die, pod!

Ever since Benny and Olivia had gotten together, they'd become inseparable, until Benny stupidly convinced Ethan into doing something that would get them into detention and the job of pulling out weeds in the school fields - and Olivia definitely wasn't doing that.

"Tell me the story again!" Sarah said to Olivia as they walked down the school hallways looking for Erica.

She groaned. "It's so sad that you're obsessed over Benny and I, get yourself a boyfriend, girl!"

Sarah laughed and shook her head.
"Ethan, maybe?" Olivia raised an eyebrow.

"No way!" She answered, hitting Olivia.
Sarah and Olivia saw Erica talking to Rory and they both laughed when they noticed they were wearing matching clothes.

"Don't say anything! I'm going home to change my shirt." Erica said.

Olivia and Sarah sniggered. "I guess they finally found another thing in common. This means Rory can try even harder to get a date with Erica and fail." Olivia remarked.

Later that day Olivia was sat with Sarah, who was harshly hitting her laptop. "Perhaps you should be a little more gentle..." Olivia suggested.

Ethan came along and sat on the empty seat beside Sarah. "You know the buttons are on the front, right?"

"Hey, Ethan. Have you seen Benny? I haven't seen all day because I don't really wanna help you and him pick out weeds from the school fields." Olivia asked.

Ethan shrugged. "I don't know, he said he went to the toilet and I haven't seen him since."

"Ugh! I think I have a virus." Sarah said. "Can you, y'know, geek this thing for me?" She asked, handing it to Ethan.

"Sure." He smiled, clicking his knuckles. "No - ow! - problem."

"Thanks, Ethan! If you do this for me I'll be grateful till the day you die. I would say till the day I die, but I have this whole immortal thing going on." She stood up and took hold of Olivia's arm. "Let's go find your boyfriend, later, Ethan!"

***

After about ten minutes of looking for Benny, Olivia got a text from him: he told her and Sarah to meet them in the main hallway.

"Hey, guys." Sarah said to Ethan, Benny and Rory.

Once Benny and Olivia saw each-other they hugged, since they hadn't seen each-other for a whole day. Benny put his arm around Olivia. "So, how's the weed picking going?" She asked.
"Could be better." Benny answered.

"Erica and I totally like the same band!" Rory exclaimed, pointing at his t-shirt.

"Single Tear?" Ethan read it out. "Aren't those songs about how hard it is to be them?"

"Yeah, they totally speak to me. They're rich and famous, I'm a vampire - nobody get us." Rory explained.
"Deep." Olivia joked.

Rory frowned before putting his earphones into his ears. Ethan saw weeds coming out of the earphones and snatched them away before they reached his ears.

"What was that?!" Rory, Sarah and Olivia asked in unison.
A girl who was listening to music and who seemed to be in a trance then slowly walked past.

"Okay, something's not right." Ethan stated.
"The music industry is finally fighting back illegal downloads!" Benny said.

"No! But this is messed up." Ethan responded.
"Messed up with clutch tunes! Can I have it back?" Rory asked, reaching for his MP3 player.

"Not a chance." Olivia said.
"But you can tell us the last place you plugged it in." Ethan added.
"Follow me." Rory grinned.

***

"My parents won't let me download at home; they think the Internet is a bad influence." Rory explained, leading his friends into the computing room.

"You're already a soulless, undead creature of the night. How much worse can you get?" Benny asked, letting his girlfriend through the door first.

"Dude, if my mom found out I was a vampire I'd be grounded for like... a month!" Rory answered.

Benny and Olivia looked at each-other and furrowed their brows.

"I've got 80% of my love life downloaded." Rory exclaimed. "By tomorrow, I predict that Erica and I will interface!"
Olivia laughed.

"Hey!" Ethan said, looking down at some wires on the floor. "Did that wire just move?" He asked his friends, he picked the wires and Olivia winced. "What is that?"

Ethan touched the gooey substance. "Our homework." He grimaced.

***

Later that night Olivia and Benny went round Ethan's house after he practically forced them too. "We were gonna cuddle up and watch a film and everything." Olivia complained to Benny.

"Sorry, guys, but I need help with this." Ethan said, looking through his microscope at the goo from earlier.

"You literally ruined the one chance I had of kissing and cuddling with Olivia!" Benny hissed at Ethan.

He scoffed. "One? You'll have tons, don't worry about it. Chlorophyll, palmer, ectoplasm? It's like a supernatural weed!" Ethan said, going back into to nerd mode.

"There's plant matter in the cables?" Benny asked him.
"No, they're combined." Ethan corrected. "Half alive and half plastic."

Olivia switched off when they went into full on geek mode but switched back on when Benny started talking about having eyes on his feet.

"You'd get a black eye every time you kicked something." Ethan laughed.
"Nah! Just wear special see-through shoes." Benny shrugged.

Olivia then noticed that Sarah's laptop looked totally fine. "That's weird, look at Sarah's laptop." Olivia said to Ethan.

"Maybe it's a hardware problem." Ethan suggested, scratching the back of his neck. He tried to try something and see if anything worked but the screen then went black.

"It smells mouldy," Benny sniffed. "like my grandma's sock draw." He remarked.

"Let's open this thing up." Ethan said, taking hold of the laptop.
Olivia felt as she was gonna throw up once she saw all the green goo inside of it. "Ew!"

"Circuit salad, ugh!" Benny said.
"It's probably the same as Rory's MP3 and the cables in the computer lab." Olivia suggested.

"Computers, cables, MP3 players... I think I have a theory!" Benny stated.
"Really?" Ethan asked.

"My theory is that you should be able to figure this out." Benny said.
Olivia laughed. "I knew you wouldn't have come up with a theory all by yourself."

Benny turned around and glared at her. She ran back and fell onto Ethan's bed. Benny chased after her. He jumped on top of his girlfriend, tickling her. "You dare say something like that again and next time I'll tickle your feet!" He said to Olivia, who was laughing.

She nodded. "Okay! Okay!" Benny stopped tickling her and grinned, before pecking her lips. "Great." He got off of her and walked back over to Ethan. "Not on my bed when I'm here guys." He mumbled, staring at the goo in Sarah's laptop, he then continued. "I was actually thinking there's something strange growing the school's computer network."

"That's it! I knew I was onto something!" Benny joked.
"We've gotta get back to the school and stop this thing." Ethan said, standing up.

"I have another theory: how about you go and stop this thing whilst Olivia and I continue our movie night." Benny smiled.

Ethan shot him a glare and Benny sighed. "Fine. But this is the last time you interrupt our date!"
"Our first date." Olivia added.

Ethan ignored them. Olivia rolled her eyes. "We better follow him." She said Benny. He nodded, took hold of her hand and followed him out.

***

Olivia, Benny and Ethan entered the school. The lighting was green the lights emitting the green were slowly fading. "Do you remember the school being so ominous and terrifying this afternoon?" Benny asked his friends.

"I do." Olivia joked.
Ethan laughed a little. "It's not so bad. It's just a creepy hallway with flashing lights... yeah it's terrifying!"

"Let's just get this over with." Olivia sighed, walking into the computer room. The two boys looked at each-other and nodded.

All the computer screens were green and all the keyboards were green too, with a shade of brighter green buttons on it.

"I think we're too late..." Ethan said.
Olivia's eyes fell upon a girl with her earphones in - it was the girl from earlier. Her eyes were wide open, her skin was pale and she was slumped over the desk, with weeds all over her.

"Man, this stuff spreads fast." Benny said, once he saw the girl too.
"This girl is garnished." Ethan said. "What do we do?" Olivia asked.

"I think we need some sort of weed killer." Benny said. "I am not pulling any weeds out of this girl's face."

"You and Olivia go to the chemistry lab and I'll call Sarah." Ethan said. The couple nodded and ran to the nearest chemistry lab.

Benny fumbled around for the right substances whilst Olivia just sat there and let her boyfriend geek away. He then threw Olivia a spray bottle kept one spare for Ethan.

"Okay," Benny said, walking back into the computer room and passing Ethan his spray bottle. "Let's whack some weeds."

Ethan looked at Olivia. "Worst catch phrase ever, I know."

Benny held out his spray in front of the girl.
"Wait! We don't wanna burn her face." Olivia pointed out.

"Spray her roots - I mean, legs." Ethan told him.
"Can I use my line again?" Benny grinned.
"I'd rather if you didn't." Ethan said.
Benny ignored him. "Let's whack some weeds!"

The girl's legs started to shake and the computer she was slumped over because to make noises. "Stop!" Ethan and Olivia said.

Olivia saw Ethan's eyes go white before he snapped back into reality.

"What'd you see?" Olivia asked him.
"A tree... it was angry?" Ethan seemed almost surprised by his own answer.
"How could you tell? Was it choking squirrels?" Benny asked.

Olivia rolled her eyes. "Is that the first thing that came to your mind?"

"Oh, man!" Rory suddenly said from behind them. "I was hoping you guys would have this fixed by now! It didn't screw up my download, did it?" Rory looked at his computer.

"Maybe we should look up your angry tree online?" Benny asked Ethan.
"Not here. Something tells me that it's not a good idea to touch these computers!" Ethan said, directing it at Rory.

Benny then took out Sarah's laptop. "Looks like the school's wireless is down - I'm not getting any signal."

"We'll do it from my place." Ethan said.
"What about her?" Olivia pointed at the girl.

"We should move her until we know what's going on." Ethan replied.
"Shall we call a doctor? Gardner? Cable guy?" Benny suggested, Olivia stared at him.

"Could we just put her out in the sun and water her?" Rory joked, Benny laughed.

"We better go now." Olivia said, taking hold of Benny's hand and Ethan's arm. "Be careful, Rory!" She called back at him.

When the teens returned to Ethan's, Sarah was already in Ethan's room doing some research.

Benny and Olivia were lying on Ethan's bed again, with their feet on his pillow, resting their chins on their arms, whilst Olivia also played with his hair.

"Looks like the oldest tree in town just cut down last week." Ethan said.
"It's right next to the school." Olivia pointed out.

"It was once popular with local Druids..."
"So this magic tree gets knocked down and now wants... what? Revenge?" Sarah asked, confused.

"Well, if somebody cuts me off at the shins, they're gonna hear about it." Ethan joked.

"So what does this have to do with our school?" Benny pondered.
"Well, like Principal Hicks said: to kill the weeds, you've gotta cut out the roots." Ethan quoted.

"Time to do some gardening!" Benny grinned, getting up.
"Please don't-" Olivia began.
"Time to whack some w-"
"Really?" Ethan cut him.
Benny's grin dropped. "What? It's all I got!"

***

"There it is... or was." Sarah sighed as the teenagers looked at the tree which was nothing but wood and nubs of branches.

"That is one freaky stump." Benny said. "Do you think a tree could hold a grudge."

"For what?"
"I carved my name into it ... Benny loves Olivia." Benny said, sheepishly.
Olivia awed. "Benny, that's so cute! And kind of weird..."

Sarah sighed. "What do we do?"
"Well, looks like the only way to stop it is to cut the root." Ethan suggested.

The four followed the trees roots, which lead to the school. "Looks like we found the mother root." Ethan said. "The school's internet cables run through here; these crazy roots are growing right into them."

"Does this mean more yard work?" Benny groaned.
"Let's get this thing open." Olivia said, Ethan helped her, but they couldn't open it. "Do you think something's holding it shut?" She asked him.
Ethan nodded. "Something strong."

"Maybe there's some haunted Venus fly trap who's trying to get illegal paperview?" Benny joked, he started to laugh but stopped when he saw the look Sarah and Olivia were giving him.

"Cutting the roots should kill it," Ethan began. "then we can save vegetable girl."
"Yeah! It's gardening time!" Benny grinned.
"Is that the best you can do?" Sarah asked.
"Pretty much." He answered, with his hands in his pockets.

The teenagers picked up tools to help kill the roots such as Benny's potion he made up in the science lap and weed cutters. The then heard the sound of screaming - both a boy and a girl. The boys sounded a lot like Rory's.

"That's Rory's scream!" Ethan stated.
Olivia scoffed. "Well, duh, he sounds like a girl."
Ethan rolled his eyes. "We need to help him!"

When the group ran into the hallway, the lights were flashing again and roots were all over the lockers.

"Did anyone else just loose their job well done feeling?" Ethan said.
"Wait," Olivia spun around, realising her boyfriend was nowhere to be seen. "where's Benny?"

Benny then appeared with an axe.
"Holy-" Olivia said, "where did you get that?"

"Janitor's closet - always upgrade before a boss level!"
"I kinda like the look of Benny holding an axe and I'd like it more if you weren't such a nerd about it." Olivia laughed.
Sarah laughed along. "Okay, seriously guys, let's go."

The four walked into the computer room and almost dropped their weapons at the state of it.

In the corner of the room, was a large nest made out of weeds and in it was sat a possessed Rory. "You shall not destroy me!" He said in a deep voice.
"I will build a new forest fertilised by human souls!"

"We're fighting an angry tree and its upgraded its hardware - with Rory!" Ethan yelled over the loud noises. "This things mostly cable and computer now; we can't just spray it weed killer! It's half tree and half computer maybe a virus can infect the system and take this thing down!" Ethan ran to the computer.

"You can't just get a computer virus!" Olivia yelled, dragging away the hair that blew in front of her face behind her ears.

"Benny, you've hacked into a computer system before, right? Just cover me!" Ethan said to his best friend.

"Cover you with what?!" Benny screamed.
"Just keep killing and don't let me get killed, okay?"

Benny kept hacking away at the weeds whilst Olivia hit them with a shovel.

Ethan began to hack into the computer system.
"Parasites!" 'Rory' yelled at them.
"I'm gonna pone you, noob!" Benny shouted, storming towards him. Rory then took hold of Benny's ankles, causing him to fall and drop is axe, slowly dragging Benny towards him.

Olivia began to panic. "His axe!" Sarah yelled, pointing at it. Olivia picked it up and began to hack at the roots around his ankles.

Once Benny was free he scrambled up and ran towards Olivia. "Thanks, babe! But I totally could've taken him!"

"Hey, tree boy! Get ready to be Neck Roll'd!" Ethan yelled at the creature.
"No!" The monster yelled out once a video off NoobyTube came on.

All the computers powered off and Rory fell to the floor. "Rory!" Ethan called, running over to him. "Are you okay?"

"Guys, I had the weirdest dream: I was made out of carrots and I got neck roll'd."

"Haha..." Ethan laughed, awkwardly.

***

Benny agreed to walk Olivia home since it was dark and late outside. "Thanks again for helping me when Mr. Angry Tree almost got me."

Olivia chuckled. "It's fine, don't worry about it."

Benny put his arm around her waist and pulled her closer, kissing her temple.

Olivia smiled and looked up at him. "You're actually a lot less dorkier than you were when we first met."
"Really?" He asked, excitedly.

She nodded and looked over Benny's shoulder. "That's my house." She sighed, loosening herself from her boyfriend's grip. "I'll see you tomorrow, yeah?"

He nodded and kissed her again, this time on the lips. "See you tomorrow, I love you."

"I love you too!" Olivia called out as she made her way to her doorstep.
