bridge in DC and in the helicarriers. "Your Ma must be freaking out inside." He teases and Becca laughs slowly and then nods.

"Fia?" Peter calls to his girlfriend as he walks up to the porch with a towel draped over his shoulders. "Everything okay?" He asks.

Becca turns around and holds the shield proudly on her arm, showing Peter and his eyes widen, "Uncle Steve said i'm going to be the new Captain America, Benji." She tells her boyfriend and his mouth opens wide in shock but a smile instantly breaks out on his face.

"That's amazing!" He exclaims as Sam steps up to his niece and takes the shield from her as Peter wraps his arms around Becca tightly, swinging her around. "How's that going to work with school though?" He asks.

"Papa and Uncle Sam will help me train and Uncle Steve will show me how to use it properly." Becca responds. "And Auntie Eve is having another baby!" She adds and Peter smiles.

"New baby cousin?" He asks and she nods.

Bucky smiles at his daughter as she and Peter talk and then looks over at Steve, "When did you realize you wanted her to take over?" He asks.

"When she made the decision to go back to the Red Room with Natasha." Steve says, "Nat filled me in when she joined me afterwards undercover. I had never been more proud of B in that moment. She had faced her fears and trauma of that place and went back to save countless other girls from the same fate as her." Steve answers and Bucky nods, he knew the trauma the Red Room had put on thousands of girls, possibly millions. And the fact that his daughter was responsible for its downfall made him all that more proud of the woman she was becoming.

"She's not the young, naive girl she used to be when i first met her back in 2014." Sam says softly.

"She's growing up." Bucky breathes out with a small chuckle, "As much as Mary and I don't want to admit it, she is."

"She's growing into a strong woman, just like her Ma." Steve says, "She's a fighter like her parents. She's what this world needs." He tells his brother and friend.

That night, after the kids had all gone to bed, Bucky stands up from the couch and walks over to the record player, he passes by the fireplace and smiles at the shield as it hangs in its place on the wall above the mantle where it will rest when it's not being used.

"I can't believe our baby girl is going to be Captain America." Mary says softly, holding onto her mug of ginger tea as Bucky picks through the records.

He nods in agreement, "I'm still having a hard time adjusting to her dating, and now she's taken on a whole new role."

"It'll take a lot from her."

"She's got her uncles and me to help her until she's ready." Bucky tells his wife as he finds the record he's looking for and smiles softly as he places it on the record player and the soft music of It's Been A Long Long Time begins to play. He walks over to his wife, takes the mug from her hands and sets it on the coffee table and extends his hand. "Come on, Mary, let's go dance." He says, his Brooklyn accent being laid on thick and Mary laughs and shakes her head.

"James, I don't feel like dancing, really." She says, echoing her words she said to him the night of the Stark Expo.

Bucky grins and lifts her off the couch, her feet standing on his as they begin to dance to the music, "There, you're not dancing. I am." He states, echoing his own words from the past.

Mary smiles as a tear escapes her eye as she rests her head on his shoulder, "Always the clever one." She whispers. Bucky places a kiss on her forehead as the couple dances for the first time in five years together. The first time they'd danced to this song since 1943.

It truly had been a long long time.

The last chapter of Part 2 is upon us.

So much happened in this chapter and i'm balling my eyes out at 12:11am my time where i live. Steve didn't abandon his family and friends to live in his past, he has a future and his future includes being a dad and husband, handing down the Captain America mantle to BECCA.

I've teased her getting the shield since Timeless when she first wielded the shield tbh if y'all spotted that. I also teased it in Endless as well. And it was always the plan for Sam and Bucky to help train her, to use the shield when needed and she's not able to because she's still a highschooler.

But the next part kind of does a shift of focus now that Endgame is over with. Our mother and bb Mary has a whole new set a skills now that she has the Mind Stone. And someone she considers a sister is hurting deeply...

I announced it in previous chapters that Part 3 of Limitless will be FWATS but WandaVision was AMAZING, and Wanda is legitimately my favorite woman hero. I love her to pieces, if she murders anyone in Multiverse i will stand by her.

So Part 3 will focus on WandaVision! Mary plays a big role in Wanda's grieving. They grow closer as sisters and also learn about their powers.

But! If you guys have any ideas or plots you'd like to see, comment! I'd love ideas from you guys on things from the books or things you want to see from a time in Mary's life we haven't seen yet, or a futuristic idea for possibly Becca and Peter or someone else *wink wink* Winnie *wink wink*.

Speaking of Winnie! She will be in Becca's book Reckless in Part 3 which will be set in Spider Man: FFH. But she will cameo in Limitless cause i can't get enough of her. I already have her love interest planned and i love it. (He's also a webslinger)

But, that's for later.

Until next time!

With love, Red.
