Chapter IV
"Strange," Dustin commented as we walked through the building.
"What?" I asked, biting into an apple.
"They didn't ask for your address as verification," he said, turning to look at me as he picked up a carrot from a nearby table.
"That's cuz I'm a girl, silly," I said, elbowing him. "'sides, they know me."
"How?" Jake asked.
"How far are our bunks?" I asked Luke, who was currently puzzling out a map.
"A couple minutes, not far," he said.
"Okay." I tossed the stem of my apple in a nearby burn can.
Dustin led me into the Section 5 Group C bunks, walking through until he found two mattresses next to each other and he sat down on one. I sat down on the other and commanded Mae to sit.
"So," I said, biting my sandwich. "Why are you in the army?"
Dustin shrugged, stirring the soup in front of him. "You know how it is. Twice as many boys in our population as girls, I'm in the half that gets sent off. The real question is why you are in the army?"
"No husband. I only have sisters, and my parents don't think they can have a boy. So since I don't really want a husband, and am not insightful enough to realize it would make my life. A lot easier, I'm the one to represent our family."
Dustin nodded.
"Alright, urchins, mess is over. Grub on the cart," snapped an obscenely ugly old man with lots of scars. "Now!"
