(VI) What's the Buzz?
Sighing, Felix tapped his foot impatiently as the elevator slowly made its way up to his floor. He took a deep, preparing breath as the doors opened, revealing his office space. Felix only had one foot into the office before Jasmine had accosted him, grabbing his shoulders.
"You were recorded by SHANE BECKER?!" Jasmine screeched. Felix winced at the volume, gently pushing her hands off of him.
"Yeah, he was there when I was playing this past weekend."
"He wasn't just there, he fucking recorded it! You're literally going viral!"
Felix froze at that word. Viral. "I am?"
Jasmine quickly pulled out her phone, tapping it before shoving it into Felix's face. "Look!"
Pushing it to a distance where he didn't become cross-eyed, Felix gently held the sides of Jasmine's phone. Sure enough, Felix was displayed on the screen. He was standing by the piano in the mall, his violin in hand. Beautiful melodies flowed from Felix's fingertips, his body swaying slightly as the bow ran across the strings. Even though Felix could vividly remember doing it, he watched the video in amazement, getting lost in his own music.
Felix was ripped from the trance as Jasmine tore her phone away from him. "I can't believe you didn't call me right away!"
"I passed out when I got home, there wasn't much time for me to call you," Felix had actually stayed up for several hours after getting home, staring at his phone.
Felix hadn't been able to believe that a social media personality actually gave him his number. Firstly, Felix felt it was highly irresponsible of him to do, since he had known Felix for only a few moments. Shane had no way of knowing if Felix was the type of person to share his number with the public. But also, the idea of Shane Becker giving his number to Felix, a regular person on the street, wasn't clicking in Felix's head.
After looking at the phone sitting on the bed in front of him, his gaze unmoving, Felix took a deep breath. He snatched the phone before he could rethink his actions and quickly sent a text to Shane, checking about a time to meet up to film. Before Felix could put his phone down, Shane had responded, confirming the information.
Since then, Shane had texted sporadically, asking Felix random get-to-know-you questions. At first Felix thought it was slightly strange, but he quickly assumed they were so it wouldn't be so awkward the next time they met. He would answer with short replies, making sure not to take up too much of Shane's time.
Now, having watched the video of himself playing, Felix pulled out his phone. He went to Shane's contact, quickly typing out a message.
Did you post the recording from last weekend?
"Who are you texting?" Jasmine quizzed. "Is that Shane? Oh my god, do you have Shane's number?!"
"Yes, it's Shane," Felix stated duly.
"You say that like it's the most casual thing ever to have the phone number of an internet celebrity with millions of followers."
"He's a person too, and I only have his number so we can set up a time for him to film me again."
Jasmine slapped Felix's arm. "You get to see him again? Like, guaranteed?"
Felix shrugged. "Yeah."
"Stop sounding so casual! This is not casual! This is not normal!"
"This isn't world-ending either!"
"I'd beg to differ," Jasmine cleared her throat, smirking. "Now, tell me what he's like."
Felix rolled his eyes. "Jasmine, I've talked to him for maybe two minutes. For me to say what he's like is what it would be like for you to talk about your experiences as a gay man."
Jasmine furrowed her brows. "But I'm not a gay man."
"Exactly."
"This doesn't seem like a work appropriate conversation."
The moment the voice spoke up from behind Felix, he knew he was screwed. Taking a deep breath, he slapped on his fake-polite face and turned around to face his boss, who was standing with his arms crossed and an eyebrow raised.
"Care to explain why it's several minutes past the start of your shift, and you're just standing here outside the cubicles?" His boss asked, his body language mimicking a python that was ready to strike.
"We were discussing the financial plans for next quarter," Jasmine piped up. "I didn't want to forget to ask him about some of the budget so I stopped him the moment I saw him."
The boss glanced between Jasmine and Felix, smiling coldly. "I would believe that if I hadn't heard discussion of gay men."
"I was saying that because Felix was gay he was probably better with money decisions than me."
"And is that what you believe?"
"Well, sort of, yes."
Felix's boss turned towards him, tilting his head. "Do you believe that, Felix?"
"Not entirely, no."
"Not entirely? But you still believe it, even if it's only a little?"
Felix glanced around nervously. "I guess?"
"So that's what you believe? That you're better at something just because you're gay? Would you go so far as to say you're better than me, simply because of your sexuality?"
Felix could practically hear the color drain from Jasmine's face as she realized the problem she had caused. Felix's heart began to beat faster as his brain switched into flight mode, wanting to flee as fast as he could. But his feet remained planted, and he was forced to stare down his boss, who was almost seeming to grow with power.
"No," Felix managed to say. His boss raised an eyebrow.
"Really? Just a moment ago you said you believed it, just a little. Are you saying you lied to me about your confidence in your abilities?"
Felix could sense the trap he was stuck in, but he tried to fight it. "No, that's not what I'm-"
"So you do believe you're better than me, simply because you like a different gender?"
"I was saying that-"
"That what?" His boss interrupted, taking a step forward. "That you're better with money than me? That you do your job better than I ever could?"
"I didn't say-"
"But you thought it, didn't you? You think you're better than me."
"I don't think that!"
"Watch your tone!" His boss snapped. "You do not yell at your superiors unless you want to lose your job."
Felix clamped his mouth shut. He could feel heat radiating off of his body, anger beginning to seeth into him. His hands flexed at his sides, wanting to curl into fists but knowing the dangers of his boss seeing it. Felix took deep breaths, staring his boss down as he forced the bile to dissipate.
"I'm sorry sir," Felix grumbled, swallowing thickly. His boss smiled, standing slightly taller.
"You're lucky I'm in a good mood," his boss announced. "Now get to work. I don't want to catch you slacking off again."
With that, Felix's boss turned on his heels, marching towards his office. Felix watched, letting out a long, weary breath. He made sure his boss was gone before fully relaxing, his shoulders sagging.
"I am so sorry," Jasmine said, putting a hand on Felix's shoulder. "I really didn't know he was going to twist my words like that. I mean, I should have guessed, knowing him, but-"
"It's fine," Felix interrupted. "I know you didn't mean it."
There was awkward silence for a moment as they stood beside the cubicles. Neither wanted to move towards their cubicles, but they didn't want to push the other towards them either. After a couple of minutes, both Felix and Jasmine moved at the same time, silently filing into their respective cubicles.
Felix collapsed into his chair, taking a deep breath before letting it out in a long sigh. If his boss kept ensnaring him like that, he knew one day he wouldn't be able to stop himself from blowing up. But Felix also knew that he would never gather enough courage to reach that day.
His phone buzzed in his pocket violently. He ignored it for a moment before reaching for his pocket, pulling it out. He glanced at the lock screen, seeing a notification from Shane. Felix's gaze remained locked on the notification for a moment before opening the phone to read it.
I did post it. Are you okay with that? I assumed you were but I should've asked beforehand.
Felix sighed, rubbing his face with his free hand. He took a deep breath before replying.
Yeah I'm okay with it. I just wasn't expecting it, is all.
I'll let you know next time.
If it's any consultation, you're becoming an internet sensation.
Felix's heart began to beat rapidly at that phrase. Internet sensation. To think that it would apply to him made him slightly giddy.
Cool. Was all Felix said, despite how it actually made him feel.
Felix set down his phone with yet another sigh. The weekend would hit him before he knew it, and he'd be standing in front of Shane again, playing violin for some silly video.
Some silly video that might make you famous. He chided himself.
The thought of fame quickly made him feel anxious again, the idea sparking the same emotions as viral or internet sensation. Felix took quick breaths, trying to calm himself. He had a full day of work ahead. He'd already had a horrible encounter with his boss, and he didn't want to have another one on the same day. Too many bad experiences with his boss, and he might end up unemployed.
And what kind of famous person is unemployed?
