Island 8. [Real or Imagination?]
The toes of the feet that were wrapped in the dull shoes quickly kicked the floor, as well as the index finger that tapped on the wooden table non-stop, making a repetitive sound in the small dark room. The sun had already set a few hours ago, but there was no intention of going back and curling up in her warm blanket in the cold season.
With the rickety wood and the cobwebs that filled the place, it was obvious the owner didn't have enough resources for maintenance.
Sharp and unfriendly eyes had trouble welcoming them since the first time the two set foot there. Their presence seemed to bring an air of hostility, even though the 'culprit' herself did not know why they were being treated this way.
"You sure we're not lost in some cannibal outback?" Anne whispered, doubtful with a smile that still lingered on the lips of the woman beside her.
Instead of getting an answer, Anne is completely ignored by an old woman, who she thinks is the headman.
"Greetings, Elder Ah Kum. It's been a long time since I've seen you in the upper society. I even thought you gave up on life."
'Wow, her mouth turns out to be even more sarcastic than Cleopatra and El Naddaha,' slowly Anne glanced forward, and oh how surprised she didn't find her eyebrows furrowed at the words just now. 'A grown woman's life, it's horrifying.'
"Say what you want, Victoria. If it's about that so-called 'brainless' thing, then I will no longer welcome you like this." Anne could be sure if she caught a glimpse of how anger filled the expressions of the villagers. One thing is very sure here, it will not be easy to complete their mission.
Instead, Victoria smiled, and pulled down the cloak that always covered her face, showing a blonde with emerald beads that glowed slightly in the darkness.
"Sorry, at that time I was too childish and even judged you, I even unilaterally rejected all your letters to the Vatican even though I knew it was not my right."
'No wonder you're hated, do all the women I have to meet have this kind of attitude!?' Again, Anne's gaze was fixated on the expressions of the villagers, especially Ah Kum. She looked angry, but her mouth could not say a word.
Then surprisingly, Anne and Ah Kum's eyes met. There was a pause of a few seconds, enough to make Anne feel cold goosebumps, very cold to be precise.
"Ah, I haven't introduced her to you yet. This child will help solve your problems."
Before Anne could open her mouth, the wooden stick that Ah Kum was holding was kicked loudly. “Who do you think you are!? Do you think our problems are child's play to be left to anyone!? You're only going to make things worse!”
Alright, this time Anne admitted she was a little provoked by Ah Kum's words. "I beg your pardon in advance, Elder. My name is Anne, if you will please I have great fortune in overcoming sea and land problems. How about you take a look at what I did in your abandoned land?"
Those words drew great anger from the residents, but with one hand raised, Ah Kum managed to hold back the crowd behind her. "I hope you don't just talk with your big mouth, little girl. I need to tell you, you can't 'see' this problem with your eyes."
Who would have thought that this warning would make the adrenaline that had disappeared burn back up in her.
***
The wind blew and dust flew into her face, the clouds covered the moonlight, making the night even darker. Residents' houses have turned off the lights and closed every door and window. Only noise and disturbing voices entered her hearing.
Like the howls of beasts and the scratches of rusty iron, a strange air that made goosebumps stand right in front of her.
"Have you guessed the shape yet?" Victoria confirmed once more. It was true that she had brought Anne to a place where there were bad rumors about evil ghosts that disappeared humans, and this village was the last place where 'that' existence was shown.
Many residents disappeared at night and were found drying up dead the next morning. There were no visible wounds like they had completely dried up overnight.
"What am I supposed to see in the ugly wisps of smoke? Their true existence is gone, only the desire for selfishness manifests itself to form like its owner."
"It turns out you can also make difficult sentences like that."
This time Anne replied with a smile, "somehow I feel I'm used to this kind of thing. I even thought I was also part of them, invisible to the crowd and strangely always burning with emotion. Little did I know, I was just ignored, like completely abandoned."
GRWALL!
Anne prepared her position, and so did Victoria. Both of them held rosaries and a silver dagger in Anne's hands. Her smile remains, maybe this is one way to 'let go' of what has made her uneasy lately.
"Who knows if I die, no one will ignore me anymore," she muttered starting their purification mission as ghostbusters that night.
