14. My Good Man
The moment Tony had been cleared by his mother was the same day he took his little brother to experience something that he never got to do in Wakanda. He wanted his brother to feel like a kid despite the trauma the universe had been put through. Jamie deserved everything and more the remaining Avengers could offer. He had promised his mother that he'd protect Jamie with his life. Because he had failed Becca, Tony had made it his life's work to keep Jamie alive.
It had been only a month and a half since the Snap, people and governments were still trying to recover from it. Streets had been deserted, neighborhoods abandoned. No one was recovering from the loss they had all suffered.
Mary's only sources of happiness in light of it all was her son, her sunshine in the darkness, and the two weddings coming up. Evelyn and Steve's wedding and Pepper and Tony's. Both couples wanted it to be soon because everyone needed happiness in spite of all the sadness. Evelyn and Steve had chosen December for their wedding, Pepper and Tony had decided on June.
It kept her busy with all the preparations that needed to be done for both weddings. It kept her mind off the fact that her husband and daughter were dead. That there was no way of getting them or her friends back. Her King back. She couldn't focus on that anymore without crippling.
So for Tony to take Jamie for a one on one day as brothers, scared Mary. She hadn't been apart from her son since the Snap. And it terrified her that something would happen, which is why Evelyn and Pepper both knew that Mary needed something to take her mind off the fact that she would be apart from her son for hours.
Planning a wedding in the middle of a crisis proved taxing on both brides, especially when their grooms don't speak to one another. But through the Snap's after effects, Evelyn and Pepper had become close friends, confiding in one another about how petty their fiancé's were being through all of this. With the help of Mary and Natasha, the two weddings were coming along well.
They had everything nailed down for the most part. The venues were the biggest challenge at first, Evelyn and Steve had called down to the chapel in Brooklyn that Mary and Steve attended when they were young with their mother, and thankfully, the pastor had not been a part of the casualties in the Snap.
Pepper and Tony before the Snap had settled on Martha's Vineyard for the wedding, but due to the Snap, they had to cancel that and relocate the wedding somewhere else. They had decided on the property Tony had just bought for his soon to be wife and family. A lake house that seemed to be what they needed to calm their spirits and rejuvenate them all. So both venues were taken care of.
Next came the guest lists and who would be invited to both weddings. The Avengers were clearly coming, but for Tony and Steve, it was difficult to ask the other. They hadn't spoken much since their tiff at the Compound after Tony and Nebula were rescued.
But Mary sat them both down, separate and together, and told them flat out that if they wanted her a part of their weddings, then they needed to suck it up and push past their qualls with the other. Life was different now for everyone, life meant more to them. After their talk, Mary wouldn't consider the two men to be close friends at all, but they were cordial with one another. And the fact that Evelyn was in Pepper's wedding party and Pepper being in Evelyn's party made it increasingly hard for the two men to ignore the fact that they'd be seeing a lot more of the other.
The decorations were next, Pepper wanted simple while Tony wanted everything money could buy to spoil the woman who had loved and stayed with him through everything. But Pepper being Pepper had talked Tony out of nearly everything and they compromised on a woodsy theme and decor to go with their lake house.
Evelyn and Steve wanted simple decorations, Steve brought up the suggestion of having Austrian and American blended throughout the ceremony and reception. Edelweiss flowers, the national flower of Austria, and the rose, the national flower of America. Evelyn's bouquet would be a mix of the two flowers along with the decorations lining the pews of the chapel and the tables for the reception. From there, it was easy for the couple to decide on what they wanted for their reception and ceremony to be like.
Written vows for both couples were a must. They all had lived through so much that they needed to share with the other.
With everything being sorted out aside from one important detail, the weddings were planned. The only detail that was missing was what the grooms and brides would be wearing. Steve was simple, he would wear his Army dress uniform. Tony would wear a tux, leaving the brides to finalize their dresses.
And that was what Evelyn, Natasha and Pepper were going to drag Mary to while Tony took Jamie to Build a Bear.
"You sure you can handle this by yourself, Tony? I can come with. I know Jamie likes crowds but ever since the Snap he's been timid." Mary says to her son as he buttons Jamie's coat, it was early November and it was beginning to frost, Mary hoped that soon, there would be snow. Tony knew his mother would fuss over Jamie being away from her. Her maternal instinct was far too great to try and suppress that. Jamie was her only tie to Bucky now and the thought of losing that crippled the mother from within several times a day.
"Mom, i got this. Sven and I will have a great time building bears and such. You, Pep, Evelyn, and Nat go do what you're gonna do." Tony waves his mom off with his hand as he lifts Jamie into his arms. The precious little brother hugged Panthy tightly to himself and smiled at his mother.
"Got dis, Umama." Jamie says with a smile, "I wif big brofer."
Mary smiles at her sons, her babies, only one of them wasn't a baby by any means anymore. The other one though, she still saw as her baby boy. Jamie would always be her baby. "I know you are, Sunshine." She tells Jamie as she puts his beanie on his head. "I- Thank you, Tony.. he needs big brother time with you."
Tony smiles, shifting Jamie into one arm and pulling his mother into his other one, he kisses the top of her head gently. "I love you, Mom." He whispers.
Mary nods, leaning into her son, "I love you too, Tony." She replies and soon there's a knock on the door. The mother and sons break away when the door opens. Happy stands with a smile at the small family in front of him.
"Ready, sir?" Happy asks Tony.
"Hap, i've told you several times to just call me Tony." Tony teases as he grabs Jamie's to go bag of spare clothes, diapers and snacks. The genius billionaire nearly looked fatherly to Mary and it made her smile.
"No can do, sir." Happy replies simply and Mary laughs. She pulls on her coat and then steps past the men.
"I'll see you for dinner, boys." Mary states and Tony sighs but nods reluctantly. Mary had started the tradition after sitting down her brother and son of Friday Night Dinners. Mary, Steve, Jamie, Tony, Pepper and Evelyn would all eat dinner together every Friday. Sunday Night Dinners were where the Avengers would gather and eat together if they could make it. It was Mary's way of trying to keep everyone together. And for the most part, it was working.
"Bye bye!" Jamie shouted to his Umama as she walked out the door.
Mary smiled to herself as she grabbed her scarf and beret. She looked outside and saw Natasha in the driver's seat of the car they would be taking into New York City to wedding dress shop. It wouldn't be easy, but Pepper had booked both her and Evelyn to go to Kleinfeld's in the city. They had assured the brides that they would help with their dress needs despite the lack of happiness in the world. Brides still needed dresses for their weddings. People still needed to live their lives as best they could.
By the end of the day, both women had found the dress they wanted for their weddings. Natasha and Mary had even found dresses both fitting for the two weddings they would be attending. Evelyn's dress was an off the shoulder dress with a country style lace and open sleeves, a slim tulle skirt with a slit to expose her leg. Pepper's dress was also off the shoulder lace with a ball gown type skirt. Both dresses were what the two had wanted.
Now they just had to wait for their wedding days to arrive.
December 25th, 2018
Green-Wood Cemetery and Chapel
The sun shown brightly for the first time in months on the grave stones of James Buchanan Barnes and Sarah Winnifred Barnes as people walked into the chapel for the marriage ceremony. Their family member was marrying the woman of his dreams. Steven Grant Rogers would walk into the chapel a single man, but walk out a married one. Evelyn James Erskine would walk into the chapel a single woman, but walk out a married one. They both payed their respects to Bucky before entering the chapel at different times. Mary and Jamie stood in front of the two gravestones for a while before walking into the chapel hall for the ceremony. The last time they were here, Mary was with Bucky and Becca. Their first time as a family all together sitting down at Winnie's gravestone.
The memory of that day played over and over in Mary's mind as she held onto her son's gloved hand on the chilly Christmas morning.
Mary grins, tears in her eyes as she watches her husband and daughter interact. Bucky looks over at his wife, "Mary? What is it? What's wrong?" He asks concerned.
The wife smiles and shakes her head, "Nothing. Absolutely nothing, James. It's just that I realized that this is the first time we've been together. All three of us." She says and Bucky smiles in realization, nodding.
But Becca shakes her head, "Nah uh." She states, catching the attention of her parents and look at their daughter in confusion, "All four of us." Becca states as she rests her hand on the gravestone in front of them.
Sarah Winnifred Barnes
Beloved daughter, sister and niece
Heaven is brighter with you in it.
Mary wipe her eyes as she rested her hand on her daughter's gravestone, "Five of us now, darling." Mary whispers, "Are you having a good time with your Papa and Sissy up in heaven? You finally get to meet them after being with your grandmother for so long. Your namesake." She whispers softly, "I always think of you, Winnie. Your father's precious Piglet."
A few hours later and the wedding is underway. The small crowd attending Captain America and Doctor Erskine's wedding laughed as Jamie walked down the aisle with his mother. Jamie held onto the pillow holding the rings with fierce determination and Mary simply let petals fall from her small basket as the mother and son walked down the aisle to reach Steve.
Mary stood beside her brother and smiled at him as Jamie went to sit down with Tony and Pepper. Steve glanced back at his sister and smiled at her. "It's finally your turn." She whispered to her brother, "I'm so happy you get this. That Evelyn is still here with us." She says and the siblings glance at the empty pew with name plates in a spot where a person would be.
Sarah Rogers's name and picture sat in the very front pew. Evelyn's family had flown from London to witness her wedding to Captain America, the first Avenger. Steve hadn't seen his bride that happy when they arrived in the quinjet flown by Natasha in a while. She had been apart from her parents and brother for so long, and to know they were still alive was everything to the bride.
Beside Sarah's photo was Bucky and Becca names and pictures. And last but not least was Doctor Abraham Erskine's name and picture. The man behind everything it seemed in the lives of Steve and Evelyn. Behind the first pew were those they had lost during the Snap that couldn't attend the ceremony. Stephen, Sam, Peter, Wadna, Pietro, Vision, T'Challa, Shuri and so many others.
The couple made it a point to acknowledge those they had lost together and apart in their ceremony. Everyone knew when the vows started, there wouldn't be a dry eye in the sanctuary.
Evelyn stepped out with her parents and Steve beamed at the love of his life. His precious Evelyn. His reason for surviving. His everything and more. Her parents smiled at the Captain as they walked their daughter down the aisle. Evelyn had told them all about meeting Steve Rogers when she had accepted the apprenticeship under Elizabeth Bryne. How their family was connected to him and his sister.
Evelyn's parents kiss her cheeks and then hand her to Steve. The bride steps beside her groom and the both turn to the pastor with wide smiles. The pastor begins his speech but then stops and looks at the couple, "I believe that i'm not marrying you both today." The pastor says with a sly smile and Mary chuckles.
"What?" Steve and Evelyn both question when the pastor steps down and Mary steps in front of them.
"I am." Mary says with a smile, "Surprise." She tells them and Evelyn and Steve smile bashfully. The crowd smiles and laughs at Mary as she turns to the couple standing before her. "The couple standing before me hold very special places in my heart. My brother and the woman who even before she dated Steve, i considered my sister. And now i get to finally call her that, because she is and always will be, my sister." Mary starts and she already is dabbing her eyes with a tissue. "You two have persevered over so much strife and suffering to get where you are today. When the Accords happened and the Avengers divided, Evelyn stuck by Steve and our family, she brought us our uniforms and gear under the opposition of her peers. She sacrificed everything she had worked towards to do the right thing. Because we are Abraham Erskine's legacy, the three of us." She says with a smile and Evelyn smile at Mary as Steve squeezes his bride's hands.
"I could go on and on about Steve, my big brother, my first protector and the man of our small home with Ma." Mary says and Steve looks down at his shoes, remembering all the times he protected his sister at the cost of his own health and life. "Despite your health conditions, you kept our family afloat with your smiles and encouragement. And when Ma passed, you kept me solid on the ground when i felt like i was drowning.
"There will never be a day where i won't need you, Stevie. But starting today, i'm not your number one gal, Evelyn is. She is your one and only. She is the one who will help you through the suffering and the grieving, the happiness and the joys of life. Not me anymore, though i'm sure there will be times where it will be. As much as i'm sad to step down as your number one gal, i'm glad to call the woman who is stepping into that role my friend and my sister.
"I've known Evelyn since 2011. I met her in Austria, we were both trying to find ourselves within the past. And it seemed to work out in the best way possible. I took you under my wing as my apprentice and i couldn't have been more proud of you. You knew the weight your last name carried, and you carried it with stride. You still do. Only now you'll have two last names because i highly doubt you'll drop Erskine." Mary teases and Evelyn laughs as she nods in agreement, "Both of us hold two strong last names. Rogers and Barnes for me and now Erskine and Rogers for you. I know Abraham would've been so proud of you both. He was like a father figure to me for the short time i knew him. He was proud of his work and he was proud of you, Stevie. It takes a good man to become great, not straying from the righteous path set before him. And you've done all of that and more.
I'm proud to have both of you as my siblings. I couldn't ask for anyone better. And James-" Mary stops as she holds her hand to her lips, trying not to cry in front of the people as she grieved over her husband not being a part of the wedding of his brother in law. "He would've been so thrilled about all of this. And he would've kicked your ass, Steve, if he knew you wouldn't want this to happen without him. So i'm glad you both going through with this. We need happiness right now in the world."
Steve and Evelyn smile at Mary and then at each other, the two watch as Mary calls Jamie forward with the rings and she takes them from her son. She hands the rings to Evelyn and Steve and smiles, "Steve and Evelyn have written their own vows to say to one another. Stevie, you first."
Steve breathes out slowly as he pulls papers from inside his uniform jacket. It was his Army uniform from the forties, Mary had preserved it, kept it in mint condition for her brother while he was gone. She did the same with her own uniform and her husband's.
"Eve.. You came into my life when i didn't know i needed you." Steve begins and smiles at his bride. "I was finding my way in all of the newness of the world and the fallout of Shield madeit even more confusing, but i remember that the day Lizzie brought you into take over Pietro's recovery from the Battle of Sokovia, i was done for." He says and the crowd chuckles. "I went to check on him and there you were, standing beside him with a smile on your face and a sparkle in your chocolate brown eyes and i was a goner. You had me then and i didn't even know it.
"Then the Accords happened and it drove us apart before we were even together. But you brought us our gear despite the risks and i knew you had to know how i felt. And so.. i kissed you, in front of my family."
"I had a bet with Pietro about it." Mary interjects and Evelyn laughs with a bright smile on her face.
Steve playfully narrows his eyes at his sister and continues his vows, "I'll never forget that moment. That instant when i knew you were it for me, the emotions that stirred within me. I was hopelessly and irrevocably in love with you from then on. You had become my reason for living, my sole purpose in getting up in the morning. I had lost my sense of purpose when Shield fell, i threw myself into Avenger work and then that was taken away from me as well. I was lost, but you.. you brought me back." Steve says with a waver in his voice as he struggles to keep his emotions in check. "I can never thank you enough for being my rock in everything. When you lived in Wakanda, i knew you'd be safe from the threats the governments imposed after the events of the fallout and Accords. I wanted you to know how i felt, and when i dropped you off in Wakanda.. well.. you remember.."
"I'll never forget it." Evelyn says as she cups Steve's cheek with her hand and he smiles, leaning into her touch.
"I swore an oath that day to put you above all else, you and my family keep me going. You keep me breathing. You keep me stable." Steve says, "And when you stayed with Strange, i knew you'd be safe even then. Strange would've never let anything happen to you. But then... Thanos... and when we lost in Wakanda. My thoughts after i watched Buck and the others turn to dust... my only thought was you. Were you killed as well? Were you okay? Where even were you during all of this." He says softly, "And when Lizzie and I pulled up in front of the Sanctum, you were standing at the top of the staircase with tears in your eyes. You were safe, you weren't hurt. You weren't dust." He mutters softly his last sentence and Evelyn nods.
"I'm right here." She whispers to Steve who nods, he breathes out shakily and glances at his vows again.
"You're with me through everything, every nightmare, every sleepless night. You're there for me when i'm feeling okay to when i can't find it in me to get out of bed because the weight of the loss we all suffered is too much some days. You're there through it all for me. And i can only hope i'm there for you when you need me.
"I vow to always be by your side, to keep you and to hold you. To love you unconditionally and without reserve. I vow to stick it out through the arguments and the times where we don't quite like each other all that much. I vow to be the husband you need me to be. To protect you from all harm that may befall you. No matter what happens in our lives, i will always be there for you." Steve finishes his vows and lifts his hand to wipe away Evelyn's tears as they fall from her brown eyes.
Evelyn smiles at her groom as Natasha hands the bride her own vows. She breathes out slowly, trying to calm herself down. "Steve.. my Captain." She begins softly, "Words can never fully express how grateful i am for you, for Mary. When she brought me under her wing as her apprentice, i was so happy. I didn't know what i was supposed to do with my life, how i was supposed to carry such a big legacy by myself. But she showed me that i could do it. That i could carry the legacy of my last name to the best of my ability.
"And then you showed me i didn't have to carry it by myself. That i wasn't alone in this legacy. You were a huge part of my Opa's life and his accomplishments. And when i met you, i was starstruck. Here in front of me was not only my Opa's biggest accomplishment, but Captain America, the Star Spangled Man with a Plan." Evelyn laughs softly, "Even before meeting you, i knew so much about you. I was a fan of you. You were, after all a part of my family history. And you walked into Pietro's room, my image of you shifted. No longer were you Captain America, the hero that put and end to World War two, the Avenger who saved New York and Sokovia with your team. But Steve Rogers, brother to Mary and the caring, kind man behind the famous shield.
"There was so much more to you than meets the eye. Your love of sketching, your caring and compassionate nature for your nephew and niece. Your never ending love for Mary as your sister. How you really dislike how your birthday is the Fourth of July. Your love for taking a ride on your motorcycle. Your dislike of certain foods because you were allergic to them before the serum. Your protective nature that has never wavered, but strengthened with your time in the world. My Opa chose you for a reason, and because you are a good man. My good man, no one else's, i'm not sharing." Evelyn says teasingly with a smile and Steve chuckles.
"I vow to always be your comfort, where you can find your strength and love. To be your safe haven from the darkest of times that plague you. You can always count on me to hold you when you need it. And i know i will always be able to come to you with anything, no matter how small or how big. You are my protector just as i am yours. I will be yours for eternity and beyond time and space. I would go to the ends of the Earth for your happiness, to see your smile that lights up a room, your blue eyes sparkle with excitement. I always want you happy, but i know times are difficult right now, it feels wrong to be celebrating us when so many have lost their spouses." Evelyn says softly, her eyes linger on Mary slightly before turning back to her soon to be husband. "I love you for all time." She finishes her vows and then the couple looks at Mary with a small smile.
Mary wipes her eyes and looks at her brother and soon to be sister in law, "Do you, Steven Grant Rogers, take Evelyn James Erskine, to be your lawfully wedded wife, through good times and bad, swear to defend her honor and uphold your vows?" She asks her brother.
Steve nods, "I do." He replies with a bright smile.
Mary grins, then turns to Evelyn, "Evelyn James Erskine, do you take Steven Grant Rogers, to be your lawfully wedded husband, through joy and sorrow, swear to defend his honor and uphold your vows?"
"I do." Evelyn replies and smiles.
Mary then grins, "You may exchange the rings." She tells them.
"With this ring, i thee wed, pledging myself to you for eternity. To love you endlessly and fearlessly without hesitation or reservation." Steve says as he slides the ring onto Evelyn's finger.
Evelyn then looks up into her beloved's eyes, sliding his ring onto his finger. "With this ring, i thee wed, pledging myself to you for all time. To love you without limits and without relent." She states.
Mary nods in approval and grins, "With the exchanging of the rings and vows, i now pronounce you, husband and wife." She tells them and the crowd, "You may now kiss the bride."
Steve instantly wraps his arm around Evelyn, pulling her to him and dipping her slightly as she kisses her fervently. Their vows echo in their kiss. Their love radiating through each other.
When Evelyn and Steve pulls away, he helps her stand straight and smiles, "I love you, Eve." Steve whispers to Evelyn as he rests his forehead on hers as the crowd around them cheers.
"And I love you, Captain."
