08. Get This Man A Shield

"Mary? The students have been watching the news all day. Are you a part of what's going on?" Hank's voice comes through the phone as Mary looks around at what's unfolding before her eyes. Kingsgaurd and Border Tribe working together with Sam and Pietro, Rhodey as well as they stand outside.

"I wish i wasn't, but yes." Mary replies. "I wish i was calling under different circumstances, Hank, i miss you and the others." She says with a sad smile appearing on her face as she reminisces about her time when she stayed at the mansion.

Hank chuckles on the other end, "We miss you too. Logan doesn't show it but he misses you as well."

"Really? The Wolverine misses me? I'm stunned." Mary teases and Hank barks out a laugh on his end. She had missed her friends up in Westchester. So much happened when she left the care of Charles and the others. The Vietnam War had crippled Charles mentally and she hated watching her friend suffer like he did.

"Some of the students and now teachers ask about you from time to time but Charles talks about you as if you're no longer with us. That's what you want right?" Hank asks and Mary can hear him walking towards where she assumes the Professor is located within the mansion.

"That used to be the case, yeah. But two and a half years ago i came out to the governments and world that i was still alive. I've been living in Wakanda since then with my husband and our son." Mary tells Hank her story as quickly as she could. They had missed so much of each other's lives, they needed to catch up but now was not the time sadly and both of them knew that.

"I would love to ask you about your family but you asked for the Professor and i found him." Hank tells her and she can hear shuffling over the phone until a British voice appears over the phone and it instantly calms the mother down.

"Mary." The professor breathes out.

"Charles." Mary whispers.

"It's been too long. I wish this call was under better circumstances." Professor Xavior says. Mary and Charles had been close friends since 1965. She had come to him in Westchester out of curiosity for the Mutant X gene and how it worked. Charles was more than happy to explain it all to Mary but he realized then that she was suffering deeply. The pain and loss was killing her and he knew that if she didn't receive the help she needed then she would lose the core of who she was as a person.

Charles knew Mary as if she was his younger sister. He knew things about her pain and struggles that no one else aside from her brother and husband probably knew about. His gift of telepathy aided him in that. Feeling what she felt in those moments of crippling depression after the kidnapping of her daughter. The shattering heartbreak when she awoke to realize her brother wasn't coming home and she was left all alone.

They were connected in a way that was very rare for a telepath to do.

But Charles Xavior was no ordinary telepath.

"I know. I want to tell you so much, i want to see you but i can't. Not right now at least." Mary says as she fights to keep herself from breaking down. Hearing Charles's voice brought back the emotions within her that only he brought out in her.

"I long for that day to come." Charles tells Mary and she forces out a weak laugh. "But you called for a reason, i feel as if something monumental is about to take place."

Mary tries to calm her heart rate down as best she can, taking in deep breaths before she speaks. "It is. The man, whatever he is, that sent Loki and the Chitauri invasion back in 2012 is back. He's sending his army and hunting for these stones called the Infinity Stones. I've been in contact or close proximity to several, dating back to the second World War. He wants them for himself and to take over the universe essentially."

"What do you wish for me to do?" Charles asks concerned. "I could send the X-Men to aide you in the upcoming battle."

"We don't have time, i wish we did. But one of the stones is now here with us in Wakanda. His name is Vision, he's a ally and friend to me and my family. He possesses one of the stones on his forehead and the Princess and I are going to try and remove it before Thanos arrives to take it for himself."

"Mary, I don't think-"

"If the stone is here, Thanos will be too. I just wanted you to know what was going to happen if you saw it on the news. Keep the students safe, don't let them leave the grounds, please, Charles. I couldn't bear it if you lost more students." Mary pleads with her friend to just stay where they are and not do anything. She didn't want Charles to go through that pain he went through after feeling the loss and pain of losing so many students and teachers to the Vietnam War. "I love you, Charles."

"I love you as well, Mary." Charles says, not through the phone, but in Mary's mind. She rests her fingers against her temple with a small smile on her face. She hadn't felt his presence in her mind in decades. She had forgotten about their link. Their tether to one another.

She closes the phone, putting it in one of her pockets on her utility belt and begins to walk to where T'Challa, Steve and Bucky are dropping Jamie off with Ramonda.

"Ah, Inguka Yegolide! It is so good to see you, precious one." Golden Wolf. Ramonda says to Jamie as Mary steps into the room quietly, but all three men around her notice instantly. They see the pain and torment on her facial features. The tears that had escaped her hazel eyes.

Jamie grins and runs into Ramonda's arms. "Hi, Monie!" He greets the Queen Mother. The two begin to discuss what they'll do while everyone else is busy with the fight. T'Challa and Steve exit the room shortly after, leaving the Barnes family alone with Ramonda and the security that stays with the Queen Mother at all times.

"Luna?" Bucky whispers as he steps over to his wife, his blue eyes laced with concern for Mary as his arm instinctively pulls her into his embrace.

"I- I just had to call an old friend." Mary says, "I miss him is all." She explains to her husband, "He's a professor and his students have been watching the news all day and he needed to know what was going on from an insider's perspective." She expands on her explanation as best she can and Bucky nods, understanding as much as he could.

"When this is past us why don't you go see him." Bucky suggests with a tight smile, he knew that if he wanted to remain free, he couldn't leave the borders of Wakanda.

"You'll come with me this time." Mary vows and it stuns Bucky, "My friend knows everything. He knows me better than I know myself sometimes." She says with a soft laugh as she remembers the first time Charles entered her memories. The emotions he felt from her memories were overwhelming.

"I'm curious now, you've never really mentioned this friend before to me." Bucky questions, genuinely curious about this secret friend his wife has. He thought he knew everything about Mary, but there were still parts of her past that she kept hidden, for her own sake of not reliving it.

"His name is Professor Charles Xavior. I don't mention him much because when i met him, i still went by Mary. Before Elizabeth." Mary says softly. "He runs an institute for gifted young children to thrive and embrace their differences."

"He sounds like someone you'd be close to, Doll." Bucky points out and Mary nods with a small smile on her lips.

"He's like family to me. But i keep him secret because his work isn't well liked by the public most days sadly." Mary states, "They prefer to be known by only those who they can help."

"You'll explain more later i'm assuming?" Bucky asks and Mary nods, they didn't have time for deep explanations right now. They had a job to do. "Then let's say goodbye to Jamie then and head to the labs." The husband says and Mary can only nod in agreement as they step over to where Ramonda is with Jamie.

"Sunshine? Baba and I need to leave now. You keep Ramonda safe, okay?" Mary tells her son as she crouches down to his height. His hazel eyes cloud with tears as his lip quivers. He didn't want to part with his beloved Umama and Baba. He wanted to help, but he knew he was too young to help.

"Uh huh. I keep Monie safe." Jamie vows and then wraps his arms around Mary tightly. Bucky scoops up Jamie into his arms a few seconds later to say his goodbyes.

"We'll be back to get you soon." Bucky states. "Have fun for us." He tells his son who nods.

"I will, Baba. You can count on me." Jamie swears to his father and Bucky fights back his instincts to take Jamie and Mary and run away from all of this looming danger and threats. He sets Jamie back down and pulls Mary into his arms.

"He will be safe with me." Ramonda says, "Take care in knowing no harm will befall him."

Mary and Bucky both nod, they thank Ramonda before leaving the room and going their separate ways. Bucky was to go back outside to hang around Sam and Pietro along with Rhodey to oversee things outside while Mary would go to the labs to aid Shuri in Vision's ordeal with the Mind Stone.

Shuri scans Vision with her Kimoyo Beads as he lies on the table in front of her and Mary. She pulls up a spec and hologram of the Mind Stone on both Mary and her's Kimoyo Beads. Bruce stares in awe at the two women and the hologram hovering in the palms.

"Whoa." Bruce mutters.

"The structure is polymorphic." Shuri states and Mary nods in agreement as she steps over to stand beside Shuri as the two go over the specs.

"Right, we had to attach each neuron non-sequentially." Bruce explains and Mary nods again, remembering that night she, Tony and Bruce worked on bringing Vision to life back in Avengers Tower. Wanda and Steve both watch those they love carefully and on edge. The brother keeps a neutral face but deep down he loved watching his sister thrive in Wakanda. The people who hadn't seen her since Germany or before then were still in semi shock over how well Mary worked with Shuri and the others.

"Why didn't you just reprogram the synapses to work collectively?" Shuri asks Mary and Bruce. The two doctors look at each other, embarrassed. Vision on the table raises his non-existent eyebrows at Bruce.

"Because.. we didn't think of it..?" Bruce mutters and Mary chuckles softly under her breath.

"I was stressed that night." Mary says and Steve can be heard chuckling softly under his breath as he nods in agreement with his sister's statement briefly.

"I'm sure you did your best." Shuri teases then looks at Mary but Wanda speaks up.

"Can you two do it?" The Sokovian woman asks. Mary knew the pain Wanda was in very intimately. The pain of losing the one you loved above all others was unbearable. And she never wanted Wanda to suffer through what Mary had.

Shuri and Mary look at each other, then look back at Wanda and nod. "Yes, but there are more than two trillion neurons here." Mary states, motioning to the hologram in her palm of the Mind Stone.

"One misalignment could cause a cascade of circuit failures." Shuri adds, then looks over at her brother, "It will take time, brother."

Mary looks over at T'Challa and nods, "I can aid here. I helped create Vision, it's possible with my help, it can go a bit faster." She says to her king and best friend.

"How long?" Steve asks sternly and concerned.

"As long as you can give us." Shuri replies just as an alarm goes off above them and Okoye's Kimoyo Beads ring.

Okoye pulls up a hologram of the earth and sucks in a breath before speaking, "Something's entered the atmosphere." She says nervously.

Mary's eyes widen as she steps over to her brother to make herself feel safe. Just like she always did. Steve pulls her close as Sam speaks into their coms. "Hey, Cap, we got a situation here." As he finishes his update, Mary looks out the window and up at the sky, seeing a giant ship of some kind collide with the barrier over Wakanda.

"Gosh, i love this place." Bucky quips under his breath and Mary's heart sinks when she remembers her husband and she will be fighting in this battle one way or the other. They both have a part to play in this nightmare filled reality that they've been forced into living.

"Don't start celebrating yet guys. We got more incoming outside the dome." Rhodey warns his teammates and friends.

"Steve.." Mary mutters nervously. Her brother looks down at her, he doesn't say anything, but his eyes say it all. He's scared too, but they have a job to do. A world to protect and people to keep safe. They had to do this because no one else was. They had lived in the shadows too long. T'Challa and Steve then make eye contact and they both know that it's time for the battle to begin.

"It's too late." Vision says weakly as he attempts to sit up on the table, "We need to destroy the stone now." He pleads with them and Mary gasps as she turns around the look at her teammate. Destroying the stone embedded in his forehead would kill him.

"Vision, get your ass back on the table." Natasha states as she steps over to make Vision do as he's told.

T'Challa steps towards the Rogers siblings, "We will hold them off." He tells them and Steve nods.

The former Captain turns to Wanda and leads his team like he always did, "Wanda, as soon as that stone's out of his head, you blow it to hell." He tells the Sokovian woman.

Mary steps over to Wanda and the two women hold each other tightly as Wanda nods at Steve, "I will." She swears to him. When Mary and Wanda break apart, the advisor turns to her king as he takes command of the room.

"Evacuate the city. Engage all defenses." T'Challa commands the Dora and the Kingsguard and then turns to Steve, pointing to him and Mary can't help but smirk, "And get this man a shield."

Steve turns from the window to look at T'Challa, a silent thank you is exchanged with a slight nod.
