Chapter Four
Sara's apartment was a quaint little place. The kitchen and the sitting area were connected, and there was one bathroom and two bedrooms. There wasn't much furniture - a couch, two beds, basic kitchen stuff, a dresser in each room, and a strange, thin black box Lily didn't recognize sitting on a cabinet in the sitting area.
"What's that?" Lily asked, pointing at the strange black box."
"That - Lily, that's a TV!" Sara asked as though Lily should know this. "I get that it isn't a flat screen or anything, but surely you could tell that was a TV, right?!"
"Er - yes, of course, I was just messing with you." Lily replied, suddenly feeling very awkward." Sara looked at her strangely, but quickly shrugged it off. What person hadn't heard of television?
"Well, it's been a long day, Lily. Your rooms the first one on the right, the bathroom is right across from it." Sara directed, and Lily set off to find her room.
Lily's room was small, with a bat window and a full sized mattress pressed against the back wall in the middle of the room. Other than that, it was completely bare. Plain walls, plain, carpeted floor, nothing.
Lily got to work, dumping out the old bag her Aunt Hermione had given her, which contained Lily's Hollyhead Harpies comforter, a bookshelf already stocked, her Gryffindor banner, a trunk for clothes, and other knick knacks Lily had acquired over the years.
Lily set to work, first making her bed and setting up her bookshelf and stuffing her trunk into her closet. Then she went on to other, more minor details. Turning her room red and gold. Allowing her old, white cat, Bob, to stretch his legs. Hanging up her Gryffindor banner and some family photos.
It was midnight, and Sara was pissed.
Lily's antics had kept her up all night. And whilst she did enjoy the occasional sound of Lily crashing into something and muttering a string of curse words, she was seriously beginning to regret taking in a girl she had only known for six hours - fellow witch or not. Finally, Sara got up and marched in the direction of Lily's room.
"WHAT IN THE NAME OF MERLIN'S BRIGHT PINK BOXERS IS GOING ON HERE?" Sara shouted, steam practically pouring out of her ears. Lily gave her an innocent smile.
"I'm redecorating."
"Well redecorate after I've slept and had my morning coffee!" Sara argued, not even a little bit amused. Lily held her hands up and smirked.
"Alright alright - I'll just work a little louder - I'm only joking Sara put that fork away!" Lily shouted, ducking behind her bed.
Sara smirked, and marched back to her room, grateful for the peace and quiet.
By ten o'clock next morning, Lily was still asleep in her room. Seeing an opportunity to get Lily back for waking her last night, Sara grabbed a bottle of shaving cream, a feather, and a sharpie.
Sara crept into the room, quiet as a mouse. Carefully, she unscrewed the shaving cream and poured about half of it into Lily's hand. Next, she took a sharpie and contemplated what to draw.
"Hmm...." She tapped the sharpie against her jaw, thinking. "What to draw...."
Finally, Sara decided on a comb mustache, stubble, and a unibrow. Grabbing her old Polaroid, Sara snapped a picture of the sight.
"Well this sure as hell is getting mailed to everyone I know."
Lily awoke to a tickling sensation under her nose and something cold and goopy on her face. She immediately recognized this prank as one she had helped James pull on Albus in her second year. At least James had been kind enough to use whipped cream, though. She wiped the substance from her eyes and turned to give Sara a murderous look.
"You'll pay for this." She warned, rubbing more sleep and shaving cream from her eyes.
"I'll buy you more pizza." Sara offered, and Lily's answer was instant.
"Deal. Just..... No more pranks, for a while at least." She said as she got up to wash the shaving cream from her face.
"SARA!"
Sara eyed Lily from across the room. She had done nothing as a payback to Sara yet, so Sara could only hope that Lily was still pleased with the prospect of pizza.
"Hey," Sara looked up, frightened, to see Lily.
"Can I borrow your owl?"
"O- of course!" Sara stammered, then frowned. "Wait, why do you need an owl?"
Lily looked at her like she had just asked what witches were. "To mail this letter, of course." Lily said, holding up the letter, addressed to her cousin Hugo.
"No..... You would use a crow to mail a letter." Sara stated as though conversing with an infant - or James.
"Why in the name of Merlin - you know what? Just give me the bloody bird!" Sara jumped up. "Of course, Lily!" She said before rushing out.
Lily sat back and smirked. Sara had no idea what Lily was playing at - because Lily wasn't playing at anything. Well, not exactly. She was more watching Sara squirm and getting a lot out of it.
Five minutes later, Sara walked in with a determined look on her face.
"Listen - Lily, I said sorry about the prank this morning, right? And you can barely see the sharpie anymore, so we're cool right. You're not gonna try and get back at me?"
Lily smirked. "Of course not, Sara - said girls shoulders relaxed - "because I already did."
"Huh?" Sara asked, confused.
"Think, Sara. Did you really have to buy me those doughnuts this morning?"
Lily asked patiently.
"No, but- HEY!"
