Two Towns, One Fate
Hey-low guys, this is my very first fan fiction so I'm just going to apologize now if it turns out really bad. Hope you enjoy it anyway! ^-^
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I set off towards my new destination, hope and fear curdling in my stomach. My beautiful horse, Whisper, trots steadily, pulling the old cart and I towards an unknown future. I however feel anything but steady. My goodbye had been, no. I refuse to think anymore of it, I won't need to see them again, they'll dojust fine wihtout me. I brace myself and muster all my strength to put on a smile. My grip on the reigns tightens. I focus solely on making sure my hands do not shake and draw my small form up on the bench trying to look strong. That's when I completely miss the fact that a bight orange animal bolts in front of the cart. Whisper rears, a whine saturated with fear cuts the air as her hooves meet the ground. Suddenly we're whipping though this forest and I struggle to take back control. I'm standing now and almost lose my balance as she takes us over a large rut. The cart is bouncing, and I see a sharp edge in front of me. Terrified I haul on the reigns but my efforts are useless and I see pieces of the sky as the Earth seems to turn sharply.
I hope Whisper is all right.
Everything aches and my whole body feels stiff.
"Hey, are you alright?"
I blink and the sun pierces what comfort I had.
Suddenly I remember the crash and bolt upright, "WHISPER!!!"
"Well now....! It seems she's fine after all!" I focus on a tall man wearing a black trench cloak and a funny green hat. I stare at him dumbly before getting to my feet. My clothes are pretty much ruined. Mud covers the majority of the cloth and there are quite a few tears, I notice some of the fabric on my knees are stained red. I feel the stinging pain there explaining it.
"Are you hurt? It was quite a shock to find you lying there!" Surprised, I glance over and find a lady dressed in a foreign style, all red, the cloth draping elegantly on her thin form.
Mr. Trench Coat shoots a glare at her though I have no idea why,
"My horse," my voice cracks, "Have you seen a young silver mare, her name is Whisper."
"Ah, yes. Your horse has been taken care of, she was hurt in the fall but time will heal her." The man twisted his head, squinting at me, "I don't suppose you're Lillian, the one who was going to come farm here?" That's right, I'd forgotten.
"Uh, yes, I'm Lillian." I answer, finally finding my voice. It sounds off.
"Ho ho, I knew it!" I'm-wearing-a-hot-black-trench-coat-in-spring man shouts, waving a staff that's crowned with a winged horseshoe at me, "I am the mayor of the village of Bluebell down the road to your right. My name is Rutger. Why not come to my village? You'd be welcome!" Rutger. I try to lock away the name, it shouldn't be hard. The name is every bit as uncommon as the man's appearance. The foreign dressed lady whips about, the cloth of her garb fluttering in the movement.
"Who do you think you are?!? Of course she won't want to go anywhere near that village, Konohana would be perfect for her." She doesn't yell, but her voice is filled with a stern authority that seems somehow worse.
"Ahem. Sorry to act like that. I just don't wawnt you to do something you might end up regreting. I'm the mayor of the village down the path to your left. It's called Konohana," She gives Rutger a stern look, "And it's much better than Bluebell ever will be. My name's Ina."
I feel really dizy and try to refocus. Ina. Her name is Ina. Bluebell and Konohana? How did I miss that there'd be two villiages? I thought it was only one....
"And who do you think YOU are?!?" Rutger raises his voice and the trees seem to tremble. "Konohana? Better than my lovely village of Bluebell? Absurd!" They flat out glare at each other and I take a step back. A twig snaps beneath my feet and they instantly turn back to me.
"Well, Lillian," Ina begins, using a tone that seems like a challenge, "Why don't you choose the villiage you'd like to live in?"
"Of course!" Rutger cuts her off, and she splutters but he keeps on rolling, "Before you do, let me tell you a little about Bluebell!
"We pride ourselves on livestock, their glossy coats! Tails swaying in the breeze! Their soft eyes!" He's staring off into space now with a dreamy look and I have a feeling he'd forgotten about me. "Fresh milk, cheese, and eggs! In Bluebell, our animals are life long companions! Sweet ccoblestone streets wind between beautiful houses! It is the very image of country charm!" He finished his gushing speech and his eyes refocused on me, his voice full of cheer as if his village had calmed him down. "Doesn't it sound perfect? Farming means livestock, after all!" I nodded a little bit frightened to speak as Ina seemed about to explode.
"Stop talking nonsense! Farming means crops. And when it come to crops, Konohana is tops!" I feel like I'm stuck between two shampoo comeriacls.
"Now it's my turn," She sent a glare at Rutger before turning a 100 gigawatt smile on me, "Konohana is nestled among fields of crops. Tender vegatables! Sweet, scrumptious fruit! Golden waves of grain! Here crops prosper year round! Our houses are built traditionally and paper lanterns light the way among our paths, that's Konohana! Nice isn't it?" She boasted proudly, "You won't find a better place for crops in the whole world."
"So Lillian," Rutger cut her off again earning another glare," Which Village do you chose?"
Starled I glanced sharply between them. I'd forgotten why I was here.
"Well they both sound really beautiful." Eager nods from both sides, they hung on to each of my words. "But I've always loved animals and they were the true reason of why I'd always wanted to be a farmer so I'll move to Bluebell."
I watched a flash of disappointment cross Ina's face but it was gone so quickly I can't be sure it was really there. She set her shoulders and her lips set in a determined line.
Rutger on the other hand laughed and punched his walking stick into the air. "Of course, of course! Farming means livestock! It was the obvious choice." I feel guilty about his bragging and glance over at Ina to see how she's taking this.
"What's not to love about Konohana?" I hear her mumble sadly than her eyes flash and she stands even straighter than before, "What's done is done. If you change your mind, you can move to Konohana."
"I may some day." I tell her and she nods before setting off down her side of the mountain in an elegant stride."
"Come Lillian, It's time to go to Bluebell! Oh, that reminds me! I brought you some fresh clothes, I had no idea you'd need them this badly though!" He chuckled to himself as he passed a small bag and I felt a blush heat my cheeks as I glance down at just how I looked.
"Thanks." I murmur trying to sink into the ground. So much for good impressions, I looked like I rolled around in a pig sty. Probably smelled like it too.
"Let's go!" He actually started skipping down the mountain. Laughing at his enthusiasm, I ran up to him to catch up.
We had just gotten off the mountain and I paused at the entrance to the town. I took in a deep breath smelling the sweet flowers. That's when I saw a dark cave in the side of the mountain. I stopped and stared at it for a second, why would there be....
"Oh, you noticed the tunnel, it connected Bluebell to Konohana."
"Connected?" I ask, questioning the past tense.
"It got blocked a while ago" Rutger shook his head as if warding off bad memories. "Time waits for no one! Don't just stand there. Come with me, your farm is right over here." I pause for just one more second to give the tunnel one last glance before I turn to follow him.
"We're here," Rutger spun in a circle gesturing wide. "It's all yours, what would you like to name it."
I turned my head thinking as the wind blew cherry blossoms in lazy circles around us, "How about Meadow Farm?"
He gave me a warm smile, "That's a fine name for a great farm! Everything you need is here. The house is a fair size with plenty of room for pets," He gave me a wink; "The barn is expansive with a excellent pasture for grazing. The coop can even house a dozen chickens! Of course there is a bit of room if you'd like to have a small garden." He snapped his fingers. "I'm sorry, I forgot to bring you tools! I'll come by tomorrow morning with them; it's been a long day. Why don't you go inside your house and rest?" His kind eyes looked at me as if I was his daughter who had just fulfilled his dreams.
I smile, "That sounds great, thanks for everything!" I wave goodbye as he sets off. Taking a deep breath I open the door to the adorable little cottage, my house. I'm greeted with cute white washed walls and a wooden floor. The front room is cozy, a table on a rug is centered in the room, a small kitchenette in the corner. Gingham curtains are draped in the windows, light seeping through the crack. A layer of dust covers everything but it makes me smile. It feels like the house has been waiting for me, refusing anyone else. I walk across the space the door closest to me on the left side and discover a small bathroom that even has a shower. I slip back out into the main room and open the final door. A bare twin bed is pushed against the far wall, an emerald green trunk at its foot while night stand is snuggled in at its side. A small dresser sits in the corner and I run my fingers across the top. I snap my fingers, the clothes! I toss the sack on my new bed and begin to peel off the muddy layers. The spring air chills my skin as I pull on my new garment. Red leggings under a cute checkered light morning sun dress. I button on a red vest and lace up worn leather boots. Just as I'm about to stuff my ruined clothes in the bag I notice something in the bottom. Curious I reach in and my fingers meet something soft. I pull out a beautiful flower embroidered handkerchief. I smile as I use it to tie my hair back. The clothes fit me perfectly and I have a feeling someone spent a lot of time working on them, especially the handkerchief. I smile at the gesture of kindness. This is home. I spin like a little girl letting my skirt fan out before collapsing on the bed. I was home. The words had never felt so true. I close my eyes letting the day wash over me, exhausted.
I was now a resident of this town; I had a home, a piece of property to call my own. Then the crash dawned on me-Whisper! I hope she was alright. Rutger had said she was fine but I wonder which town she was in. I feel sick and I sit up, clutching the bed for support. I could go search for her, I glance at my watch. 9:00 p.m.! How did it get so late? I'm the worse owner ever. I can't go out now, it be to dark. I'm sure no more harm can come to her. Ugh, I fall back my head connecting with a lumpy pillow. I kick my shoes unceremoniously off and onto the floor. Be alright Whisper.
