ii. for future reference, and safety
chapter two
[ for future reference, and safety ]
WITH THE LOSERS CLUB NEWLY FOUND MEMBER, they continued on with their conversation, feeling a new energy of excitement radiating through each member of the group. "so do you all have any plans for summer?" wilbur asked, adjusting the straps of his bag, the weight of all of his books and stationary weighing him down, almost making him fall over.
"not yet, we were just talking about stan's bar mitzvah" eddie explained. will knew that stanley was jewish, i mean most people knew it too, but he couldn't say he knew anything about the culture, although he did find it quite interesting.
"ed's s-s-says that they slice the t-tip of his d-d-dick off" bill stated to the group, while richie chimed in "yeah, i think the rabbi's gonna pull down his pants, turn to the crowd and say 'where's the beef?'" he snickered while will's eyes widened at this new information,
"do they?" he whispered to stan, eyes full of concern. stanley, flustered and clearly embarrassed by his friends untrue assumptions sighs and goes on to explain "no, not at all. at the bar mitzvah i read from the torah, make a speech, and then suddenly i become a man."
"hm, i can think of funner ways to become a man" richie replies with an 'eat shit' grin while nudging stan, stan merely rolling his eyes at his childishness.
" 'more fun' you mean" he corrected.
the group had fallen into an eerie silence as they passed the infamous henry bowers and his sickly scary goons. the thought and sight of them made wilbur's stomach churn as he knew they could easily tower over the scrawny boy, even the slightest touch from one of them could leave colourful markings on wilburs soft and delicate body. the boys sped up their pace of walking, trying not to make it too obvious that they were basically fleeing from the gang.
"think they'll sign my yearbook?" richie stated to the group after they were out of earshot, attempting to lighten after their very brief encounter with the bullies. " 'dear richie, sorry for taking a hot steamy dump in your backpack last month, have a good summer!"
as they entered the stairwell the boys were greeted with the stench of bubblegum as the 'holy mythic bitch' greta keene storms her way past them, harshly bumping into stanley, and as much as wilbur wished he could stand up to her, no words seemed to form. he was dragged back to the group by stanley, sending him a reassuring smile, letting the boy know he was okay.
"BEST FEELING EVER", stanley declares while removing all the contents that were piling up in his bag, the other boys following in suit, feeling refreshed by the summer breeze and light weighted bags on their shoulders.
richie, pushing up the glasses that were placed on the bridge of his nose, being the smartass he is, commented "yeah? try tickling your pickle for the first time", all the boys disregarded the comment, not wanting to encourage the boys antics any further, although wilbur seemed to voice everyone's minds, "you are disgusting." richie held his arms up in defence after putting on his now empty backpack.
"so what do you guys want to do tomorrow?" eddie asked, wanting to plan ahead.
"start my training" richie answered, shrugging his shoulders,
"wh-what training?" eddie asked, unknowingly regretting asking the question in the first place,
"street fighter" richie replies, as if the answer was obvious.
"is that how you want to spend your summer? inside of an arcade?" eddie goes on, just as confused as before. wilbur didn't mind the arcade, sure he wasn't the best at many of the games, but he did find them quite fun.
"well it beats spending it inside of your mother! ohhhh" richie shouts, turning to stan and raising his arm to give him a high five, while wilbur just continues watching in amusement, finding richie and eddie's bickering very entertaining.
stanley grabs onto richie's wrist lowering his arm, "what if we go to the quarry?" he suggested, looking around to see the others nod in agreement, until bill spoke up and said "g-g-guy's we have the b-barrens" as he looked among them, just as stanley did before.
"right" stanley spoke, keeping his answer short, as the other boys felt guilty, forgetting about their promise to bill, that they would help search for georgie. and even though wilbur wasn't particularly sure on what was going on, he nodded in agreement, wanting to help his new friend in any way he can.
eddie had averted his gaze back to the entrance of the school, there he saw a women, watching as the children exited the school like they did before, standing their with hope. "betty ripsom's mom", the boys follow his gaze over to the women, and wilbur couldn't help but frown at the sight. he had noticed this was a usual occurrence, the women was desperate, but he couldn't imagine what it would feel like to have lost a child.
"does she expect to see her coming out of the school?" stanley asks. "i don't know, i mean it's not like betty's been hiding in home ec all week" eddie shrugs, will glances back to the women again, only this time she was speaking to derry's police officers. "do you think they'll find her?" wilbur questions, not to anyone particularly, just letting the question float through their minds.
"sure! in a ditch all decomposed covered in worms and maggots, smelling worse then eddie's mom's underwear" richie explains, gesturing over to eddie, watching the smaller boys face wrinkle in disgust,
"shut up! that's fucking disgusting" eddie trailed off in an attempt to defended himself.
"she's not d-dead, she's m-m-missing" bill stated, to richie, who soon understood that his motormouth may have overstepped his limit, so he nodded understandingly "sorry bill, she's missing" he corrected himself.
the boys started moving away, richie called out "you know, the barrens aren't so bad, i mean, who doesn't love splashing around in shitty water!" and as soon as those words left the boys mouth, he was pulled back by his bag, creating a domino effect as stanley, wilbur and richie all toppled over. the culprit of the fall, made his way over to them.
"looks like the fairy has found his flock" patrick sneers in wilbur's face, making the redhead squirm under his stare. he soon turns to slanley, snatching the kippah that was atop of his head. "nice frisbee, flamer" he taunted as stanley tried his best to retrieve it, although it was soon thrown onto a moving school bus that drove by them. "asshole" wilbur muttered under his breath, while exhaling a sigh of relief as he saw the bullies walk away. he stood up, offering both richie and stanley a hand each, pulling them back up to their feet.
"you s-s-suck bowers!" bill called out, making wilbur's eyes shoot open and straight over to bill, shocked to have ever heard those words come from anyone, let alone 'stuttering bill' of all people. and even if he did stutter, it was a dumb, but heroic move.
this caused henry to turn around, with a sickly sadistic smile on his face "you s-s-say s-s-somthing b-b-billy?" he cackled, taunting the boy, who stayed unphased. "you got a free ride this year because of your little brother, free rides over denbrough" although he stopped abruptly in front of bill, starring over and above the smaller boy's heads. wilbur turned back, following his gaze as his eyes fell upon the police officers he had seen before, the chief specifically watching henry with squinted eyes. seeing henry look so vulnerable, so meek, made wilbur smirk in satisfaction.
henry put his focus back of the younger boys "this summer's gonna hurt for you, and your faggot friends" he threatens, words dripping with venom, and just before he leaves, he licks the base of his palm and smears it across bills face, turning to retreat back to belch's car, where the rest of the gang was awaiting him.
"wish he'd go missing" eddie responds while watching the car drive off into the distance,
"he's probably the one that's doing it" richie replies, and honestly, wilbur didn't doubt his claim.
"well i should probably get going, my mother is quite strict on curfew" wilbur states to the group, and just as he's about to walk away he hears bill call out,
"you will be j-joining us at the b-b-barrens, right?" bill asked, the other boys eyes turned to wilbur in anticipation, in hope that he would indeed be accompanying them tomorrow. wilburs face turns into a wide grin as he looks back to them, "of course!" his response made them all mirror the same grin wilbur had, "see you then lil red" richie called out, as he biked in the opposite direction, and as the group disbanded off into the directions of their homes, stanley stayed behind with wilbur...
"i can bike home with you if you want, you know for future reference... and safety"
