Chapter 10
And so the month passed. Sara stressed over her call back, and Lily and Everett continued to meet up each week, every Wednesday at 4. And the days went on, until on the 31st, Sara gathered Everett and Lily into her apartment for a "group discussion."
"Okay." Sara clasped her hands together, facing Lily and Everett, who were seated side by side like school children on the floor.
"Here's how this is gonna go: Lily and Everett, you too are gonna decorate the front door. I am going to go out and buy two bags of candy. We dump half of each bag into a bowl, and pig out on the rest as we binge wash trashy Halloween movies." She grinned at the two. Lily eyed her skeptically.
"Why can't we just not give the kids nothing and keep the candy for ourselves?" Lily asked. Everett and Sara's jaws dropped.
"Lily! That's so cruel!" Everett protested. Lily looked confused.
"What? Everyone else gonna be giving them candy. If anything, parents will be thanking us!"
"No, Lily." Sara sighed. "We have to give them candy because if the kids are happy, the parents are happy. And if the parents are happy, they're happy with us. And if they're happy with us, that means babysitting jobs. And babysitting jobs means-"
"Money." Lily smiled in an almost cold way. Everett glances between the two with exasperation.
"What is wrong with you guys?!" He asked in disbelief. "Are you two honestly using a holiday about the kids to make a few extra bucks?!" Lily and Sara stared down at their feet.
"Maybe." They mumbled.
"You two go to your rooms! And no trying to talk to each other, either! I am going to set up Halloween, while you think about your actions. Now go!" Lily and Sara skunked off, proud grins on their faces.
"What's up with him?" Sara asked, and raised one eyebrow.
"He used to be a second grade teacher." Lily explained. "It still shows through sometimes."
"I HEARD THAT!" Everett's voice echoed from the other room. Lily and Sara parted giggles, before going their separate ways.
Two hours later, Lily finally dashed out of her room and into the bathroom, locking the door with inhuman speed as she sat down with a sigh of relief.
After relieving herself, she walked into the living room to find that Everett had done.... Nothing, aside from buying candy and placing pumpkins around the house.
"I thought you were gonna decorate!" Lily protested.
"I did!"
"You put fake pumpkins around the room and bought candy!"
"It's not my apartment!"
"Girls, girls. You're both beautiful, now would you please shut the hell up so I can get some sleep?!" Lily and Everett turned to see Sara walk in, still clutching her pillow as though it were her lifeline.
"Sara..... it's 4 in the afternoon." Lily said. "Why are you sleeping?"
"Because we will be up all night scaring the living shit out of each other and watching horror movies, so I need my beauty sleep." She explained, and Lily nodded.
"Good point. Good night." And with that, she flopped onto the couch, unconscious.
As difficult as it may be to believe, by 5:30 Everett, Lily, and Sara were all gathered by the front door, dressed up as, to Everett's disgust, the Schuyler sisters.
Sara, seeing as she had auditioned for the role in the first place, was Angelica. Lily, being practically her sister and quite close to her, was Eliza.
That left Peggy for poor Everett.
And so, in honor of their costumes, they would recite the same routine each time someone came to the door.
"Work, work.
Angelica!" Sara's voice floated throughout the hall.
"Work, work-
Eliza!" Lily's came out as a bird - like screech.
"And Peggy." Everett twirled his finger unenthusiastically, a bored look on his face as his dress brushed just above his ankles.
"The Schuyler sisters!" They tried - and failed - to harmonize.
"Angelica!"
"Peggy."
"ElIZa!"
"Work!"
The kids and their parents laughed each time, mainly at the three teens, not necessarily for their costume idea.
By the end of the night, though, each "sister" was mentally and vocally drained.
"I swear to god, if I ever even HEAR the name Peggy again, I will drop kick that person off the Empire State Building." Everett groaned as he collapsed on the couch.
"I never want to sing again - and I like singing." Lily was already sprawled out on the floor, and Sara collapsed on top of her.
"I'm almost regretting my audition she moaned, and the two stayed there - Lily too tired to move Sara, Sara too tired to move herself.
"Weren't we supposed to watch a bunch of scary movies and scare the shit out of each other?" Everett frowned, his heavy eyes glancing up for a mere second at the girls, only to find them asleep. Everett shrugged.
"If you can't beat em, join em."
And so he did.
Picture of the Schuyler Sisters in the OBC (original broadway cast) for those who haven't ever seen them.
If you haven't listened to the soundtrack already, I highly recommend you do. Even if you aren't a hip hop/pop/rap fan, it's not hard to appreciate the beauty of the way Lin tells Hamilton's story.
Plus you'll look like a friggin' genius when your teacher talks about duels, our first four presidents, or the Revolutionary War.
Also, in honor of this Halloween chapter, what is the scariest thing you've ever watched?
Mine is probably Don't Hug Me I'm Scared or Salad Fingers. If you've never seen em, KEEP ITTHAT WAY. I HAD NIGHTMARES FOR LONGER THAN I WOULD LIKE TO ADMIT.
Peace ✌️
