Chapter 10 - Azog and Cliffs

Immediately, everyone booked it. Vanáezae was practically flying over the rocks. No way was she going to be the next chew toy for a warg. Out of the corner of her eye she could see the wargs beginning to catch up. And warg jumped from a ledge and in front of Bilbo, he stopped dead. The warg charged at Bilbo who pulled out his sword. It was too late for the warg to stop as it impaled itself in the small sword. Next to him Nori swung his behind him and hit a warg that was chasing him.

A warg suddenly jumped on Vanáezae, making her fall onto her back. It snarled, showing its teeth. She could smell its ransid breath from where she was. Just as it was about to snack on her, it howled in pain as a sword went into its side. Vanáezae rolled out from under it and looked at Kili, who had saved her. Kili helped her up and smiled slightly. She gave him a small smile in return. They kept on running till they ran into a cliff. Not good!

"Up into the trees!" Gandalf commanded. "All of you, climb! Bilbo, climb!"

Bifur chucked a rock at an oncoming warg. It stumbled and tripped, skidding on the ground. Vanáezae however, was already climbing a tree. Just above her was Gandalf who reached the top. The wargs continued to run and they soon caught up with the company, attacked the trees, trying to get them.

Gandalf used his staff to reach a moth sitting on a branch. He began wispering to it and then he let it go. It was the moth that was going to bring the eagles. The wargs suddenly stopped barking and snarling. A white orc and a white warg were walking towards them. They stopped on a small ledge.

"Azog," Thorin breathed.

It was obvious he couldn't believe what he was seeing. Azog smiled cruelly.

"Nuzdigid? Nuzdi gast," Azog said in black speech. "Ganzilig-i unarug obod nauzdanish. Torin undag Train-ob."

"It cannot be," Thorin whispered.

Everyone looked to Thorin in worry, hoping he wouldn't do anything stupid.

"Kod. Worori-da!" Azog yelled.

All wargs charged forward, each wanting someone from the company as a snack. They jumped at the trees taking off branches as they did. One jumped near Vanáezae and she kicked it in the face.

"Sho gad adol," Azog said.

One by one the trees began falling down due to the weight of the wargs. One by one, the dwarves kept jumping from tree to tree until they were all on the last tree, Vanáezae's tree, which was next to the cliff.

"You okay?" Vanáezae called to Vanadessë, who ended up below her.

Vanadessë nodded in responce. Gandalf looked around and pulled a pinecone from the tree. He set it on fire and threw it down to the wargs below. He lit two more and tossed them down. Some dwarves shared theirs and lit another's pine cone before throwing them at the wargs below. One was struck in the face and another had to run away, it's coat catching on fire. The rest of the pack retreated away from the fire. It was going good until the tree began to tip. Vanáezae immediately grabbed the trunk beside her, stabling herself. Everyone was yelling in fright and minding their own business trying to save their own skins so they didn't see Vanadessë slip and fall.

"Vanadessë!" Vanáezae screamed, reaching out. "No!"

"Vanadessë!" Thorin yelled.

He too reached out, but didn't catch her. She fell into the darkness that was now below them. Vanáezae's eyes began to water. Her friend was gone, just like that.

Bofur too slipped and grabbed Dori's feet. Vanáezae grabbed Kili's hand and helped him to a branch. Thorin looked up from the cliff and to Azog, anger in his eyes.

"Mister Gandalf!" Dori called.

He fell from his branch. Gandalf stuck out his staff for them to hold onto. Thorin stood on the trunk of the tree, his sword out of its sheath. He began to run forward as Vanáezae climbed onto the tree. She knew what she had to do. She looked to Gandalf and he nodded.

Vanáezae took a deep breath and jumped from the tree. Wind whipped past her as she began to transform. Her bones snapped and rearranged themselves. Blue scales covered her body and two feathered wings sprouted from my back. Her green eyes changed blue and to that of a lizards. Finally, she spread her wings and shot back upwards.

As she neared the cliff Vanáezae could see many dwarves missing from the tree. She flew up past Gandalf and above the wargs. Vanáezae roared making everyone look to me. Taking in the situation she noticed Bilbo standing in front of Thorin and a few dwarves were fighting wargs. She wasn't a very big dragon, about thirteen feet tall. Maybe twice the size of Gandalf. But she was big enough to carry a few wargs off a cliff. That's just what she did.

Swooping down Vanáezae's grabbed a warg in her talons and threw it off the cliff. All evil creatures tried to steer clear. Even the dwarves were wary of her. One orc however cut Vanáezae on her back leg, making her stumble. She turned and slashed her talons at it. Then eagle cawing could be heard.

All eyes were drawn to the giant eagles coming towards us. Some of them grabbed the dwarves and others the wargs. Vanáezae's eyes just stayed on the blue and green phoenix flying with them. She roared in delight. Vanadessë was alive! She squawked back at Vanáezae. The eagles began carrying the dwarves away. Vanáezae began to follow them but Vanadessë stayed to grab the oakenshield Thorin dropped. Azog yelled out an anger as his enemy flew away.

Dawn had come and still they flew. Gandalf lead them, followed by the dwarves and Bilbo, then Vanáezae and Vanadessë. Vanadessë had long since retired to riding on Vanáezae's back, clutching Thorin's shield in worry. Every few minutes or so someone from the company would cast Vanáezae wary looks, but Kili? He hasn't even so much as glanced at her since last night. Vanáezae sighed and hung her head. Vanadessë patted her friend's shoulder, trying to comfort her.

"It'll be okay," she said.

"I hope so," Vanáezae agreed, letting her mind into her friend's.

"Thorin!" Fili screamed, making Vanáezae's and Vanadessë's heads snap up.

Their eyes scanned the eagles till they landed on his limp body, held in the eagles claws. Vanadessë whimpered slightly, clutching Thorin's shield even tighter as tears brimmed her eyes. Vanáezae sent her a worried glance. Then a small rock, oddly shaped like a bear, came into veiw. The eagles circled around it and Thorin was set onto the ground, his eagle flying away. Vanáezae landed and folded her wings, letting Vanadessë off her back but then continued to circle around the bear rock. Next came Gandalf and the Company, followed by Bilbo.

"Thorin," Gandalf spoke, walking towards his lying figure. "Thorin."

As soon as all of the company was upon the rock Vanáezae landed once again. This time she sat at the edge. The dwarves all ignored her as they gathered around their king. Gandalf placed his hand above Thorin's face, muttering an ancient language. Thorin's eyes fluttered open as everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

"The halfling," Thorin whispered.

"It's all right. Bilbo is here, he's quite safe," Gandalf replied.

Vanáezae nudged her little friend with her snout, telling him to go forward. Bilbo took the hint and stepped forward a little. Thorin was helped up by his companions but he brushed them off.

"You," Thorin growled. "What were you doing? You nearly got yourself killed!"

"Thorin," Vanadessë warned. He ignored her.

"Did I not say that you would be a burden? That you would not survive in the wild? That you had no place amongst us?" Thorin walked closer to Bilbo. "I have never been so wrong, in all my life."

Thorin surprised everyone and hugged Bilbo, who looked much like a startled rabbit. Everyone cheered, well, except for Vanáezae since she was a dragon. The two pulled back from the hug.

"I'm sorry I had doubted you," Thorin apologized.

"No I would have doubted me too," Bilbo said. "I'm not a hero, or a warrior. Not even a burglar."

All chuckled at him. At least Vanáezae could do that. She smiled fondly at the small person. The eagles then began to fly off, Southeast by the looks of it. Back home.

"Now," Thorin faced Gandalf, "about your extra person Gandalf."

"I brought her for a reason Thorin. It would be unwise as to make her leave," Gandalf said.

"And why would that be Gandalf?"

"I think it is obvious reasons."

"She is a dragon! Do you not think that she may be tempted by my treasure?"

Vanáezae immediately forced her mind into everyone else's, "Excuse me? Gandalf chose me for this quest and the Prophecy states that I would go. I don't even care for gold! It corrupts even the best of people."

Vanadessë hardened her gaze at Vanáezae. It was obvious she knew Vanáezae was talking about Thorin, and she didn't like it.

Thorin scoffed, "Prophecies. Nothing more than a poem written on paper."

"That is enough Thorin," Gandalf spoke, tired. "If you make her go then you'll loose two valuable members of your company. One of which you don't want to make angry."

"I don't think he's talking about himself Thorin," Vanadessë added.

Thorin glared at Gandalf and stalked off. But could only go so far as the edge of the Carrok across from Vanáezae.
