Daydreamers
Stephanie woke up to a burning feeling. She slowly opened her eyes and immediately shot up on her bed in fright at her surroundings.
Stephanie was in the middle of a fire. Her whole house was in flames and she sat right in the middle of it as if nothing was wrong. She quickly scrambled out of her bed when a bloodcurdling scream shook the walls. It was Sabrina and James.
"Mom! Dad!"
Stephanie ran towards her door, trying to twist the scorching, red hot handle but she was locked in. "Mom! Dad!" Stephanie screamed again but instead of receiving a reply from her parents, two more screams rang out. Will and Isaac.
"Will! Isaac!" Stephanie screamed, wind blowing around her until it knocked her down, just before she could hit the ground, Isaac caught her from behind, slowly bringing her to the ground.
Isaac pulled Stephanie in between his legs, letting Stephanie lean into his back. Will ran in front of her, trying to knock her out of her nightmare.
Stephanie couldn't hear a word Will was saying, the house was no longer on fire and there were no more screams but that didn't stop small flames escaping her fingertips in fear.
Isaac held her hands in his, letting her burn him so she didn't harm anybody else as he groaned, looking up at James and Sabrina. "Can we get some cold water or something? To cool her off."
James immediately ran towards the kitchen to get some cold water. "Her eyes are still purple." Sabrina said, kneeling down to sit next to Will in front of Stephanie. Isaac groaned as Stephanie continued to burn his hands unconsciously. "She just needs to cool off."
James came back into the bedroom, holding a glass of cold water. Sabrina quickly took the glass from him. "Okay. Okay. Um... What do I do?!" Sabrina mumbled, slightly panicked at the sight of her daughter still not fully out of her daydream. Will looked back and forth between his mom and Stephanie before grabbing the glass out of his moms hand and throwing the water onto Stephanie.
Stephanie gasped for air, her eyes going back to brown and the fire stopping around her fingers. Isaac sighed, letting go of Stephanie's hands to wipe his face. "Could've warned me." Will winced slightly at Isaac's words. "Sorry."
Sabrina sighed. "Let's get you up, Sweetheart." Sabrina mumbled and Isaac nodded, helping Stephanie up into the bed. Sabrina leaned forward on the bed to brush hair out of Stephanie's face as she tried to calm down. "Are you okay?"
Stephanie nodded her head as she pulled the blankets all the way up to her chin. Sabrina sighed, kissing the top of Stephanie's head and walking out of the room. James copied his wife's actions, kissing the top of Stephanie's head and walking out of the room. Will playfully squinted at his sister, shaking his hand through her hair to mess it up, making Stephanie laugh with a groan.
Will took in a deep breath, watching his sister. "If something happens, I'm right across from you." Stephanie smiled, nodding her head. "I know." Will nodded, a playful smile on his face as he walked out of the room. "Love you, jerk." He called out as he walked out of the room.
"Love you too, you douche." Stephanie called out after him, a small laugh escaping during her words. She slowly turned to Isaac who stood by the bed, his hands in his flannel pajama pockets as he looked at the ground. Stephanie groaned, moving the blanket to make room for him. "Are you coming in or not?"
Isaac smiled, climbing into the bed as Stephanie opened her arms out for him to go into. Isaac quickly kissed her lips before kissing her temple. He moved Stephanie around so her back was touching his chest as he wrapped his arms around her waist, stuffing his head in the crook of her neck as their legs tangled together and Stephanie hugged his arms.
"Are you sure you're okay?" Isaac asked quietly, most of his voice muffled in Stephanie's chest. Stephanie slowly nodded, leaning back into Isaac. "Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine." She mumbled as she closed her eyes to fall back asleep. But every time she closed her eyes, she could still hear fire crackling around her.
...
"Well you don't look alright, Scott." Will heard Stiles say as he ran towards him and Scott at school. The McCall boy immediately shook his head. "I'm okay."
Stiles shook his head. "No, you're not. It's happening to you too." Will, finally catching up to the boys, put his hands on Stiles' shoulder as he tried to catch his breath, looking back and forth between the two boys. "You're seeing things, aren't you?" Stiles' eyes went wide, turning to Will. "How'd you know?"
"Because it's happening to all four of you." Isaac said, walking over with a freaked out Stephanie wrapped in his arms. Lydia and Allison walked over to the group as well, Allison looking just as terrified as Stephanie.
...
"Well, well, look who's no longer the crazy one." Lydia sang happily as they walked through the halls of the school. "We're not crazy." Stephanie groaned, squeezing Isaac's hand. Lydia hummed, turning around to face her and the rest of the group. "Hallucinating? Sleep paralysis? Yeah, you guys are fine."
"If I remember correctly, you were drugging everyone at your birthday." Stephanie muttered, walking towards Lydia. The strawberry blonde hummed, linking arms with Stephanie. "But at least you still have your snarky remarks."
"We did die and come back to life." Scott said and Stiles nodded, looking around the group. "That's gotta have some side effects, right?"
The sound of the school bell ringing stopped everyone from answering Stiles' question. Will sighed from beside him, clasping his hand on the Stilinksi boys shoulder as he looked at the rest of the group. "We keep an eye each other. Okay?"
"And Lydia, stop enjoying this so much." Stiles called out to Lydia who still had her arms linked with Stephanie's, dragging her to class as Isaac scurried after them since the three had the same class.
Will swiveled on the balls of his feet, turning into the class door they were closest to for History. A few seconds after he took his seat, he heard someone sit down behind him and suddenly felt two hands grasp his shoulders, shaking him slightly. Will turned around to see who it was and smiled at Stiles behind him.
"Good morning, everyone. My name is Mr. Yukimura. I'll be taking over for your previous history teacher. My family and I moved here three weeks ago. I'm sure, by now, you all know my daughter, Kira. Or you might not since she's never actually mentioned anyone from school. Or brought a friend home for that matter." The new teacher said.
A sigh and a small thud made everyone slowly turn to the back of the class where a girl sat with her head on her hands. She slowly lifted her head and smiled at the class. Will chuckled at the girls awkwardness, turning back to the front as he puckered his lips to rest his pencil between his top lip and his nose.
Will leaned back, facing his head up, the top of his head on Stiles' desk. Stiles looked down at Will and immediately felt himself smile at how determined the Saticoy boy looked trying to keep the pencil balanced.
Will, feeling eyes on him, looked up at Stiles. He felt a small flutter in his chest at Stiles' smile, making him distracted on keeping the pencil balanced. "Aw, shit." Will muttered, sitting up and grabbing his pencil off the floor, turning back to pay attention to the class.
...
Later in the day, Stephanie sat in Home EC, watching as Coach yelled at Greenberg. She looked around the room and her eyes fell on Will in the seat beside her, his eyes watching he back of Stiles' head. Stephanie sighed, ripping off a piece of paper in her notebook, crumbling it up and throwing it at him. Will jumped slightly at the paper hitting his nose before turning to Stephanie.
"Staring off at him isn't gonna help, you know." Stephanie whispered, making Will roll his eyes. "I was not staring." Stephanie chuckled. "Really? I think you got a little drool.." Stephanie said, playfully wiping the corner of her mouth, making Will scoff, throwing the piece of paper back at her.
"Stilinski!" Coach screamed, making Stephanie and Will jump, stopping their bickering to look ahead. Coach, not watching Stiles, kept talking. "Want to try the question on the board?" Coach asked but Stiles kept his head down. Will's brows furrowed at that, kicking Stiles' seat from behind but Stiles kept his eyes down, writing in his notebook. "Stilinski!" Coach screamed again, making Stiles' head shoot up. "Uh-huh?"
"I asked you a question." Coach said bluntly and Stiles quickly shook his head. "Uh... Sorry, coach. What was it?" Coach stared at Stiles for a few seconds. "It was "Stilinski, are you paying attention back there?""
Stiles' jaw dropped slightly as he quickly nodded. "Oh. Well, I am now."
"Stilinski, stop reminding me why I drink... Every night." Coach muttered before turning to the rest of the class. "Does anybody else want to try the question on the board?"
Stiles, feeling eyes on him, turned in his chair to face Scott next to him, Stephanie behind Scott and Will behind Stiles, next to Stephanie. Noticing the worried looks they gave him, Stiles quickly shook his head. "I'm okay. I just fell asleep for a second."
Will leaned forward, closer to Stiles' seat, shaking his head. "Stiles... You weren't asleep." He leaned over Stiles' shoulder, pointing at the paper Stiles had been writing on. 'WAKE UP' was written all over the page.
...
"Okay, so what happens to a person who has a near-death experience and comes out of it seeing things?" Scott asks at the lunch table he, Stiles, Will, Isaac, Steph, Allison and Lydia sat at; Will, Stiles and Scott sitting across from Isaac, Stephanie, Lydia and Allison.
"And is unable to tell what's real or not?" Stephanie added, making Allison nod from the other side of Lydia. "And is being haunted by demonic visions of dead relatives?"
"They're all locked up because they're insane." Isaac announced from the end of the table beside Stephanie, making her whack his arm. Stiles let out a sarcastic laugh, glaring at Isaac slightly. "Ha. Can you at least try to be helpful, please?"
"For half my childhood, I was locked in a freezer. So, being helpful is kind of a new thing for me." Isaac squinted and Stiles tiled his head. "Hey, dude, are you still milking that?" Will cursed under his breath at Stiles' words, kicking his shin from under the table as Isaac nodded. "Yeah, we are still milking that."
"Hi."
The group turned their heads to the cheery voice and watched the girl at the end of the table, most of them had never seen before talk. "Hi, sorry. I couldn't help overhearing what you guys were talking about. And I think I actually might know what you're talking about." The girl said and Stephanie furrowed her brows, turning to Will across the table from her. "Who is she?" Stephanie mouthed, Isaac turning to Will as well, wanting to know the answer.
"New girl." Will mouthed back, making the couple nod, turning back to Kira as she continued talking. "There's a Tibetan word for it. It's called "Bardo." It literally means "in-between state." The state between life and death."
Lydia hummed from beside Stephanie. "And what do they call you?"
The girl smiled at Lydia, nodding her head as she turned to look at the rest of the group. Just before she could open her mouth, Scott answered for her. "Kira." Stephanie's brows immediately shot up, turning to Scott who let out a small laugh as he shook his head at Stephanie's actions. "She's in our history class."
Lydia sighed, turning back to Kira. "So are you talking Bardo in Tibetan Buddhism or Indian?"
Kira immediately smiled, taking the spot next to Will. "Either, I guess. But all the stuff you guys were just saying? All that happens in Bardo. There are different progressive states where you can have hallucinations. Some you see, some you just hear. And you can by visited by peaceful and wrathful deities."
"Wrathful deities? And what are those?" Isaac asked, twirling his pencil in his fingers. "Like demons." Kira said, shrugging her shoulders, making Stephanie's jaw drop slightly. "D- Demons. Fun..."
"Why not?" Will mumbled and Allison quickly straightened up, facing Kira. "Hold on, if there are different progressive states, then what's the last one?"
Kira looked down for a moment before looking back up and nodding at Allison. "Death. You die." Stephanie's eyes widened at her words. leaning in towards Isaac as he quickly grabbed her hand. "You know... I'm surprised I didn't see that coming."
...
"It sounds like your subconscious is trying to communicate with you." Deaton said as he lead Stiles, Scott, Will, Stephanie and Isaac into the clinic after Stiles' weird daydream. "Well, how do I tell my subconscious to use a language that I actually know?" Stiles asked and Deaton squinted, as if to think of an answer before turning to Stiles. "Do you remember what the sign language looked like? The placement and movement of the hands?"
"You know sign language?" Isaac asked and Deaton turned to him, shrugging. "I know a little. Let me give it a shot."
"Okay, the first one was like this. Then..." Stiles muttered, holding up his index finger as his other one circled around it. "That's when." Deaton said, making Stiles nod. "Then there was this, twice." Stiles said as he opened his hands, making Deaton squint. "That's door." "And this in between it." Stiles said, placing his thumb under his chin and bringing it down. "That's it?" Deaton asked, making Stiles nod.
"When is a door not a door." Deaton said, making the group scrunch their faces. "When is a door not a door?" Will asked and Deaton nodded. "When it's ajar." Stiles' jaw dropped slightly, squinting as he shook his head. "You're kidding me. A riddle? My subconscious wants to tell me a riddle?"
Deaton shook his head. "Not necessarily. When the three of you went under the water, When you crossed from unconsciousness to a kind of super-consciousness... You essentially opened a door in your minds."
"So what does that mean? The door's still open?" Stephanie asked, making the man turn to her. "Ajar." Stephanie's eyes squinted, still slightly confused. "A door into our minds?"
Deaton nodded, turning back to Stiles and Scott. "I did tell you it was risky." Scott shook his head at his words. "What do we do about it?" Deaton shrugged at his words. "Well, that's difficult to answer."
Will immediately shook his head as Stiles pointed at Deaton. "Oh, no, wait a second, I know that look. That's the 'we know exactly what's wrong with you, but we have no idea how to fix it' look." Stiles said and Will instantly nodded. "You're very easy to read."
Deaton chuckled, shaking his head slightly. "One thing I do know is that having an opening like that into your mind, it's not good. You each need to close that door And you need to do it as soon as possible."
...
As they walked out of the clinic, Stephanie elbowed Will's shoulder, making him stumble forward into Stiles. Stiles quickly grabbed Will's chest and back, stopping him from falling and once Will was composed, Stiles chuckled, wrapping an arm around his shoulders.
Stephanie let out a triumphant laugh, swinging her and Isaac's hands as their eyes fell on the Sheriff's car parked outside. Stiles' brows furrowed, watching his dad in confusion. "Dad, what are you doing here?" The man sighed, walking towards the five teens. "I'm here because I could use some help. Actually... Your help." He said, looking at Scott and Isaac.
"Why us?" Isaac asked. "Because eight years ago, almost an entire family died in a car accident. One of the bodies, a young girl named Malia, was never found. There's enough evidence to have me thinking that... That a werewolf could have caused the accident, And then dragged her body away." At his words, Stephanie and Will sent each other knowing looks. Sheriff Stilinski sighed, crossing his arms slightly. "If you could somehow get a lock on her scent if you could somehow help me find her body, it might provide the missing clue."
"But what if it was a werewolf?" Will asked slowly, making the man turn to him. "Well, there's somebody out there who murdered an entire family. Someone who still needs to be caught."
"You said her name was Malia?" Stephanie asked slowly. The Sheriff nodded and Stephanie turned to Will with slightly wide eyes. When her brother returned the look, they both turned back to the Sheriff. "Malia Tate?"
The Sheriff instantly straightened up at Will's words, squinting at him as Stiles, Isaac and Scott turned to the siblings with confused looks. "How did you know that?" The Sheriff asked and Stephanie pulled her lips into a line. "Our moms maiden name is Tate. She's Henry Tate's little sister."
"She's Malia's aunt." Will said and the Sheriffs eyes widened, making Stephanie sighed at the man. "And we're her cousins."
