Chapter 5 - Fights and Flights
Vanáezae ran through the woods, her padded feet muffling the sounds of her large paws hitting the forest floor. Senses on high alert of the impending danger that awaited her. She followed the smell of the dwarves, which was very easy to track, until Vanáezae made it to the clearing. There the trolls were, along with the dwarves.
Bilbo was trying to persuade the trolls that the dwarves had parasites. Taking the troll's distraction, Vanáezae slowly crept around them, onto the outcropping of rock that lay behind the trolls. She kept low to the ground, her white fur contrasting with her darkened surroundings. Despite her fur color, the only thing to be seen were her vibrant green eyes, almost glowing in the dark.
Suddenly, a troll walked over to Bombur, picked him up, and dangled the dwarf over his mouth. "Nice and crunchy," The troll said.
"N-not that one! He-he's infected!" Bilbo stuttered, catching everyone's attention.
"You what?" Asked the troll, who was turning the spit.
"Yeah he's got worms in his...tubes!" Bilbo answered quickly.
"Ugh!" The troll said in disgust, dropping Bombur onto Kili and some of the dwarves.
A loud snarl came from Vanáezae. She had no idea why, but she shook hear head and looked at the clearing. Everyone in the clearing had went quiet. All heads turning this way and that, looking for the source of the snarl. Once again taking the distraction as an opportunity, Vanáezae lept from the rock, landing in front of the dwarves and startling poor Bilbo. She took a protective stance and threw her mind into the minds surrounding her.
"What are you doing in the territory of the Great Alpha She-Wolf?" She snarled. The dwarves stared at Vanáezae in shock. "Answer me!" She yelled, making some of the dwarves flinch.
"Ooh look here. This mutt can speak!" The troll turning the spit grumbled.
"Just an appetizer. Kill the wolf," another said.
Vanáezae snarled and leapt leapt from her stance, landing on a troll. She slashed her paws this way and that, getting in as much damage as she could, before leaping onto the next troll. But Vanáezae didn't see the third one come right at her.
He grabbed Vanáezae by the scruff of her neck and flung her at the nearest tree. The tree cracked under the weight and under the force of the throw. She landed on the ground hard, and looked towards the sky. It was almost dawn, the dwarves would make it.
She slowly got up and looked at the dwarves. Vanáezae looked at Kili, his brown eyes meeting her green ones. Turning around, she ran back to camp. The pain in her side was really hurting.
When Vanáezae shifted back, she immediately pulled up her shirt and looked at her side. I think I might have a cracked rib, she thought. Vanáezae sighed and pulled her shirt down. Vanáezae then heard the sound of rushing horse hooves, and the neigh of a horse. Gandalf and Vanadessë came rushing up to her.
"Where are they?" Gandalf asked.
"That way," Vanáezae answered, wincing as she pointed in the direction of the dwarves.
Gandalf hurriedly ran past her followed by Vanadessë, and then Vanáezae. Although she was slower, Vanáezae got there just in time to see Thorin say, "And where did you go, if I may ask?"
"To look ahead," Gandalf simply said.
"What brought you back?"
"Looking behind, and my friend Vanadessë here."
Thorin nodded in Vanadessë's direction, which she returned, and Thorin looked to Vanáezae. "Where did you go?"
Vanáezae rolled her eyes, "I made Vanadessë look for Gandalf, whilst I had an old friend look after you."
Thorin looked at Vanáezae as if she'd gone mad. But what does a freak know about being mad? Absolutely nothing.
"You're the one who sent the wolf?" Thorin asked, gaining the attention of the group.
"I did. She is a good friend of mine and we have known each other since we were little," Vanáezae said, picking up Ori's slingshot and handing it to him.
It was an obvious lie to those who knew who she really was, namely Gandalf. Thorin looked at her, silently questioning Vanáezae. Her only response was to just shrug him off and go over to Vanadessë.
"Can I speak with you?" Vanáezae asked.
"Uh sure. Yeah I guess," She answered, slightly unsure.
Vanáezae walked away from earshot of the group, Vanadessë following close behind. Vanáezae finally stopped and turned around to face her friend.
"Vanadessë," Vanáezae began.
"Vanáezae," her friend repeated.
"Do you - um," she hesitated. "Do you remember how we used to joke about shapeshifting and how it would be awesome if we could do that?"
Let me give you some background. Vanáezae and Vanadessë had known each other since they were little. But, Vanáezae moved away many years ago and the two had forgotten about one another. When they were little they used to have movie marathons and joke around with their imaginations running wild. Then when Vanáezae moved she could only guess why she forgot her best friend. But when Vanadessë introduced herself Vanáezae immediately remembered their time spent together. Obviously her friend did as well.
"Yeah, why?''
Vanáezae hesitated once again. This was one of her best friends. She could trust her. Right? Before thinking on it too much more she just blabbered it out.
"I'm a shapeshifter," she said.
Vanadessë just stared at Vanáezae, her face emotionless. Then, she ran up and hugged her saying, "I knew I wasn't the only one!"
Vanáezae was so startled by the movement she stumbled back a little. But then she returned her friend's hug. Then she began the questioning.
"Vanadessë, what did you mean when you said, 'I knew I wasn't the only one'?"
Vanadessë let go of Vanáezae and sighed. The next thing Vanáezae knew, her friend transformed into a small, white, blue eyed house cat. Vanáezae lowered herself and picked up her, now a cat, friend.
"This is so cool!" She practically yelled.
A short time passed when the two remembered about Thorin and the rest of the company. Vanáezae slowly put her friend back on the ground before Vanadessë changed back.
Imagine their surprise when two elves suddenly dropped over the troll hoard. The two women hadn't been paying attention so when the found the edge of the roof, they went straight off. Vanáezae landed on her feet with the grace of a real elf, only to find Vanadessë landing on her back with an 'oof!'. The company of dwarves stared at the two as Vanáezae helped her friend up.
"Something coming!" Thorin shouted, gaining everyone's attention.
Vanáezae quickly grabbed her sword and passed to to Vanadessë. Her friend took it with little hesitancy. Vanáezae pulled her bow from her shoulder, quickly notching an arrow. They ran after the group and took their positions.
"Thieves! Fire! Murder!" A voice yelled, as a figure bursted through the bushes.
Gandalf gave a relieved sigh. "Radagast! Radagast the Brown. Ah. What on earth are you doing here?"
"I was looking for you, Gandalf. Something’s wrong. Something’s terribly wrong."
"Yes?" Gandalf inquired.
Radagast opened his mouth to speak, but shut it. He opened his mouth again, but closed it again. He had forgotten what he was going to say. It was quite comical to say the least.
"Oh, just give me a minute. Um, oh, I had a thought, and now I’ve lost it. It was, it was right there, on the tip of my tongue," he started pointed towards his mouth. "...Oh, it's not a thought at all. It's a silly old-" Gandalf reached into his mouth and pulled out a bug."-stick insect."
Everyone had bewildered faces at seeing this. Vanadessë walked up to Bilbo and said, "That's Radagast the Brown."
Bilbo jumped. "Oh-oh. Yes, Gandalf said."
"I'm no warg Bilbo, no need to worry," Vanadessë said.
Vanáezae came up behind her. "No but you might be as mean as one when angry," She said.
Vanadessë playfully punched her in the arm saying, "Uh, rude!"
Vanáezae only laughed and walked over towards Kili, while Vanadessë unconsciously moved by Thorin. Gandalf and Radagast went to speak alone. After a little while, a howl sounded not too far away.
"Is that a wolf? Are there-are there wolves out there?" Bilbo asked, worriedly.
"Wolf? No that was not a wolf," Bofur said.
A twig snapped behind her, next thing Vanáezae knew she was under a warg. It snapped at her but narrowly missed her head.
"Kili!" Vanáezae screamed.
Kili shot an arrow at it, piercing the warg's eye. Thorin finished him off with his new sword, Orcrist, when another warg went to him. Vanadessë had grabbed Vanáezae's bow that had been thrown to the ground, notched an arrow, and shot one. Dwalin killed the warg with his very large hammer.
"Warg scouts! Which means an orc pack is not far behind!" Thorin said, hauling Vanáezae to her feet.
"Orc pack?" Bilbo barked?
Gandalf walked over to Thorin, "Who did you tell of your quest, beyond your kin?" He asked.
"No one," Thorin said.
"Who did you tell?!" Gandalf asked again.
"No one I swear!" More howls could be heard. "What in Durin's name is going on?" Thorin asked.
"You're being hunted," Gandalf and Vanadessë said at the same time. Gandalf looked at her curiously.
"We have to get out of here," Dwalin said.
"No really? I thought we would just stand here, and wait for the wargs to kill us!" Vanáezae sarcastically yelled.
Dwalin glared at her while some of the dwarves close to the woman gave weary looks.
"Vanáezae, calm down," Kili said, grabbing her arm.
Ori ran over to the responding to Dwalin, "We can't! We have no ponies!"
"I'll draw them off," Radagast offered.
Gandalf turned to him, "These are Gundabad wargs, they will outrun you," he said, walking towards the brown wizard.
"These are Rhosgobel rabbits," Radagast pointed the large rabbits behind him. "I'd like to see them try," He said, with a crazed look in his eye. Radagast took off on his sled and yelled, "Come and get me! Ha ha!"
The group ran in the opposite direction of the obviously crazy wizard, following the white rocks. Then Radagast the appeared in front of them, an orc pack trailing behind him. They had to come to a complete stop real quick but Ori kept running.
"Ori, no!" Thorin shouted, pulling him back. "Come back!"
As soon as we were in the clear, Gandalf told them to come on and to keep up.
"Where are you leading us?" Thorin asked.
Gandalf only looked at him and continued to run, Thorin following after him. The more they ran the more tired everyone became. Soon, everyone was hiding behind a white rock, and a warg and it's rider were on the rock. The warg, sniffing around, caught the smell of Vanáezae's wolf form. It growled lowly.
Thorin nodded to Kili who notched an arrow in his bow. He ran out from the cover of the rock and shot the arrow, immbedding it in the wargs shoulder. Kili shot another and the warg fell from the rock, screaming. The orc got out from under the warg and ran at the group, only to be beheaded by Vanadessë, wielding Vanáezae's sword. The warg by now had created so much sound that the orc pack undoubtedly heard everything. The orc pack was instantly chasing after them.
The company continued to run until everyone was surrounded by the orc pack. Some of the orcs and wargs backed up, smelling Vanáezae's dragon scent. Kili and Vanáezae shot orcs and wargs, the others taking defensive strategies. Vanadessë held Vanáezae's sword by her side, not sure of what to do.
"Where is Gandalf?" A dwarf asked.
"He's abandoned us!" Dwalin replied.
Kili and Vanáezae shot more orcs and wargs until Gandalf yelled, "This way you fools!".
Everyone turned around and ran for the crack that Gandalf went through. Soon it was only Kili, Thorin, and Vanáezae.
"Kili! Vanáezae!" Thorin yelled.
Kili turned around and started running towards Thorin, Vanáezae stayed behind to make sure Kili made it. As she was closer to the white rock than he was.
"Vanáezae!" Thorin yelled again.
Vanáezae growled in frustration. Turning around she ran towards Thorin. She jumped in the hole that was hidden just as an elf horn sounded. Thorin came in just after Vanáezae. This will be great. I forgot about these elves, she thought.
